Creature Discomforts by Susan Conant Pdf

A hike in the woods has memorable consequences for dog writer Holly Winter in this latest of Susan Conant's Dog Lover's Mysteries. When Holly Winter awakens, battered and bruised, clinging to a boulder on the side of a cliff, she doesn't even recognize her own beloved malamutes, Rowdy and Kimi, much less remember their names--or her own. She does, however, realize they're her dogs, and that she is--to put it mildly--a "dog person." And she vaguely remembers hearing a sinister voice from above. Putting clues together, she discovers that she is in Acadia National Park, on Mount Desert Island, Maine, and that she's the guest of one Gabrielle Beamon, a most attractive and charming woman, whom Holly doesn't recognize at all. When it is discovered that there was another fall, this one fatal, at approximately the same time and close to the same place as Holly's, she begins to fear for her own safety. In fact, she has all she can do to figure out what's going on without giving away her own loss of memory. You'll be licking your chops with glee as the dog fanciers in Conant's eclectic and eccentric group of characters once more prove themselves smarter and more resourceful in every way than their more anthropocentric counterparts. Animated Film and Disability by Slava Greenberg Pdf

While many live-action films portray disability as a spectacle, "crip animation" (a genre of animated films that celebrates disabled people's lived experiences) uses a variety of techniques like clay animation, puppets, pixilation, and computer-generated animation to represent the inner worlds of people with disabilities. Crip animation has the potential to challenge the ableist gaze and immerse viewers in an alternative bodily experience. In Animated Film and Disability, Slava Greenberg analyzes over 30 animated works about disabilities, including Rocks in My Pockets, An Eyeful of Sound, and A Shift in Perception. He considers the ableism of live-action cinematography, the involvement of filmmakers with disabilities in the production process, and the evocation of the spectators' senses of sight and hearing, consequently subverting traditional spectatorship and listenership hierarchies. In addition, Greenberg explores physical and sensory accessibility in theaters and suggests new ways to accommodate cinematic screenings. Offering an introduction to disability studies and crip theory for film, media, and animation scholars, Animated Film and Disability demonstrates that crip animation has the power to breach the spectator's comfort, evoking awareness of their own bodies and, in certain cases, their social privileges.

Breakfast at Noon by C. R. Yeager Pdf

Like a casualty of the Salem witch trials, the Sandwich Generation is feeling squeezed to death. C.R. Yeager skewers a kebab of aggravations in this satirical celebration of mid-life—ranging from childhood legacy to the marital dynamic, fashion victimhood, and the not-so-simple art of living on a slab. Written with a dyslexic's appreciation of the absurd, Breakfast at Noon is a cracked valentine to the process of surviving the inevitable.

Trail Mix by T. Duren Jones Pdf

Going hiking? Don’t forget to pack these bite-sized, mostly true stories from the wilderness, featuring those who survived the author’s adventures. T. Duren Jones loves hiking wilderness trails. He gets out as often as he can, and enjoys taking friends and family on his explorations. Most of those who have joined his adventures still talk to him. He has hiked hundreds of trails in the American West, has summited all of the fifty-four Colorado 14,000 ft. peaks (now on his second round with his granddaughter), and has trekked the nearly 500 miles of the Colorado Trail’s twenty-eight segments from Denver to Durango. Once he’s done with one checklist, he on to the next—this guy is nuts! This book is a follow-up to Tales from the Trails, this time with new stories presented in bite-sized pieces. Snack on a few at a time, but you might not want to put it down and end up eating, er, reading, the whole package in one sitting. As with his previous book, Trail Mix is part adventure, part travelogue, part motivational encouragement, part cautionary tale, and part stand-up comedy (at least the author thinks so). Trail Mix is for anyone who loves spending time in the outdoors, who wishes they could be outdoors more, or who simply enjoys reading about nuts who spend time in the great outdoors. The author hopes by sharing these adventures—and misadventures—that the readers will be inspired to go out and discover their own stories.

BOYS WILL BE BOYS and FIVE ONE-ACT PLAYS by Robert Manns Pdf

With the loosening of constraints on what may be discussed and portrayed in plays dealing with homosexuality, similar relaxation should be expected for heterosexual works. Within the bounds of good taste, of course. And taste, like time, alters. Hopefully, the time is now. *** In an age of miniaturization, the one-act play should find itself at home. People do attend concertized etudes, most often for the piano, and that is precisely what a one-act play is--an etude. Sometimes it's a character study, others a piece of action, still others a complete little story, and several strung together selectively can make a program.

