Cora's Kitchen by Kimberly Garrett Brown Pdf

It is 1928 and Cora James, a 35-year-old Black librarian who works at the 135th Street library in Harlem, writes Langston Hughes a letter after identifying with one of his poems. She even reveals her secret desire to write. Langston responds, encouraging Cora to enter a writing contest sponsored by the National Urban League, and ignites her dream of being a writer. Cora is frustrated with the writing process, and her willingness to help her cousin Agnes keep her job after she is brutally beaten by her husband lands Cora in a white woman's kitchen working as a cook. In the Fitzgerald home, Cora discovers she has time to write and brings her notebook to work. When she comforts Mrs. Fitzgerald after an argument with Mr. Fitzgerald, a friendship forms. Mrs. Fitzgerald insists Cora call her Eleanor and gives her The Awakening by Kate Chopin to read. Cora is inspired by the conversation to write a story and sends it to Langston. Eventually she begins to question her life and marriage and starts to write another story about a woman's sense of self. Through a series of letters, and startling developments in her dealings with the white family, Cora's journey to becoming a writer takes her to the brink of losing everything, including her life.

Cat Cora's Classics with a Twist by Cat Cora,Ann Krueger Spivack Pdf

The Iron Chef offers over 100 fast & fresh recipes offering modern, healthy takes on popular favorites. On the wildly popular show Iron Chef America, Cat Cora fires up the imagination of millions of cooks by improvising exciting dishes while the clock is ticking. Now in Cat Cora’s Classics with a Twist, she shares recipes she makes where cooking really counts: at home. If you’re searching for casual fare that looks as if you spent hours on it (but takes a fraction of the time), you’ll want to try tomato-mozzarella skewers with Blood Mary vinaigrette (witch crispy onion rings on the side), fettucine with scallops and lime, and blueberry-lemon poppyseed upside-down cake. And if you need fast, healthful meals, you’ll find delicious inspiration in this book. These are the meals Cat puts together after work for her own family, including her four boys under the age of seven: enchilada pie, easy chicken curry, bucatini pasta with bacon, and crispy baked fish sticks with honey mustard dipping sauce. Wish your favorite dishes were a little faster, fresher, and brighter-flavored? Then you’ll welcome Cat’s take on the classics: baked “fried calamari, soft tacos with grilled flank steak and pineapple salsa, and cherry-filled chocolate cupcakes. Many, like Greek-style nachos, “pulled pork” sloppy joes, and red velvet coconut cake, are Cat’s spins on foods she enjoyed as a child growing up in a Greek family in the South. Cat helps you sneak out a few calories (when it improves the taste) and freshen things up, slipping chipotle chili croutons into Caesar salad or lemongrass into coq au vin. She reveals the secrets she learned over decades of cooking in restaurants. Best of all, Cat shows you how to “twist” these recipes, changing each one in subtle or dramatic ways the next time to make it your very own. Praise for Cat Cora's Classics with a Twist “When . . . Cora sets out to provide unique flavors, she delivers. . . . Her more than 100 recipes touch on every part of the menu, adding not only new tastes, but also new knowledge.” —Booklist “Easily identifiable recipes like Chili and Minestrone are infused with Cora's signature zesty flair . . . and she certainly proves she's got a lot to offer. . . . Readers will easily identify with Cora's laid back, family-style approach to cooking, and find effective and valuable tips throughout. Over seventy full-color photos add style and remind the reader that casual trumps extravagant in Cora's kitchen. Her book will appeal to the home cook who wants to break from the monotony of the weeknight meal.” —Publishers Weekly

Breakfast with Cora by Cora Tsouflidou Pdf

BREAKFAST WITH CORA tells the story of Cora Tsouflidou, the founder of the hugely popular Chez Cora restaurant chain. From her childhood on the Gaspé Peninsula, to her failed marriage, to the opening of her first restaurant, to the creation of the Chez Cora Foundation, Cora shares with us her experiences as a woman, a mother and an entrepreneur. In May 1987, as a single mother with three teenagers, Cora bought a defunct snack bar in Ville Saint-Laurent. After only a few months of operation, she transformed it into a whole new breakfast concept in Quebec, specializing in fruit, omelettes, pancakes, and French toast. Inspired by family traditions, customer requests and suggestions from her children, Cora created new breakfasts that blended the best of the traditional with new health food trends. Today Cora is building one of the fastest-growing restaurant chains in Canada. Since 1987, the Quebec-based entrepreneur has overseen the launch of over 100 locations across Canada. Rich with personal anecdotes, Breakfast with Cora recounts the life of a woman of unstoppable enthusiasm and vision.

Mr. Splitfoot by Samantha Hunt Pdf

The strange odysseys of two young women animate this “hypnotic and glowing” American gothic novel that blurs the line between the real and the supernatural (Gregory Maguire, The New York Times Book Review). A New York Times Editors’ Choice A Paris Review Staff Pick Ruth and Nat are seventeen. They are orphans living at The Love of Christ! Foster Home in upstate New York. And they may be able to talk to the dead. Enter Mr. Bell, a con man with mystical interests who knows an opportunity when he sees one. Together they embark on an unexpected journey that connects meteor sites, utopian communities, lost mothers, and a scar that maps its way across Ruth’s face. Decades later, Ruth visits her niece, Cora. But while Ruth used to speak to the dead, she now doesn’t speak at all. Even so, she leads Cora on a mysterious mission that involves crossing the entire state of New York on foot. Where is she taking them? And who—or what—is hidden in the woods at the end of the road? “[A] gripping novel…The narratives, which twist together into a shocking dénouement, are marked by ghost stories.”—The New Yorker

Truth of the Divine by Lindsay Ellis Pdf

USA TODAY BESTSELLER Truth of the Divine is the latest alternate-history first-contact novel in the Noumena series from the instant New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Los Angeles Times bestselling author Lindsay Ellis. The human race is at a crossroads; we know that we are not alone, but details about the alien presence on Earth are still being withheld from the public. As the political climate grows more unstable, the world is forced to consider the ramifications of granting human rights to nonhuman persons. How do you define “person” in the first place? Cora Sabino not only serves as the full-time communication intermediary between the alien entity Ampersand and his government chaperones but also shares a mysterious bond with him that is both painful and intimate in ways neither of them could have anticipated. Despite this, Ampersand is still keen on keeping secrets, even from Cora, which backfires on them both when investigative journalist Kaveh Mazandarani, a close colleague of Cora’s unscrupulous estranged father, witnesses far more of Ampersand’s machinations than anyone was meant to see. Since Cora has no choice but to trust Kaveh, the two must work together to prove to a fearful world that intelligent, conscious beings should be considered persons, no matter how horrifying, powerful, or malicious they may seem. Making this case is hard enough when the public doesn’t know what it’s dealing with—and it will only become harder when a mysterious flash illuminates the sky, marking the arrival of an agent of chaos that will light an already-unstable world on fire. With a voice completely her own, Lindsay Ellis deepens her realistic exploration of the reality of a planet faced with the presence of extraterrestrial intelligence, probing the essential questions of humanity and decency, and the boundaries of the human mind. While asking the question of what constitutes a “person,” Ellis also examines what makes a monster.
