Canadian Financial Institutions and Their Adoption of New Technologies by Ernst & Young,Task Force on the Future of the Canadian Financial Services Sector Pdf

The purpose of this report is to assist in assessing the rate and extent of the adoption of emerging technologies by Canadian financial institutions and the extent to which the regulatory environment facilitates their continued implementation. The analysis of emerging trends is based on examination of the practices and plans of 46 financial institutions in five jurisdictions (United States, France, Germany, United Kingdom, Australia) and a survey of Canadian financial institution executives. The focus is on five key technologies: the Internet, personal computer banking, smart cards, data warehousing, and document imaging. The rate of adoption of these technologies in the above jurisdictions is compared to their rate of adoption in Canadian financial institutions. Legal and regulatory factors that may impede the future adoption of emerging technologies are then discussed, including the requirement that documents be in writing, the use of electronic signatures, the security of electronic transactions, and jurisdictional issues.

Ensuring Failure by Jack Carr,G. Frank Mathewson,Neil Clayton Quigley,C.D. Howe Institute Pdf

Federal deposit insurance in Canada is provided by the Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation (CDIC), created by an act of Parliament in 1967 to guarantee certain types of deposits of member institutions up to a limit currently set at $60,000 for each account. This document examines this question and looks at financial system stability and deposit insurance in Canada. More precisely, it focuses on efficiency and political explanations for deposit insurance; the banking system before 1967; the effect of deposit insurance on the banking system; and regulations and depositor compensation.
