Crucial Instances by Edith Wharton Pdf

‘Crucial Instances’ was the second collection of Wharton’s short stories to be published. Of the seven, ‘Copy: A Dialogue’ is presented as a short play. This collection shows the breadth of Wharton’s abilities, with stories ranging from the ‘feelgood’ to a Gothic, supernatural outing. Shorter stories seemed to serve as a focus for Wharton and her writing is exceptionally precise and memorable when faced with these parameters. A great read for Wharton fans and those new to her work. Edith Wharton (1862 – 1937) was an American designer and novelist. Born in an era when the highest ambition a woman could aspire to was a good marriage, Wharton went on to become one of America’s most celebrated authors. During her career, she wrote over 40 books, using her wealthy upbringing to bring authenticity and detail to stories about the upper classes. She moved to France in 1923, where she continued to write until her death.

Crucial Instances Sanctuary (Classic Reprint) by Edith Wharton Pdf

Excerpt from Crucial Instances Sanctuary It was a narrow-browed face, sallow as a wax effigy, high-nosed and cautious-lidded, as though modelled by priestly hands; the lips weak and vain rather than cruel; a quibbling mouth that would have snapped at verbal errors like a lizard catching flies, but had never learned the shape of a round yes or no. One of the Duke's hands rested on the head of a dwarf, 'a siguian creature with pearl ear-rings and fantastic dress; the other turned the pages of a folio propped on a skull. Have you ever questioned the long shuttered front of an old Italian house that motionless mask smooth mute equivocal as the face of a priest behind which buzz the secrets of the confessional? Other houses declare the activities they shelter; they are the clear expressive cuticle of a life flowing close to the surface; but the old palace in its narrow street the villa on its cypress-hooded hill are as impenetrable as death.

Annotated Leading Copyright Cases in Major Asian Jurisdictions by Kung-Chung Liu Pdf

In this second volume of the Applied Research Center for Intellectual Assets and the Law in Asia (ARCIALA) series, thirty-seven eminent scholars and practitioners from Asia and the United States have come together to comprehensively assess leading copyright cases from eight major Asian jurisdictions (People’s Republic of China (PRC), India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Taiwan). This book contains thirty-six case reports that focus on six topics that reflect the current trends in Asian copyright law—namely, digital copyright, collective copyright (including the management of copyright and the interface between collecting societies and competition law), criminal copyright (with a discussion of criminal punishment for copyright infringement), limits to copyright (such as fair use and exhaustion), the relationship between copyright laws and other forms of protection, and choice of jurisdiction and applicable law in copyright litigation. Each case report deconstructs the legal background, facts, and rationale of the decision in a particular landmark case, and then discusses the commercial or industrial significance and application. Notably, this includes an analysis of The Hague Convention on Choice of Court Agreements and its adoption in Singapore, which is, to date, the only Asian country to have fully ratified it. Taken together, this volume presents a useful guide for copyright practitioners, professionals, lawyers, and judges alike in addition to acting as a primer for students and businessmen planning to enter Asia’s exciting world of copyright. It also serves as a handbook for policy makers, both within Asia and further afield.

The Language Grid by Toru Ishida Pdf

There is increasing interaction among communities with multiple languages, thus we need services that can effectively support multilingual communication. The Language Grid is an initiative to build an infrastructure that allows end users to create composite language services for intercultural collaboration. The aim is to support communities to create customized multilingual environments by using language services to overcome local language barriers. The stakeholders of the Language Grid are the language resource providers, the language service users, and the language grid operators who coordinate the former. This book includes 18 chapters in six parts that summarize various research results and associated development activities on the Language Grid. The chapters in Part I describe the framework of the Language Grid, i.e., service-oriented collective intelligence, used to bridge providers, users and operators. Two kinds of software are introduced, the service grid server software and the Language Grid Toolbox, and code for both is available via open source licenses. Part II describes technologies for service workflows that compose atomic language services. Part III reports on research work and activities relating to sharing and using language services. Part IV describes various applications of language services as applicable to intercultural collaboration. Part V contains reports on applying the Language Grid for translation activities, including localization of industrial documents and Wikipedia articles. Finally, Part VI illustrates how the Language Grid can be connected to other service grids, such as DFKI's Heart of Gold and smart classroom services in Tsinghua University in Beijing. The book will be valuable for researchers in artificial intelligence, natural language processing, services computing and human--computer interaction, particularly those who are interested in bridging technologies and user communities.

Multiple Instance Learning by Francisco Herrera,Sebastián Ventura,Rafael Bello,Chris Cornelis,Amelia Zafra,Dánel Sánchez-Tarragó,Sarah Vluymans Pdf

This book provides a general overview of multiple instance learning (MIL), defining the framework and covering the central paradigms. The authors discuss the most important algorithms for MIL such as classification, regression and clustering. With a focus on classification, a taxonomy is set and the most relevant proposals are specified. Efficient algorithms are developed to discover relevant information when working with uncertainty. Key representative applications are included. This book carries out a study of the key related fields of distance metrics and alternative hypothesis. Chapters examine new and developing aspects of MIL such as data reduction for multi-instance problems and imbalanced MIL data. Class imbalance for multi-instance problems is defined at the bag level, a type of representation that utilizes ambiguity due to the fact that bag labels are available, but the labels of the individual instances are not defined. Additionally, multiple instance multiple label learning is explored. This learning framework introduces flexibility and ambiguity in the object representation providing a natural formulation for representing complicated objects. Thus, an object is represented by a bag of instances and is allowed to have associated multiple class labels simultaneously. This book is suitable for developers and engineers working to apply MIL techniques to solve a variety of real-world problems. It is also useful for researchers or students seeking a thorough overview of MIL literature, methods, and tools.

Requests in Film Dialogue and Dubbing Translation by Vittorio Napoli Pdf

This volume is the first to give an account of speech act pragmatics and (im)politeness in film conversation and in dubbing translation, with a focus on requests. The scope of the book is twofold: on the one hand, it describes the pragmatic features of requests in English and Italian film dialogue, while, on the other, it reveals patterns and trends concerning their translation into dubbed Italian. The first part of the volume appeals to scholars in cross-cultural pragmatics and film conversation. Differences and similarities in requestive behaviour are investigated in a comparative perspective between the two film languages, while the pragmatic features typifying requests in film speech are analysed against features typifying requests in spontaneous conversation. The second section of the book will appeal to translation scholars, since it provides an insight into how the pragmatics and the (im)politeness of requests travel across languages in the translation process, thus contributing to the largely under-researched relationship between pragmatics and translation studies.

News Media and Hate Speech Promotion in Mediterranean Countries by Said Hung, Elias,Diaz, Julio Montero Pdf

Expressions of hate are words or actions that are discriminatory, hostile, or violent to a person or group for racial, sexual, ideological, ethnic, or identity reasons. Such expressions contribute to an environment of prejudice and intolerance towards those who are targeted. The spread of hate speech has been exacerbated by the growth of social media networks, and dissemination strategies (e.g., astroturfing) are becoming increasingly complex. Although there has been an exponential increase in the study of hate speech in recent years, most methods have focused on the English language, limiting research of the phenomenon in other languages such as Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese. It is crucial to understand the role played by digital media and journalism in the dissemination, detection, and control of hate speech from current digital scenarios. News Media and Hate Speech Promotion in Mediterranean Countries provides relevant theoretical frameworks and the latest empirical research findings about hate speech studies including into prejudice and intolerance. Covering topics such as detecting hate speech, linguistic challenges, and the taxonomy of hate speech, this book is ideal for political decision makers, third-sector representatives, journalists, digital media professionals, and researchers.
