Pendant quatre ans, des acteurs villageois, des animateurs d'un projet de développement en milieu paysan, des étudiants et des universitaires nigériens et belges,ont participé à un projet de croisement des savoirs: «Consolider la relation entre recherche universitaire et opérations de développement en renforçant les synergies entre savoirs scientifiques et savoirs paysans».Ce livre reflète le contenu de ce croisement des savoirs dans une région située au Centre Sud du Niger: la région d'Aguié, zone rurale transfrontalière avec le Nigeria. Il présente le point de vue des acteurs de ce projet pour qui l’écriture est un moyen ou le moyen privilégié d’expression de la pensée. Il se veut centré sur l’expérience et sur les interrogations posées par cet échange de savoirs entre acteurs.La première partie du livre est basée sur l’interaction entre le projet de développement rural d’Aguié et les acteurs villageois et universitaires. Ecrite principalement par les techniciens du projet, elle soulève les questions de la participation paysanne (et en particulier de la participation des femmes), des outils diagnostics et de valorisation de ce croisement des savoirs tant au niveau du projet lui-même que des villages. Se dessinent ici les modes de réappropriation par les acteurs locaux de cet échange de savoirs.La seconde partie est basée sur l’articulation entre formation et recherche de terrain. Comment introduire dans la pédagogie universitaire de nouvelles pratiques rendant compte des savoirs populaires? C’est ce défi qu’ont tenté de relever des enseignants universitaires nigériens et belges dans le cadre de leur formation de troisième cycle et dans le suivi des mémoires. Une méthodologie de travail de terrain à Kinshasa éclaire cette démarche du point de vue d’une doctorante.Enfin, dans la troisième partie, les auteurs s’interrogent sur la relation entre savoir et action, la compréhension des concepts de changement et de développement, la relation entre savoir et connaissance, et la notion d’identité réflexive du point de vue de l’Occident et de l’Afrique.

Far from the vision of popular actors in the popular economy as reactionary and archaic, stubbornly resisting any move towards change, this book's overall aim is to contribute to a broadening and deepening of our understanding of the logic and socio-economic practices of those operating in the informal economy. It focuses on the vulnerabilities of these participants, resulting from high exposure to different risks combined with low social protection, and on the interactions between vulnerability and poverty. It considers security of livelihoods as the guiding principle for multiple practices in the informal economy. Thirteen studies, based on careful analyses of empirical data in different contexts in Africa, Latin America, and Asia, contribute to this multidisciplinary discussion. This book describes how people develop their own strategies to solve their problems through the use of interpersonal networks, associations, and other community-based arrangements. Moreover, it shows that informal economy actors systematically reposition themselves vis-à-vis the State, markets, international, and national policies with the aim of enhancing their economic and social security, and they may do this either individually or collectively. The book emphasizes how adaptability of the informal economy can be influenced by such factors as the macroeconomic context, access to financial, technological, and information resources, infrastructure, social protection schemes, and the institutional environment within which adaptations occur. Case studies stress the need to reformulate questions relating to policy intervention based on a more thorough understanding of the perspective of informal economy actors.

This book examines the historical ramifications of the concept of exoticism through a literary analysis of Histoire générale des Antilles (1654/1667-71) written by Dominican missionary Jean-Baptiste Du Tertre. The study gives a thorough account of the early French colonization of the islands and the ways in which this violent process of cultural encounters was represented. It argues for the necessity to reconfigure the notion of exoticism, both by revisiting contemporary theorization and by contextualizing it in regard to the history and aesthetics of the times. The study is thus both theoretical, in proceeding by a critical reading of different orientations of exoticism, and historical in offering an in-depth study of an author and a period that have received little attention despite their impact on French Caribbean literature and on the history of anthropology.
