Planet VC by Terrance Philips,Jame DiBiasio Pdf

Venture capital (VC) is the business of financing the new—and making outsized profits. It grew up in Silicon Valley, backing the most influential companies known today, including Apple and Airbnb. It’s not the iPhone, but VC, that is Silicon Valley’s greatest export—it’s the key ingredient of innovation, and provides the toolkit for inventors and startup founders around the world to become powerful, multi-billion-dollar companies. Once other countries learned how to finance risky startups, they could unlock their own innovative energies. And where is VC placing its bets today? The answer is: everywhere. China. India. Israel. Brazil. Planet VC uncovers the story of how VC went global, transforming cities from Beijing to Bangalore into the techno-hubs of tomorrow. Authors Terrance Philips and Jame DiBiasio follow the money to understand how VC helped enable the rise of America’s global competitors, and where the world of innovation is headed next. What sectors or technologies are VCs backing in different parts of the world? How does VC work in countries as different as China and India? How do governments influence the funding of innovation? And how is technology, from blockchain to the metaverse, changing the nature of VC? By exploring these questions, through in-depth interviews with the people who pioneered venture investing around the world as well as with today’s industry leaders, Planet VC provides a unique and useful framework for understanding the future of global innovation.

Crypto-topographia by Christopher Middleton Pdf

Christopher Middleton s writing in Crypto-Topographia falls within the genre of short prose, which Middleton defines as liminal, ludic and disruptive . Many of the texts concern places, singly or clustered, which offer their own secret store of time: lived time, signs of presence, whispers or howls. Time is stretched back, folded or pretended, and can transform a group of trees into the locus of a drama (A Close Shave With Sacrilege ). Sometimes place is supplanted by object: sliding carpets and material colour Dispersed among variously situated texts, history scintillates, not as a plan, but as an ensemble of glimpses. The epilogue records a strange episode of travel, The Gaze of the Turkish Mona Lisa, a masterly description of a Turkish lady, whom Middleton manages to depict, while refraining from looking at her."

Governable Spaces by Nathan Schneider Pdf

A free ebook version of this title is available through Luminos, University of California Press's Open Access publishing program. Visit www.luminosoa.org to learn more. When was the last time you participated in an election for an online group chat or sat on a jury for a dispute about a controversial post? Platforms nudge users to tolerate nearly all-powerful admins, moderators, and "benevolent dictators for life." In Governable Spaces, Nathan Schneider argues that the internet has been plagued by a phenomenon he calls "implicit feudalism": a bias, both cultural and technical, for building communities as fiefdoms. The consequences of this arrangement matter far beyond online spaces themselves, as feudal defaults train us to give up on our communities' democratic potential, inclining us to be more tolerant of autocratic tech CEOs and authoritarian tendencies among politicians. But online spaces could be sites of a creative, radical, and democratic renaissance. Using media archaeology, political theory, and participant observation, Schneider shows how the internet can learn from governance legacies of the past to become a more democratic medium, responsive and inventive unlike anything that has come before.

Reading Marx in the Information Age by Christian Fuchs Pdf

Renowned Marxist scholar and critical media theorist Christian Fuchs provides a thorough, chapter-by-chapter introduction to Capital Volume 1 that assists readers in making sense of Karl Marx’s most important and groundbreaking work in the information age, exploring Marx’s key concepts through the lens of media and communication studies via contemporary phenomena like the Internet, digital labour, social media, the media industries, and digital class struggles. Through a range of international, current-day examples, Fuchs emphasises the continued importance of Marx and his work in a time when transnational media companies like Amazon, Google, and Facebook play an increasingly important role in global capitalism. Discussion questions and exercises at the end of each chapter help readers to further apply Marx’s work to a modern-day context.

The Evolution of Money by David Orrell,Roman Chlupatý Pdf

The sharing economy's unique customer-to-company exchange is possible because of the way in which money has evolved. These transactions have not always been as fluid as they are today, and they are likely to become even more fluid. It is therefore critical that we learn to appreciate money's elastic nature as deeply as do Uber, Airbnb, Kickstarter, and other innovators, and that we understand money's transition from hard currencies to cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin if we are to access their cooperative potential. The Evolution of Money illuminates this fascinating reality, focusing on the tension between currency's real and abstract properties and advancing a vital theory of money rooted in this dual exchange. It begins with the debt tablets of Mesopotamia and follows with the development of coin money in ancient Greece and Rome, gold-backed currencies in medieval Europe, and monetary economics in Victorian England. The book ends in the digital era, with the cryptocurrencies and service providers that are making the most of money's virtual side and that suggest a tectonic shift in what we call money. By building this organic time line, The Evolution of Money helps us anticipate money's next, transformative role.
