Costume in Roman Comedy (Classic Reprint) by Catharine Saunders Pdf

Excerpt from Costume in Roman Comedy It was originally my intention to consider the problem of masks along with that of costume. However, a mere summary of the literature of this question was hardly justifiable; on the other hand, it soon became evident that a thorough and independent investigation of the subject must be postponed, since the material involved is quite sufficient to form the basis of a separate mono graph. This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1909 edition. Excerpt: ...husband calls her a mulier odiosa (Haut. 1006) and asks her (1006-1008): ullam ego rem umquam in vita mea volui, quin tu in ea re mihi advorsatrix fueris, Sostrata? Of their son he says (1020-1021): nam tui similis est probe, nam illi nil vitist relictum, quin idem itidem sit tibi. Pollux, writing of the costume of women in Comedy, says (Onom. IV, 120): "H Si rSv vcW, Xivkt rj fivcrcrivr. 'EirucAipwy St, Xivkyj, upoaaarrij. TESTIMONY OF THE MINIATURES I have had access to twenty miniatures of Matronae and Mulieres--two from C, three from P, one from O, and the remaining fourteen from F. The one from O (of Nausistrata Mulier, Ph. 784) shows a long undergarment with long, flowing sleeves ornamented with a border.1 There are traces, too, of a border on the skirt. There is no mantle. In the remaining MSS. the representations of these three types of women show a long undergarment, sometimes the two sets of sleeves already so often described, less often the one set of sleeves, short and flowing.1 There is a mantle which follows the general lines of a pallium and not infrequently is so arranged as to pass over the head in folds.2 When the hair shows, it is commonly arranged with considerable care. 1 It will be remembered that this border is a characteristic feature of the miniatures in O. See p. 60, n. 2. These observations serve to confirm what Wieseler8 wrote more than half a century ago of the miniatures which he had examined: "In Betreff der Tracht der weiblichen Personen findet man im Allgemeinen eine Confusion, wie sie sich bei den mannlichen nicht in dem Grade zeigt." The only invariable distinction which I have been able to make between the costumes of Ancilla, Anus, Matrona, Mulier, and Uxor is that the Anus never has...

Comic Invective in Ancient Greek and Roman Oratory by Sophia Papaioannou,Andreas Serafim Pdf

This volume acknowledges the centrality of comic invective in a range of oratorical institutions (especially forensic and symbouleutic), and aspires to enhance the knowledge and understanding of how this technique is used in such con-texts of both Greek and Roman oratory. Despite the important scholarly work that has been done in discussing the patterns of using invective in Greek and Roman texts and contexts, there are still notable gaps in our knowledge of the issue. The introduction to, and the twelve chapters of, this volume address some understudied multi-genre and interdisciplinary topics: first, the ways in which comic invective in oratory draws on, or has implications for, comedy and other genres, or how these literary genres are influenced by oratorical theory and practice, and by contemporary socio-political circumstances, in articulating comic invective and targeting prominent individuals; second, how comic invective sustains relationships and promotes persuasion through unity and division; third, how it connects with sexuality, the human body and male/female physiology; fourth, what impact generic dichotomies, as, for example, public-private and defence-prosecution, may have upon using comic invective; and fifth, what the limitations in its use are, depending on the codes of honour and decency in ancient Greece and Rome.

The Stagecraft and Performance of Roman Comedy by C. W. Marshall Pdf

A comprehensive survey of Roman theatrical production, this book examines all aspects of Roman performance practice, and provides fresh insights on the comedies of Plautus and Terence. Following an introductory chapter on the experience of Roman comedy from the perspective of Roman actors and the Roman audience, addressing among other things the economic concerns of putting on a play in the Roman republic, subsequent chapters provide detailed studies of troupe size and the implications for role assignment, masks, stage action, music, and improvisation in the plays of Plautus and Terence. Marshall argues that Roman comedy was raw comedy, much more rough-and-ready than its Hellenistic precursors, but still fully conscious of its literary past. The consequences of this lead to fresh conclusions concerning the dramatic structure of Roman comedy, and a clearer understanding of the relationship between the plays-as-text and the role of improvisation during performance.

The Walking Muse by Kirk Freudenburg Pdf

In laying the groundwork for a fresh and challenging reading of Roman satire, Kirk Freudenburg explores the literary precedents behind the situations and characters created by Horace, one of Rome's earliest and most influential satirists. Critics tend to think that his two books of Satires are but trite sermons of moral reform--which the poems superficially claim to be--and that the reformer speaking to us is the young Horace, a naive Roman imitator of the rustic, self-made Greek philosopher Bion. By examining Horace's debt to popular comedy and to the conventions of Hellenistic moral literature, however, Freudenburg reveals the sophisticated mask through which the writer distances himself from the speaker in these earthy diatribes--a mask that enables the lofty muse of poetry to walk in satire's mundane world of adulterous lovers and quarrelsome neighbors. After presenting the speaker of the diatribes as a stage character, a version of the haranguing cynic of comedy and mime, Freudenburg explains the theoretical importance of such conventions in satire at large. His analysis includes a reinterpretation of Horace's criticisms of Lucilius, and ends with a theory of satire based on the several images of the satirist presented in Book One, which reveals the true depth of Horace's ethical and philosophical concerns.
