Country Doctor: Hilarious True Stories from a Rural Practice by Michael Sparrow Pdf

Have you ever had to decide what to do with an unidentified corpse by a Devonian cowshed when the herd is due in for milking? And how would you react if one of your patients was abducted by aliens? If you are a GP it seems these are routine matters. From coping with the suicide of a colleague to the unusual whereabouts of a jar of Coleman's mustard, this is the story of one rural doctor's often misguided attempts to make sense of the career in which he has unwittingly found himself. Dr Sparrow's adventures would be utterly unbelievable were they not 100% true stories. His bedside manner may sometimes leave a little to be desired but, if you're in dire straits, this doctor will have you in stitches.

Yet More Tales of a Country Doctor by Paul Carter Pdf

Yet More Tales of a Country Doctor is the third in Carter's trilogy of stories drawn from his much-loved rural practice, where he served the local community as their doctor for thirty-three years. The stories, which are all drawn from true events, reflect the very personal, as well as equal, relationships which are a feature of country life. Like life itself, many of these stories are simultaneously both funny and sad. Yet More Tales of a Country Doctor, through the exploits of the various characters, explores many of the issues which face us all, and celebrates the indomitable spirit of every day heroes in overcoming whatever obstacles might lie in their way. As with the two earlier books in the trilogy ("Tales of a country doctor", and "The further tales of a country doctor"), this collection of stories will keep you highly entertained, and stay in your mind for a long time to come.

Call the Nurse by Mary J. MacLeod Pdf

Tired of the pace and noise of life near London and longing for a better place to raise their young children, Mary J. MacLeod and her husband encountered their dream while vacationing on a remote island in the Scottish Hebrides. Enthralled by its windswept beauty, they soon were the proud owners of a near-derelict croft house—a farmer’s stone cottage—on “a small acre” of land. Mary assumed duties as the island’s district nurse. Call the Nurse is her account of the enchanted years she and her family spent there, coming to know its folk as both patients and friends. In anecdotes that are by turns funny, sad, moving, and tragic, she recalls them all, the crofters and their laird, the boatmen and tradesmen, young lovers and forbidding churchmen. Against the old-fashioned island culture and the grandeur of mountain and sea unfold indelible stories: a young woman carried through snow for airlift to the hospital; a rescue by boat; the marriage of a gentle giant and the island beauty; a ghostly encounter; the shocking discovery of a woman in chains; the flames of a heather fire at night; an unexploded bomb from World War II; and the joyful, tipsy celebration of a ceilidh. Gaelic fortitude meets a nurse’s compassion in these wonderful true stories from rural Scotland.

The Next Prescription by Jimmie L. Ashcraft M. D. Pdf

An African proverb says, "It takes an entire village to raise a child". The same can be said of physicians. No one traverses the journey through medical training and private practice by themselves because "the stars are aligned just right". The journey demands a considerable supportive effort from a village of many or perhaps many villages. This book contains my reflections upon my 26 years as an "old time" generalist family physician in rural America. It is merely a collection of stories that depict some of my experiences over the years. The stories mirror those of many of my generalist colleagues who have experienced "the trenches" of rural primary care. In fact, on occasion, I introduced myself as nothing more than a full time "trenchologist".My stories span the breadth and depth of the discipline of rural family medicine. Stories range from assisting mothers giving birth to caring for and comforting those at the end of life and from performing surgery to becoming involved in one's community. Some are silly, some are sad, some are funny, and some may make you mad.

Appointments with Heaven by Reggie Anderson,Jennifer Schuchmann Pdf

When Dr. Reggie Anderson is present at the bedside of a dying patient, something miraculous happens. Sometimes as he sits vigil and holds the patient's hand . . . he can experience what they feel and see as they cross over. Because of these God-given glimpses of the afterlife--his "appointments with heaven"--Reggie knows beyond a doubt that we are closer to the next world than we think. Join him as he shares remarkable stories from his life and practice, including the tragedy that nearly drove him away from faith forever. He reveals how what he's seen, heard, and experienced has shaped what he believes about living and dying; how we can face the passing of our loved ones with the courage and confidence that we will see them again; and how we can each prepare for our own "appointment with heaven." Soul-stirring and hope-filled, Appointments with Heaven is a powerful journey into the questions at the very core of your being: Is there more to life than this? What is heaven like? And, most important: Do I believe it enough to let it change me?

The Next Prescription by M. D. Jimmie Ashcraft,Jimmie Ashcraft MD Pdf

I have been most gratified with the positive response to my first book, Reflections of a Country Doctor. Many readers encouraged me to write another book that told the rest of my story. This book contains some of my experiences during my premedical and medical training years and more of my experiences during my twenty-six years as an "old time" family physician in rural America. Stories range from assisting mothers giving birth to caring for and comforting those at the end of life, from experiencing the joys of pediatrics to the frustrations of medical errors, from performing surgery to becoming involved in one's community, and from making routine home visits to providing life-ordeath emergency care. In keeping with the format of Reflections of a Country Doctor, some of the stories are silly, some are sad, some are funny, and some may make you mad. Doctor Ashcraft grew up as one of four brothers in a poor family in Montana. Despite a difficult childhood, he managed to work his way through college. He was the first graduate from Eastern Montana College to graduate from a medical school. He graduated from the University of Oregon Medical School. After his medical training he served in the National Health Service Corps. Doctor Ashcraft practiced as a family physician in Sidney, Montana, for twenty-five years. Afterward, he was a member of the faculty of the Montana Family Medicine Residency, a program that he helped to develop. Doctor Ashcraft was a member of the clinical faculty of the University of Washington Medical School for thirty years. He is a Lifetime Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. Doctor Ashcraft and his wife Kay still live in Montana. They have three children and six grandchildren.
