Crossing Mountains by Phyllis Ngai Pdf

Collaboration among contemporary Native American communities and local public schools is vital for nurturing Native languages. Although public schools cannot bear the entire burden, Native-language education will remain on the margins without their support. Using case studies of school districts on the Flathead Indian Reservation in Montana, Crossing Mountains provides important insights about integrating Native-language learning into public education. Phyllis Ngai argues that carefully designed and inclusive Native-language programs can benefit communities and students regardless of ethnic identity by providing for language-revitalization and promoting intercultural competence.

Just Passin' Thru by Winton Porter Pdf

Like a well-crafted stage play, Just Passin' Thru delivers one suspenseful scene after another. But in this historic setting — a store on the Appalachian Trail called Mountain Crossings — the characters who show up are no fictional creations. They are the real-life stars of the author’s new life as a backpack-purging, canteen-selling, hostel-running, bandage-taping, lost-child finding, argument-settling, romance-fixing, chili-making man of many faces. Like any good drama, there are the good guys (and gals) and the weirdos, too. Some show up once (and that’s enough), and some appear again and again. Some are friends, and some dangerous. But all are united by two things: the author’s story-capturing talent, and whatever it is that lures them to attempt (or conquer) a 2,200-mile path that climbs and plummets from Georgia to Maine.

The First Crossing of America by William Post Pdf

The first colony planted in North America was on Roanoke Island in 1597. The company who planted this colony promised to return the following year with supplies and more people. However England went to war that year and the supply ships were taken by the king to help in the war effort. It was over three years before the ships returned to Roanoke Island. When they arrived not a trace of the colony was found. No one has ever been able to find out what happened to them. This book, although not about the Roanoke Island colony, takes a similar colony near that area and takes them through the trials that people in America faced in that period of time. The story starts with Milford and Doris Kipling, who are linguists, being asked by the king to go with the new colony to teach its leadership the language of the natives. After they have complete this task they were to return with the ships. The Kipling couple took their sixteen year old son, John, with them. After they complete their task John asked to stay for the rest of the year promising to return the next year with the ships. Of course the ships didnt return and John faced the perils and catastrophes that led he and his companion across North America. The trek across America is just a part of Johns adventure. The reader will enjoy several other adventures and meet many interesting characters along the way.

Citizen Explorer by Jared Orsi Pdf

It was November 1806. The explorers had gone without food for one day, then two. Their leader, not yet thirty, drove on, determined to ascend the great mountain. Waist deep in snow, he reluctantly turned back. But Zebulon Pike had not been defeated. His name remained on the unclimbed peak-and new adventures lay ahead of him and his republic. In Citizen Explorer, historian Jared Orsi provides the first modern biography of this soldier and explorer, who rivaled contemporaries Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. Born in 1779, Pike joined the army and served in frontier posts in the Ohio River valley before embarking on a series of astonishing expeditions. He sought the headwaters of the Mississippi and later the sources of the Arkansas and Red Rivers, which led him to Pike's Peak and capture by Spanish forces. Along the way, he met Aaron Burr and General James Wilkinson; Auguste and Pierre Couteau, patriarchs of St. Louis's most powerful fur-trading family, who sought to make themselves indispensible to Jefferson's administration; as well as British fur-traders, Native Americans, and officers of the Spanish empire, all of whom resisted the expansion of the United States. Through Pike's life, Orsi examines how American nationalism thinned as it stretched west, from the Jeffersonian idealism on the Atlantic to a practical, materialist sensibility on the frontier. Surveying and gathering data, Pike sought to incorporate these distant territories into the republic, to overlay the west with the American map grid; yet he became increasingly dependent for survival on people who had no attachment to the nation he served. He eventually died in that service, in a victorious battle in the War of 1812. Written from an environmental perspective, rich in cultural and political context, Citizen Explorer is a state-of-the-art biography of a remarkable man.

Sounds of Crossing by Alex E. Chávez Pdf

In Sounds of Crossing Alex E. Chávez explores the contemporary politics of Mexican migrant cultural expression manifest in the sounds and poetics of huapango arribeño, a musical genre originating from north-central Mexico. Following the resonance of huapango's improvisational performance within the lives of audiences, musicians, and himself—from New Year's festivities in the highlands of Guanajuato, Mexico, to backyard get-togethers along the back roads of central Texas—Chávez shows how Mexicans living on both sides of the border use expressive culture to construct meaningful communities amid the United States’ often vitriolic immigration politics. Through Chávez's writing, we gain an intimate look at the experience of migration and how huapango carries the voices of those in Mexico, those undertaking the dangerous trek across the border, and those living in the United States. Illuminating how huapango arribeño’s performance refigures the sociopolitical and economic terms of migration through aesthetic means, Chávez adds fresh and compelling insights into the ways transnational music-making is at the center of everyday Mexican migrant life.

Distributed by the University of Nebraska Press for Caxton Press The Lewis and Clark expedition had weathered much difficulty before it reached Idaho's Bitterroot Mountain Range but it was that severe and rugged obstacle that almost ended the expedition. If not for the aid of the Lemhi Shoshoni and the Nez Perce tribes of the region, it is unlikely Lewis and Clark would have reached their destination. This is that story, written for young readers.