The Animation Studies Reader by Nichola Dobson,Annabelle Honess Roe,Amy Ratelle,Caroline Ruddell Pdf

The Animation Studies Reader brings together both key writings within animation studies and new material in emerging areas of the field. The collection provides readers with seminal texts that ground animation studies within the contexts of theory and aesthetics, form and genre, and issues of representation. The first section collates key readings on animation theory, on how we might conceptualise animation, and on some of the fundamental qualities of animation. New material is also introduced in this section specifically addressing questions raised by the nature, style and materiality of animation. The second section outlines some of the main forms that animation takes, which includes discussions of genre. Although this section cannot be exhaustive, the material chosen is particularly useful as it provides samples of analysis that can illuminate some of the issues the first section of the book raises. The third section focuses on issues of representation and how the medium of animation might have an impact on how bodies, gender, sexuality, race and ethnicity are represented. These representations can only be read through an understanding of the questions that the first two sections of the book raise; we can only decode these representations if we take into account form and genre, and theoretical conceptualisations such as visual pleasure, spectacle, the uncanny, realism etc.

Being-in-Creation by Bruce Ellis Benson,Norman Wirzba Pdf

What is the proper relationship between human beings and the more-than-human world? This philosophical question, which underlies vast environmental crises, forces us to investigate the tension between our extraordinary powers, which seem to set us apart from nature, even above it, and our thoroughgoing ordinariness, as revealed by the evolutionary history we share with all life. The contributors to this volume ask us to consider whether the anxiety of unheimlichkeit, which in one form or another absorbed so much of twentieth-century philosophy, might reveal not our homelessness in the cosmos but a need for a fundamental belongingness and implacement in it.

How to Make Friends and Monsters by Ron Bates Pdf

Howard Boward, a 13-year-old boy-genius with a chip on his shoulder is too smart for his own good. He has troubles making friends—possibly because he complains so much. Until one day a science experiment goes haywire, and Howard creates a best friend for himself—Franklin—who also happens to be a monster. Creating Franklin was an accident, not like Howard was playing God or anything—or so Howard tells himself. Franklin and Howard are having so much fun, Howard decides to create more “friends,” using DNA from kids at school. Only, these friends aren’t quite as friendly. Soon there’s a major mess and Howard has to sort it all out before the monsters destroy their human counterparts. But terminating the monsters proves harder than he imagined. They didn’t choose to be monsters; they can’t go against their innate nature. Howard finds himself facing consequences for playing God. Getting rid of the monsters means learning to tame his own inner beast, and Howard begins to understand the meaning of free will and true friendship

The Accidental Ecosystem by Peter S. Alagona Pdf

One of Smithsonian Magazine's Favorite Books of 2022 With wildlife thriving in cities, we have the opportunity to create vibrant urban ecosystems that serve both people and animals. The Accidental Ecosystem tells the story of how cities across the United States went from having little wildlife to filling, dramatically and unexpectedly, with wild creatures. Today, many of these cities have more large and charismatic wild animals living in them than at any time in at least the past 150 years. Why have so many cities--the most artificial and human-dominated of all Earth's ecosystems--grown rich with wildlife, even as wildlife has declined in most of the rest of the world? And what does this paradox mean for people, wildlife, and nature on our increasingly urban planet? The Accidental Ecosystem is the first book to explain this phenomenon from a deep historical perspective, and its focus includes a broad range of species and cities. Cities covered include New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Pittsburgh, Austin, Miami, Chicago, Seattle, San Diego, Atlanta, Philadelphia, and Baltimore. Digging into the natural history of cities and unpacking our conception of what it means to be wild, this book provides fascinating context for why animals are thriving more in cities than outside of them. Author Peter S. Alagona argues that the proliferation of animals in cities is largely the unintended result of human decisions that were made for reasons having little to do with the wild creatures themselves. Considering what it means to live in diverse, multispecies communities and exploring how human and nonhuman members of communities might thrive together, Alagona goes beyond the tension between those who embrace the surge in urban wildlife and those who think of animals as invasive or as public safety hazards. The Accidental Ecosystem calls on readers to reimagine interspecies coexistence in shared habitats, as well as policies that are based on just, humane, and sustainable approaches.
