L'auteur présente un bilan critique des théories de la croissance qui ont vu le jour au cours du XXe siècle. Il distingue deux approches. La première voit dans la croissance un processus d'augmentation identique des différentes branches de l'activité économique, processus dans lequel le taux de croissance de la population constitue une référence majeure. La théorie néoclassique de la croissance en constitue l'exemple-type et les récentes théories de la croissance endogène ne s'en démarquent qu'en partie. La seconde approche montre que la croissance des différentes branches n'est identique qu'à de très rares moment. Depuis l'aube de la révolution industrielle, la croissance économique résulte d'un processus cumulatif d'interaction entre branches, dont la force motrice est progressivement devenue le progrès technique, fondé sur la science et incorporé dans l'équipement physique. Le parti pris par l'auteur est de restituer à cette seconde approche la place qu'elle n'aurait jamais dû perdre, car elle constitue en fait le préalable de la première.
