Constructive Imperialism by L. S. Amery Pdf

L. S. Amery's 'Constructive Imperialism' is a thought-provoking and challenging exploration of British imperialism at the height of the Empire. Amery argues that imperialism is not simply a matter of conquest and domination, but can be a force for good in the world. He proposes a vision of 'constructive' imperialism that seeks to improve the lives of the colonized peoples and foster development and progress in the colonies. This book remains relevant today, as it grapples with many of the same issues and challenges that continue to shape our world. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. "[...]interests of the workers-restrictions as to hours, methods of working, sanitary conditions, and so forth-all excellent, all laudable, but expensive, and from which the foreign maker is often absolutely, and always comparatively, free. The Tariff Reformer is all for the open market, but he is for fair play as between those who compete in it, and he holds that even cheapness ought not to be sought at the expense of unfairness to the British producer. I say, then, that the Tariff Reformer starts with the idea of a moderate all-round tariff. But he is not going to ride his principle to death. He is essentially practical. There are some existing duties, like those on alcoholic liquors, the high rate of which is justified for other than fiscal reasons. He sees no reason to lower these duties. On[...]".

Constructive Imperialism, Experts and Crisis in Colonial Cyprus by Serkan Karas Pdf

This book explores the colonial history of Cyprus through the history of technology. Based on materialist and actor-network approaches to power, it unfolds the role of technology in the formation of British colonial rule during critical episodes in Cyprus. It considers the entanglement of colonial rule and technology in four cases of infrastructural development: the island-wide electrification project, Famagusta and Larnaca Harbours, and the Cyprus Government Railway. Throughout these cases, the reader will discover the expert-based, developmentalist and material ways of governing crises with which the British Empire expected to reproduce and prolong its rule on the island.

Constructive Imperialism by Viscount Alfred Milner Milner Pdf

As this is a Tariff Reform meeting pure and simple, I am anxious not to approach the subject in any party spirit or in any spirit of acrimonious controversy. The question is a difficult and complicated one, and though I am a strong Tariff Reformer myself I hope I am not incapable of seeing both sides of the case. I certainly should have reason to be ashamed if I could not be fair to those whom, for the sake of brevity and convenience, I will call Free Traders, though I do not altogether admit the correctness of that designation.

My views were once the same as theirs, and though I long ago felt constrained to modify them, and had become a Tariff Reformer some years before the subject attained its present prominence in public discussion, it would ill become me to treat as foolish arguments which I once found so convincing or to vilify opinions which I once honestly shared.

Constructive Imperialism: Five Speeches Delivered at Tunbridge Wells, October, 24, 1907 by Alfred Milner Pdf

This collection of speeches by British statesman Alfred Milner argues for a more systematic and benevolent form of imperialism than had hitherto prevailed. Milner defends British rule in South Africa and describes the challenges facing the British Empire in India, Egypt, and other territories. He advocates for increased investment in education, public health, and infrastructure in colonial territories, as well as greater respect for local customs and traditions. Protection and Politics by Anna Gambles Pdf

Examination of debate within the Conservative party over the principles of free trade. The complex and troubled relationship between protectionism and Conservatism in nineteenth-century Britain is the focus of this book. It looks at how the developing free-trade orthodoxy was challenged within Conservatism, and offers new perspectives on the intellectual controversies which precipitated the Conservative party's split of 1846 and the intricate denouement of 1846-52. In contrast to traditional accounts, it also seeks to explore the intellectual character of opposition to the evolving mid-Victorian consensus framed around free trade, laissez-faire and sound money, revealing how Conservatives debated key aspects of economic policy. Through an exhaustive reading of Conservative journals, pamphlets and contributions to parliamentary debates, the author is able to expose an alternative set of ideas about the direction of British economic and social change and the role of government in moulding it. Dr ANNA GAMBLES is lecturer in modern British history, University of Kent at Canterbury.

Arming the Western Front by Roger Lloyd-Jones,M.J. Lewis Pdf

The First World War was above all a war of logistics. Whilst the conflict will forever be remembered for the mud and slaughter of the Western Front, it was a war won on the factory floor as much as the battlefield. Examining the war from an industrial perspective, Arming the Western Front examines how the British between 1900 and 1920 set about mobilising economic and human resources to meet the challenge of 'industrial war'. Beginning with an assessment of the run up to war, the book examines Edwardian business-state relations in terms of armament supply. It then outlines events during the first year of the war, taking a critical view of competing constructs of the war and considering how these influenced decision makers in both the private and public domains. This sets the framework for an examination of the response of business firms to the demand for 'shells more shells', and their varying ability to innovate and manage changing methods of production and organisation. The outcome, a central theme of the book, was a complex and evolving trade-off between the quantity and quality of munitions supply, an issue that became particularly acute during the Battle of the Somme in 1916. This deepened the economic and political tensions between the military, the Ministry of Munitions, and private engineering contractors as the pressure to increase output accelerated markedly in the search for victory on the western front. The Great War created a dual army, one in the field, the other at home producing munitions, and the final section of the book examines the tensions between the two as the country strove for final victory and faced the challenges of the transition to the peace time economy.

Imperial Britain by Andrew S. Thompson Pdf

This new study considers the impact of the empire upon modern British political culture. The economic and cultural legacy of empire have received a great deal of attention, but historians have neglected the effects of empire upon the domestic British political scene. Dr Thompson explores economic, demographic, intellectual and military influences and he shows how parliamentary and party opinion interacted with imperial ideas and interests in the country at large. This is a major new book which explores the ideology of key imperial campaigns, and their popular support. It makes a critical contribution to recent debates -- about the importance of empire to the nature and development of British national identities before and after the First World War.
