Critical analysis and evaluation of strategies adopted by world class financial institutions (2006) by Nicole Burkardt Pdf

Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject Business economics - Operations Research, grade: A (73%), University of Sunderland, language: English, abstract: The world today is changing faster than ever before. Technological developments, financial constraints, expanding markets, mergers and acquisitions, new government legislation are all putting pressure on organisations to change and stay dynamic (Davenport and Short, 1990; Aijo et al., 1996). It is argued that organisations have to pay attention to environmental changes in order to survive in the market (Fahey and Narayanan, 1986). Especially the financial sector is driven by two key environmental features; global deregulation of the sector and global decline in cost and technological changes such as the use of electronic media for service provisions and greater use of the Internet for banking transactions (Grosse, 2004). Corporate Strategy is the cornerstone of the success or failure of a company. It gives direction to corporate values, goals, mission and culture. This paper defines the core competencies and dynamic capabilities of four of the leading financial institutions (for a company brief refer to Appendix A, SWOT analysis Appendix B) as well as the importance of corporate governance. Furthermore based on the information gathered it will be discussed what key challenges Citibank and Deutsche Bank are facing, the significance of these challenges and how they might be overcome. Finally, strategic implementations are suggested.

Building World-Class Universities by Qi Wang,Ying Cheng,Nian Cai Liu Pdf

Within higher education, world-class universities are commonly regarded as elite research universities and play a critical role in developing a nation’s competitiveness in the global knowledge economy. An increasing number of countries, regions and higher education institutions in different parts of the world have joined the same battle for academic excellence. While emerging countries and their universities make every effort to enhance their capacity and boost their research performance, the academic superpowers endeavour to maintain - if not further improve- their global positions. “Building World-Class Universities: Different Approaches to a Shared Goal” intends to provide an in-depth picture of different approaches in pursuit of the shared goal of developing academic excellence, and to reflect the current trends in this field. Divided into three parts, the book covers: • building world-class universities from a national/regional perspective, • managing world-class universities from an institutional perspective, and • measuring world-class universities from a ranking/indicator perspective. This book not only represents a contribution to the ongoing discussion on the topic of building world-class universities, but can be seen as a continuation of the previous three volumes on this topic - “World-Class Universities and Ranking: Aiming beyond Status”, “The World-Class University as Part of a New Higher Education Paradigm: From Institutional Qualities to Systemic Excellence”, and “Paths to a World-Class University: Lessons from Practices and Experiences”. All four books will be useful readings for students and academics in higher education generally, in addition to policy makers and informed practioners.d practitioners

Report on the International Strategy of Deutsche Bank Group by Artur Gleyberman Pdf

Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 55%, Nottingham Trent University, language: English, abstract: This report critically evaluates Deutsche Banks' (DB) international strategy and business environment, concentrating on DB's universal bank strategy inside the European region. DB's international business environment is analysed through the application of PEST Analysis and Porters 5 Forces frameworks. Analysis of DB's international strategy includes evaluation of DB's strategic positioning and orientation, entry strategy and finally measuring strategic performance. The latter is achieved by applying the Balance Scorecard Concept together with the features of SWOT Analysis, finally resulting in several recommendations for improvement of DB's international operations. The applied business theories and concepts are critically examined in the course of their adoption. The major finding of the report is that although the highly competitive industrial environment and global financial crisis, DB's strategic management has: achieved good results in positioning DB as a leader in universal banking in Europe as well as around the world; low efficiency and low profitability relative to its main competitors; suffered high share value losses due to the financial crisis as well as its own failures in risk management, but remained stable and credible backed by its strong global franchise. Given that, DB has a strong potential to learn from the crisis, improve its former failures and come out stronger from this crisis.

Alternative Paths to Public Financial Management and Public Sector Reform by Sokbunthoeun So,Michael Woolcock,Leah April,Caroline Hughes Pdf

Reforming public-sector organizations--their structures, policies, processes and practices--is notoriously difficult, in rich and poor countries alike. Even in the most favorable of circumstances, the scale and complexity of the tasks to be undertaken are enormous, requiring levels of coordination and collaboration that may be without precedent for those involved. Entirely new skills may need to be acquired by tens of thousands of people. Compounding these logistical challenges is the pervasive reality that circumstances often are not favorable to large-scale reform. Whether a country is rich or poor, the choice is not whether, but how, to reform the public sector--how optimal design characteristics, robust political support, and enhanced organizational capability to implement and adapt will be forged over time. This edited volume helps address the “how†? question. It brings together reform experiences in public financial management and the public sector more broadly from eight country cases in East Asia: Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Malaysia, Myanmar, Papua New Guinea, Thailand, and Vietnam. These countries are at different stages of reform; most of the reform efforts would qualify as successes, while some had mixed outcomes, and others could be considered failures. The focus of each chapter is less on formally demonstrating success (or not) of specific reform, but on documenting how reformers maneuvered within different country contexts to achieve specific outcomes. Despite the great difficulty in reforming the public sector, decision-makers can draw renewed energy and inspiration, learning from those countries, sectors, and subnational spaces where substantive (not merely cosmetic) change has been achieved, and they can identify what pitfalls to avoid.

Rebuilding the Education Sector in East Timor during UNTAET by Trina Supit Pdf

This original volume examines the collaboration between East Timorese and international staff in the rebuilding of the education sector during the United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET) 1999-2002. Using interviews, contemporary newspaper articles and reports from UN sources and the World Bank, the book enables a comprehensive analysis of Timorese agency. Examining choices made by the Timorese and drawing comparison with other former Portuguese colonies, the text considers the power of the Timorese elite, the role of nepotism and corruption, the preservation of the Indonesian curriculum and the selection of Portuguese as the medium of instruction and official language - together with Tetum. Concluding with a contemporary discussion on the educational achievements for East Timorese children during UNTAET compared with those of today, Rebuilding the Education Sector in East Timor during UNTAET will be of interest to academics, researchers and post-graduate students in the fields of post-conflict studies, post-colonial education and language policy as well as East Timor more specifically. This book will also benefit graduate students and scholars in teacher education. Trina Supit completed her PhD at the University of Sydney, Australia. She was a member of the UNTAET Division of Education.
