Self-Driving Cars by Subcommittee on Digital Commerce and Con,Subcommittee on Subcommittee on Digital Commerce and Consumer Protection of the Committee on Energy and Commerce House of Representatives Pdf

While projections for the development of self-driving vehicles remains years out, advanced driver assistance systems that offer self semi-autonomous driving capabilities are entering the marketplace today. Advanced driver assistance systems are crash avoidance technologies that can protect drivers, reduce crashes, and enhance the convenience of driving. Forward collision warning, blind spot detection, and lane departure warnings are examples of advanced driver assistance systems. These systems help drivers make safer decisions on the road by providing real-time information about surrounding roadway activity. The driver can receive this information through audible tones, steering wheel vibrations, or small flashing lights on side mirrors alerting the driver of potential safety hazards on the road. Increasingly, advanced driver assistance systems now entering the market are capable of taking a more active role in the driving task. Innovative systems such as automatic emergency braking and lane departure prevention can temporarily take control over parts of the vehicle's critical safety functions such as braking or steering. This can occur by the system either applying the brakes without input from the driver or steering the vehicle back into marked lanes following unintended drifting. Through technological advances by manufacturers and equipment suppliers, basic driver assistance systems are taking on more advanced capabilities that assume greater control of the vehicle's critical safety functions throughout a driving trip. The progression of these technologies is incrementally removing the human driver from the driving task and paving the way to full autonomy.

Autonomous Driving by Markus Maurer,J. Christian Gerdes,Barbara Lenz,Hermann Winner Pdf

This book takes a look at fully automated, autonomous vehicles and discusses many open questions: How can autonomous vehicles be integrated into the current transportation system with diverse users and human drivers? Where do automated vehicles fall under current legal frameworks? What risks are associated with automation and how will society respond to these risks? How will the marketplace react to automated vehicles and what changes may be necessary for companies? Experts from Germany and the United States define key societal, engineering, and mobility issues related to the automation of vehicles. They discuss the decisions programmers of automated vehicles must make to enable vehicles to perceive their environment, interact with other road users, and choose actions that may have ethical consequences. The authors further identify expectations and concerns that will form the basis for individual and societal acceptance of autonomous driving. While the safety benefits of such vehicles are tremendous, the authors demonstrate that these benefits will only be achieved if vehicles have an appropriate safety concept at the heart of their design. Realizing the potential of automated vehicles to reorganize traffic and transform mobility of people and goods requires similar care in the design of vehicles and networks. By covering all of these topics, the book aims to provide a current, comprehensive, and scientifically sound treatment of the emerging field of “autonomous driving".

Decision Making, Planning, and Control Strategies for Intelligent Vehicles by Haotian Cao,Mingjun Li,Song Zhao,Xiaolin Song Pdf

The intelligent vehicle will play a crucial and essential role in the development of the future intelligent transportation system, which is developing toward the connected driving environment, ultimate driving safety, and comforts, as well as green efficiency. While the decision making, planning, and control are extremely vital components of the intelligent vehicle, these modules act as a bridge, connecting the subsystem of the environmental perception and the bottom-level control execution of the vehicle as well. This short book covers various strategies of designing the decision making, trajectory planning, and tracking control, as well as share driving, of the human-automation to adapt to different levels of the automated driving system. More specifically, we introduce an end-to-end decision-making module based on the deep Q-learning, and improved path-planning methods based on artificial potentials and elastic bands which are designed for obstacle avoidance. Then, the optimal method based on the convex optimization and the natural cubic spline is presented. As for the speed planning, planning methods based on the multi-object optimization and high-order polynomials, and a method with convex optimization and natural cubic splines, are proposed for the non-vehicle-following scenario (e.g., free driving, lane change, obstacle avoidance), while the planning method based on vehicle-following kinematics and the model predictive control (MPC) is adopted for the car-following scenario. We introduce two robust tracking methods for the trajectory following. The first one, based on nonlinear vehicle longitudinal or path-preview dynamic systems, utilizes the adaptive sliding mode control (SMC) law which can compensate for uncertainties to follow the speed or path profiles. The second one is based on the five-degrees-of-freedom nonlinear vehicle dynamical system that utilizes the linearized time-varying MPC to track the speed and path profile simultaneously. Toward human-automation cooperative driving systems, we introduce two control strategies to address the control authority and conflict management problems between the human driver and the automated driving systems. Driving safety field and game theory are utilized to propose a game-based strategy, which is used to deal with path conflicts during obstacle avoidance. Driver's driving intention, situation assessment, and performance index are employed for the development of the fuzzy-based strategy. Multiple case studies and demos are included in each chapter to show the effectiveness of the proposed approach. We sincerely hope the contents of this short book provide certain theoretical guidance and technical supports for the development of intelligent vehicle technology.

Enhanced Trustworthiness and End User Acceptance of Conditionally Automated Vehicles in the Transition Period by Daniel Watzenig,Lisa-Marie Schicker Pdf

A key factor for the introduction of (conditionally) automated vehicles is a high level of trust in and acceptance of these vehicles by the end-user. To bring such so-called TrustVehicles on the road, the end-users and their expectations have to be strongly taken into consideration by, for instance, developing driver interfaces as well as reliable and robust automated driving controllers. The main topics of the book are ranging from the question of how these TrustVehicles should behave and interact with users, the development of reliable sense-plan-act approaches, the whole verification procedures starting with simulation to studies on the driving simulator and the verification on a test track. All these steps together provide an overall picture and pave the way to trustworthy and reliable automated vehicles – so-called TrustVehicles.
