Coordinating Technology by Susanne K. Schmidt,Raymund Werle Pdf
In Coordinating Technology, Susanne Schmidt and Raymund Werle present three case studies that highlight the actors, the process, the politics, and the influence exerted by international organizations in the construction of standards. The case studies concern the standards for facsimile terminals and transmission, videotex (a service that, with the exception of the French Minitel service, largely failed), and electronic mail. Schmidt and Werle follow each story from the realization by certain actors of the need for a standard, through complex negotiation processes involving many economic, political, and social interests, to the final agreement on a standard. In their analysis of these cases, they emphasize the many ways in which the processes are embedded in institutional structures and argue for the value of an institutionalist approach to technology studies.

Coordination Theory and Collaboration Technology by Gary M. Olson,Thomas W. Malone,John B. Smith Pdf
The National Science Foundation funded the first Coordination Theory and Collaboration Technology initiative to look at systems that support collaborations in business and elsewhere. This book explores the global revolution in human interconnectedness. It will discuss the various collaborative workgroups and their use in technology. The initiative focuses on processes of coordination and cooperation among autonomous units in human systems, in computer and communication systems, and in hybrid organizations of both systems. This initiative is motivated by three scientific issues which have been the focus of separate research efforts, but which may benefit from collaborative research. The first is the effort to discover the principles underlying how people collaborate and coordinate work efficiently and productively in environments characterized by a high degree of decentralized computation and decision making. The second is to gain a better fundamental understanding of the structure and outputs of organizations, industries, and markets which incorporate sophisticated, decentralized information and communications technology as an important component of their operations. The third is to understand problems of coordination in decentralized or open computer systems.

Coordination and Agent Technology in Value Networks by Martin Bichler Pdf
New approaches and technologies are required to coordinate the interdependent interests of economic entities. Distributed decision making and self-organization become increasingly important where hierarchical planning reaches its limits. Therefore, innovative solutions have to face those challenges allowing especially for coordination and information processing between distributed entities. In particular market-based coordination mechanisms provide this opportunity; they can be efficiently combined with powerful technologies like software agents to build the flexible coordination infrastructures for today's and tomorrow's electronic business. Science and industry will have to collaborate. Not only to identify the challenges of the prospering information society and to bring them onto our research agendas. Consequently, the book at hand is targeted towards scientists and practitioners likewise.
Upgrading China's Information and Communication Technology Industry by Cassandra C Wang Pdf
This book effectively challenges the conventional wisdom regarding the cluster-innovation relationship and provides convincing evidence to show that the prevailing theoretical models derived from Anglo–American experiences cannot be uncritically applied to Chinese reality. This book introduces a new theory of state-firm coordination to explain why and how some Chinese ICT firms have turned out to be more innovative than others. Perspectives from the viewpoint of economic geography, institutional economics, political science, and regulation theory have been provided to throw light on the enigma that is China's ICT industry. Empirically, the book provides state-of-the-art findings to clarify the confusion and misunderstanding about the exact nature of the ICT industry in China. This book has essentially set a new baseline and made definitive contribution to knowledge production about China's economic geography. Methodologically, it shows how original, critical, and independent research can be undertaken effectively and innovatively through cross-disciplinary theoretical interaction, deductive reasoning with hypotheses testing, combination of multiple means of data collection; integration of quantitative and qualitative methods; and structured presentation of research findings with extensive tabular, graphic, and cartographic illustrations. Space Research: Content and Coordination of Space Science and Technology Strategy Need to be More Robust by Cristina Chaplain Pdf
Each year, the U.S. spends billions of dollars on space-based systems to support national security activities. The National Defense Authorization Act for FY 2010 requires the DoD and the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) to develop and issue a space science and technology (S&T) strategy every two years addressing S&T goals and a process for achieving these goals, among other requirements. This report addresses: (1) the extent to which the strategy meets the statutory requirements; (2) if other approaches could be used to enhance the usefulness of the strategy; and (3) the extent of coordination efforts used in developoing the strategy.
