This is the first book to present an overview of the exciting new cardiac imaging technique of tissue Doppler echocardiography (TDE). In order to understand the background of this technique, it is necessary to compare the physical properties of blood, which reflects ultrasound poorly but moves with high velocity (up to 150 cm/s) with those of the myocar dium, which reflects ultrasound strongly but moves with low velocity (less than 10 cm/s). In tissue Doppler imaging, existing Doppler technology has been modified to bypass the high-pass filter and enhance calculation of low velocities, thus enabling selective visualization of the myocardium rather than of the blood. Because the color Doppler tissue images are super imposed on the conventional two-dimensional ultrasound images, this technique is known as TDE. Following a brief introduction, the history of ultrasound and Doppler imaging is presented. It is now about 150 years since the death of Christian Doppler, who described the "Doppler" effect, and more than 100 years since Pierre Curie discovered the piezoelectric effects of crystals. TDE was developed by Nobuo Yamazaki and Yoshitaka Mine at the Medi cal Engineering Laboratory, Toshiba Corporation, Tochigi, Japan. My personal interest in cardiac Dopplerarose from longexperience in diagnos ing carotid artery disease using Doppler continuous wave ultrasound with fre quencey spectral analysis. The work of Dr. Liv Hatle of Trondheim, who was then using analogue tracings for cardiac Doppler, inspired me to try CW Doppler combined with spectral analysis and high-pass filtering techniques. The results with this system, without benefit of standard echocardiography were so pro ductive that a special instrument was produced by Carolina Medical Electronics for worldwide marketing. Our experience led to the development of an interna tional symposium and training program. These symposia gave birth to the Inter national Cardiac Doppler Society and Volume I of this book series. This second volume on Cardiac Doppler Diagnosis is an outgrowth of the successofVolume I and the excellent work of many clinical scientists. Doppler instrumentation continues to improve with integration ofboth contin uous wave and pulsed wave Doppler with echocardiography. Color directional Doppler imaging techniques led byourJapanese colleagues is finding acceptance as a rapid screening method to find special regions of interest where more quantitative continuous wave with its quantitative capabilities of Doppler can be brought to bear. Volume 15 follows the format of earlier volumes in the series. The contents give the next installment in the varied aspects of acoustical imaging research. On this occasion, some emphasis was placed on the rela tionship of l1nderwater acoustics to acoustical imaging and a volume of papers under the title "Underwater Acoustics Proceedings from the 12th ICA Symposium held in Halifax," will appear at roughly the same time as this volume. There is no duplication in these volumes but they are in terlinked, at least to the extent that papers from common conference sessions appear in one or another volume. An innovation is the review paper presented at the beginning of the volume "A History of Acoustical Imaging," by G Wade.
