Contemporary Jewelry Art by Design-Ma-Ma Pdf

Contemporary Jewellery Art presents the work of more than forty of the best and brightest young jewelry designers around the world. Their work is not about luxury or even permanence. Rather, the works within focus on the most creative use of common, inexpensive materials. The book is organized according to the materials used, including metal, ceramics, stone, wood, fur, textiles, plastic, soap, and rubber. The aesthetic of each piece, whether simple or sculpturally intricate, balances the designers unique perspective with the constraints and possibilities of each medium from the elasticity of plastic to the solid weight of stone, silver, and iron. Interviews with each designer illuminating the concept and creative work process renders this book a useful guide for everyone from the established jewelry designer to the independent crafter hoping to break into the industry. Designers featured include Hanna Hedman, Helfried Kodr, Mari Ishikawa, Iris Bodemer, Karl Fritsch, Marina Messone, Annika Pettersson, Maria Cristina Bellucci, Mirla Fernandes, and Timothy McMahon.

Contemporary American Jewelry Design by Ettagale Blauer Pdf

The Phenomenon of Studio Goldsmithing When the history of art in the 1980s is written, much of it will be etched in gold. This is the time of the contemporary goldsmith, an artist who chooses to work in precious metals rather than oils or marble. The contemporary jeweler-as-artist has only recently become a re cognized force. With rare exceptions, the whole field is little more than thirty years old. But it is only within the past fifteen years that these jewelers have entered the jewelry mainstream. The phenomenon of contemporary goldsmithing embraces an eclectic group of artists, each with a unique vision, each taking a per sonal path to jewelry producing. They have as little relationship to the typical, mass-produced jewelry as a champagne maker has to a bottler of orange soda. They approach a piece of art, not a piece of metal. The work is personal and a perfect expression of the "back to the land" movement that spawned it. Many of these goldsmiths were looking not merely for a way to make a living but for a way to make a life that was worthy of living. Running a business while trying to remain a creative metalsmith at the same time is the ongoing challenge. The jeweler-artists have solved or resolved these often conflicting needs in slightly different ways and in a beautiful variety of techniques and styles. Their meth ods, their growth, and their work are discussed here.

Contemporary Jewellery in Portugal by Christina Filipe Pdf

With Contemporary Jewellery in Portugal Cristina Filipe presents a comprehensive examination of the history of Portuguese studio jewellery from the dawn of the avant-garde in the 1960s through to the contemporary trends of the early twenty-first century. Filipe sheds light on societal upheavals as well as on the actors who helped to transform jewellery design in Portugal. For here, too -- and even under the pressure and restrictions of the Estado Novo dictatorship under António de Oliveira Salazar (1930s through to the so-called Carnation Revolution of 1974) -- artists reacted to international influences and developed their specific responses to them. Courtesy of numerous interviews with protagonists from the different generations, the author has accomplished a detailed record of developments and trends in contemporary jewellery in Portugal.

Art as Jewellery by Louisa Guinness Pdf

"The women in Man Ray's life, as well as his reverence for the female form more broadly, were reflected in his jewellery. He kept the wearer in mind with each piece; never impractical or obtrusive, his jewels played with illusion, language and form as he employed the medium to further explore the artistic preoccupations of his career." Art as Jewellery is a visually stunning introduction to jewellery made by the titans of twentieth and twenty-first century art. From Salvador Dali, Man Ray, Alexander Calder and Pablo Picasso, through to Anish Kapoor, Damien Hirst and Grayson Perry, the great figures of modern art have all turned both thought and talent to jewellery. Often, they have eschewed the traditional jeweller's preoccupation with material value and provenance, more concerned with the conceptual or aesthetic significance of their work. As is fitting for a book that covers a range of artists, every image is as striking as it is unique. By using contemporary pictures, Art as Jewellery develops a chronological timeline of jewellery presentation. Its pages are home to a stunning variety of design sketches and photographs. Some were shot by renowned 20th century photographers, such as Ugo Mulas and Antonia Mulas, while others have been buried in archives for decades, unseen since the '60s. In contrast, modern works have been given model treatment by top photographer Alexander English, making this book a glamorous blend of new and classic jewellery art. AUTHOR: Author Louisa Guinness, collector and gallery owner, provides insightful commentary on each artist and their work. Her input can be felt on a personal level; having worked alongside many of these artists as they developed their jewellery, she is in the perfect position to reveal the personal stories behind these pieces creation. Full-page colour photographs and sketches, some showing the artist at work in the studio, or with their muse, accompany each profile. Louisa also explores each artist in the context of the genre's evolution, looking at the key exhibitions that have shaped the interest of artists and collectors. This book will be of interest to jewellery and art lovers alike. SELLING POINTS: * Includes an introduction by Vivienne Becker, an award-winning jewellery writer, and a contribution from Julia Peyton Jones, previous director of the Serpentine Gallery, London * A marvellous array of images, from archived photographs and sketches that have not been seen since the '60s, and the work of 20th-century photographers such as Ugo Mulas and Antonia Mulas, to modern shoots by Alexander English 200 colour images

One of a Kind by Susan Grant Lewin Pdf

"Jewelry as art is America's most provocative current art form. This is jewelry that must be evaluated, like fine art, for its ideas, inventions, intuitions, and content rather than for its precious materials or conformity to tradition. Yet it is art that can be worn, and as such has a unique advantage over all other mediums in its direct contact with the body, giving it an engaging intimacy." "Since World War II, the field of art jewelry has bloomed prodigiously, thanks to the talents of a richly diverse group of practitioners who have explored the range of the art and the possibilities of the craft. Here, Susan Grant Lewin profiles 54 of the best artist/jewelers among a growing number who speak to jewelry's history and traditions as well as addressing contemporary conceptual and cultural issues." "These 54 jewelers are showcased here with individual profiles, illustrated with several examples of their work, all reproduced in full color. A much-needed overview of this exciting new area, One of a Kind: American Art Jewelry Today discusses the definition of art jewelry, presents a history of the studio jewelry movement in America tracing the developments that have led up to the current period, and explores art jewelry's bonds with contemporary sculpture." "Two forewords open the book: one by noted art critic Barbara Rose, who looks at the historical context of jewelry by artists and jewelry in art, and the other by Jack Lenor Larsen, America's foremost artist/artisan/designer. There are also essays by Suzanne Ramljak, editor-in-chief of Sculpture magazine, and art historian Toni Greenbaum. A glossary, bibliography, and index complete the book."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved
