To Halt Or Not To Halt? That Is The Question by Cristian S Calude Pdf
This is a book about the 'Halting Problem', arguably the most (in)famous computer-related problem: can an algorithm decide in finite time whether an arbitrary computer program eventually stops? This seems a dull, petty question: after all, you run the program and wait till it stops. However, what if the program does not stop in a reasonable time, a week, a year, or a decade? Can you infer that it will never stop? The answer is negative. Does this raise your interest? If not, consider these questions: Can mathematics be done by computers only? Can software testing be fully automated? Can you write an anti-virus program which never needs any updates? Can we make the Internet perfectly secure? Your guess is correct: the answer to each question is negative. The Halting Problem is 'hidden' in many subjects, from logic (is mathematics free of contradictions?), physics (is quantum randomness perfect?), to philosophy (do humans have free will, or do our brains generate our thoughts and decisions in a deterministic way?) and quantum computing (why we don't have a quantum Halting Problem?) — this book will visit each of them.Written in an informal and thought-provoking language, supported with suggestive illustrations and applications and almost free of arcane mathematics (formal arguments are relegated to particular parts dedicated to the mathematically-oriented reader), the book will stimulate the curiosity and participation of the reader interested in the consequences of the limits of computing and in various attempts to cope with them.
A computer is a machine designed for manipulating data according to a list of instructions known as a programme. Computers are versatile. In fact, they are universal information- processing machines. Due to technological advancement, modern electronic computers are exponentially more capable than those of preceding generations. Today, computers are at the centre of thousands upon thousands of other inventions. They are the heartbeats of the modern world. Computers are everywhere- from kitchens to concrete mixers, from planes to pockets. They listen. They speak. They act. Never in world history has one invention had such an influence on humanity age, there would be no global awareness. Today computers are being used in every walk of life and this book is useful to anyone who wishes to learn computers. The First chapter traces the history of computers. The rest of the book covers fundamental aspects such hardware, software and other applications associated with computers.

Cybercrime and Society by Majid Yar,Kevin F. Steinmetz Pdf
Extensively updated and expanded to reflect the evolving landscape of online crime, this fourth edition of Cybercrime and Society is a comprehensive and accessible introduction to this complex and fascinating topic. But just what are cybercrimes? And who are the cybercriminals? You will learn how the internet and communication technologies present new challenges to individual and collective safety, social order and stability, economic prosperity and political liberty. From hacktivism and digital disobedience to online harassment and sexual exploitation, Cybercrime and Society is the definitive book for undergraduate and postgraduate students studying modules in cybercrime and cybersecurity. The fourth edition covers new and contemporary issues such as AI and preventative approaches to counter cybercrimes and also includes two new chapters: • Online Falsehoods provides coverage of fake news, disinformation, and conspiracies, each of which have rapidly become a major online problem with significant consequences • Illegal Goods and Illicit Markets combines discussion of issues such as the trade in prohibited goods online and via crypto-markets with discussion of piracy and copyright crime In addition to the extensive updating and expansion of the topics covered in the 2019 edition, all kinds of new developments are introduced and assessed. New case studies and examples are presented, and the international scope and coverage of the book has been further expanded, with treatment of the Canadian and Australian contexts being given greater consideration. Majid Yar is Professor Emeritus of Criminology at Lancaster University. Kevin F. Steinmetz is a Professor of Criminology at Kansas State University.
The aim of the Applications of Advanced Computing Techniques Series is to publish accounts of particular computer application areas which provide good examples of advanced practice in the fields concerned. In some volumes, the techniques described will be advanced because of the particular computer technologies used. In other volumes the techniques will be advanced because they illustrate new ways of using computing in particular fields, or because they raise new social and ethical issues. All the volumes are designed to be readable both for practitioners working in the application area concerned (in this case lawyers) and for computer professionals interested in leading edge applications. Philip Leith meets all these objectives in this volume. The first four chapters provide a valuable introduction to computer concepts and methods of holding information, from the specific point of view of the practising lawyer or student. Whilst some of these issues may be familiar to computer practitioners it is only through a proper appreciation of the technology that the real benefits to the working lawyer become clear.
State of the Art in Applied Cryptography by Bart Preneel,Vincent Rijmen Pdf
The Department of Electrical Engineering-ESAT at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven regularly runs a course on the state of the art and evolution of computer security and industrial cryptography. The rst course took place in 1983, the second in 1989, and since then the course has been a biennial event. The course is intended for both researchers and practitioners from industry and government. It covers the basic principles as well as the most recent - velopments. Our own interests mean that the course emphasizes cryptography, but we also ensure that the most important topics in computer security are covered. We try to strike a good balance between basic theory and real-life - plications, between mathematical background and judicial aspects, and between recent technical developments and standardization issues. Perhaps the greatest strength of the course is the creation of an environment that enables dialogue between people from diverse professions and backgrounds. In 1993, we published the formal proceedings of the course in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science series (Volume 741). Since the el d of cryptography has advanced considerably during the interim period, there is a clear need to publish a new edition. Since 1993, several excellent textbooks and handbooks on cryptology have been published and the need for introductory-level papers has decreased. The growth of the main conferences in cryptology (Eurocrypt, Crypto, and Asiacrypt) shows that interest in the eld is increasing.
