Sources and Contexts of the Book of Concord by Robert Kolb,James Arne Nestingen Pdf

Born in controversy and raised in university settings, the Lutheran reform movement was embroiled immediately, publicly, and perennially in theological disputes and political battles. While controversies during Martin Luther's lifetime centered on disagreements with Rome and Geneva, present and later differences emerged over interpreting Luther's and Melanchthon's theologies on such issues as governmental interference, liturgical practices, justification's implications for good works and sin, the Lord's supper, and election. It is this defining dis-concord, alternating with attempts at concord and conciliation, that is reflected in the documents newly translated in this indispensable documentary companion to The Book of Concord, which includes the works of Agricola, Eck, Chemnitz, Melanchthon, and Luther.

Transcendental Concord by Anonim Pdf

Transcendental Concord documents the spirit of Transcendentalism, the literary, social, and philosophical movement that arose in the mid-19th century. While the circle of Transcendentalists in New England was wide, at its center was a core group that lived in Concord, Massachusetts. Bronson Alcott and daughter Louisa May Alcott, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Henry David Thoreau lived within a few miles of each other for nearly 20 years, regularly meeting in each other's homes and on the paths of Walden Woods to discuss their writings and beliefs. In the course of a year and in every season North-Carolina based photographer Lisa McCarty photographed the sites where these Transcendentalists lived and wrote in Concord. McCarty's parallel reverence for the natural world is evident in her photographs which point to large and small variations in environment, season and light. McCarty uses long exposures and camera movement in order to capture these variations. Transcendental Concord pays homage to Transcendentalism not only in capturing a shared landscape, but in McCarty's technique: her keen observation of natural phenomena and openness to experimentation and chance.

Concord by Sarah Chapin,Claiborne Dawes,Alice Moulton Pdf

Concord's photographic history begins in the last third of the eighteenth century and, in this new collection of "then and now" photographs, there is an abundance of the earliest images that capture the old town and its townspeople. Modern images chosen for their resemblances or comparisons illustrate the originally rural community's transformation into a modern suburb and evoke thoughts of history's ever-turning progression. Many of the older images in Then & Now: Concord have been given to the authors especially for this publication. Many are part of the Concord Free Public Library's Special Collection. Most of the modern photographs have been made by photographers Claiborne Dawes and Alice Moulton. Their images show such compelling comparisons as fathers and sons, old houses renovated or replaced with other structures, and the famous old authors with recent famous new ones. Then & Now: Concord will bring murmurs of reminiscence to residents and expressions of interest and curiosity to visitors seeking depth to their understanding of this important New England town.

Concord Township by Daniel Maxson & Debra L. Bechel-Esker Pdf

Located in northeast Ohio, Concord Township was carved from lands once known as Connecticut's Western Reserve. The first settlers arrived around 1802 by foot or oxcart and were hardy New Englanders who populated the three main creeks that emptied into nearby Lake Erie. They cleared wooded land to make way for farms and a burgeoning local economy of mills, tanneries, and artisans. After Concord Township was founded in 1822, astute local businessmen prospered into the late 1880s, when depleted natural resources and the emergence of rail lines ended that era of prosperity. Enough fertile land remained to support farms into the 1950s. The beauty of the area attracted families in search of healthy country living. This photographic history of the local agriculture, businesses, homes, schools, people, and resources shows how Concord Township continues to develop today and the diverse community of 20,000 maintains a legacy that connects its past with the present.

Legendary Locals of Concord by Michael Eury Pdf

The area that would soon be known as Concord had barely been settled in May 1771 when nine of its young men courageously orchestrated what many regard as the first colonial attack against the British crown. Their "gunpowder plot" blazed a trail for future legendary locals, from the industrial and philanthropic dynasties of the Cannons and Coltranes to African American vanguards Warren C. Coleman and Mable Parker McLean. With unparalleled passion and, often, Southern sass, Concordians stand up for their beliefs, from Confederate officer Rufus Barringer to crusading newspaperman James P. Cook to bulldozer-defying preservationist Mary Snead Boger. Hometown hero Quincy Collins credits his upbringing for anchoring his sanity while a prisoner of war, and the city's splendor has attracted celebrities like enigmatic screen siren Elizabeth Threatt and The Sound of Music star Daniel Truhitte to settle here. Whether we know them as "Bear," "Mr. Democrat," "Mayor Mac," or "Humpy," they are the favorite sons and daughters of Concord and their stories--from the inspirational to the comical--are collected in this keepsake volume.

Concord and the Civil War by Rick Frese Pdf

While the shots of the Civil War were largely fired far from Walden Pond, Concord did more than its part in fighting for "cause and comrades." As its boys marched into battle, the Concord Soldiers Aid Society sent clothing and sustenance to the battlefront. The community hosted leaders of the antislavery movement, including Emerson, Thoreau, the Alcotts and Frederick Douglass. Brave Concordians such as Louisa May Alcott joined the fray as nurses alongside more than 450 soldiers from Concord. Author Rick Frese explores Concord's Civil War, at home, on the road, in battles and encampments and on through to victory.

Strict Negative Concord in Slavic and Finno-Ugric by Gréte Dalmi,Jacek Witkoś,Piotr Cegłowski Pdf

Expressing negation is a universal property of all human languages. There is considerable variation, however, in the exact ways negation materializes cross-linguistically. Strict Negative Concord differs both from the Negative Polarity Item strategy and the Asymmetric Negative Concord strategy in that the sentence becomes negative only if the sentence negator is overtly expressed in it, irrespective of how many negative expressions are used. The central aim of this book is to describe Strict Negative Concord in some Slavic and Finno-Ugric languages. In particular, the volume gives an insight into the forms Strict Negative Concord manifests itself in Russian, Polish, Czech, Slovenian (Slavic), Finnish, Hungarian, Mari (Finno-Ugric) and the closely related Selkup (Samoyedic) to a wide linguistic community. It aims to create a platform for comparison with similar phenomena in well-described European languages.

The History of Concord, Massachusetts by Alfred Sereno Hudson Pdf

The text is closely confined to the colonial period; but the mode of presentation is extraordinary indeed to those accustomed to the prosaic methods of town and village historians. Mr. Hudson has tried to transport his readers and himself back two hundred years or more, as in a vision. In imagination we sit before the humble firesides of the first settlers; hear and join in their gossip, superstitions, and communings, social and religious; inspect their farm lands and homestends, and mark well and remember their boundaries and their family histories. At the same moment we are supposed to be living in the present, and viewing these days through the customary haze of retrospect. It is asking a good deal of any one to fancy himself in two centuries at the same time, but Mr. Hudson's humor is insistent on this point, and he keeps up the illusion, which is, unfortunately. no illusion whatever, and then finds himself on the safe road of steady and progressive narrative.
