Cunning Machines by Jędrzej Osiński Pdf

There are many myths and mistakes which make the topics of artificial intelligence complex and confusing. But the truth is that the foundations of AI are not rocket science. People do not need a PhD to understand how a basic neural network works. In fact, one does not even need computer skills to learn this. Cunning Machines: Your Pocket Guide to the World of Artificial Intelligence explains the main concepts: what does AI really mean, where do we find it, how do scientists try to evaluate it, what are its main limitations and what future we can expect with it? It also describes the most popular AI techniques in an easy-to-digest form: Artificial neural networks Genetic algorithms The Monte Carlo method Natural language processing Ontologies and their applications This book is for everyone. Still, it may be especially valuable to teachers who wish to enrich their classes with some interesting and popular topics, sales managers and business analysts who wish to better understand the IT world, and finally politicians and journalists who take part in debates on the latest technologies. Jędrzej Osiński earned a PhD in artificial intelligence, has worked on government grants and has published 14 scientific papers to date. He is also the co-author of two books. At the same time, he has over ten years of experience working in IT companies of different sizes, domains (the web, telecoms, banking, e-learning), organisation structures and locations (Poland, Ireland and the UK). He is also involved in various initiatives promoting AI, science and modern technologies including blog posts, invited talks and TV and radio appearances

Rhetorical Machines by John Jones,Lavinia Hirsu Pdf

A landmark volume that explores the interconnected nature of technologies and rhetorical practice Rhetorical Machines addresses new approaches to studying computational processes within the growing field of digital rhetoric. While computational code is often seen as value-neutral and mechanical, this volume explores the underlying, and often unexamined, modes of persuasion this code engages. In so doing, it argues that computation is in fact rife with the values of those who create it and thus has powerful ethical and moral implications. From Socrates’s critique of writing in Plato’s Phaedrus to emerging new media and internet culture, the scholars assembled here provide insight into how computation and rhetoric work together to produce social and cultural effects. This multidisciplinary volume features contributions from scholar-practitioners across the fields of rhetoric, computer science, and writing studies. It is divided into four main sections: “Emergent Machines” examines how technologies and algorithms are framed and entangled in rhetorical processes, “Operational Codes” explores how computational processes are used to achieve rhetorical ends, “Ethical Decisions and Moral Protocols” considers the ethical implications involved in designing software and that software’s impact on computational culture, and the final section includes two scholars’ responses to the preceding chapters. Three of the sections are prefaced by brief conversations with chatbots (autonomous computational agents) addressing some of the primary questions raised in each section. At the heart of these essays is a call for emerging and established scholars in a vast array of fields to reach interdisciplinary understandings of human-machine interactions. This innovative work will be valuable to scholars and students in a variety of disciplines, including but not limited to rhetoric, computer science, writing studies, and the digital humanities.

Ionia by Alexander Craig Pdf

Ionia: Land of Wise Men and Fair Women (1898) is a utopian novel by Alexander Craig. Published with illustrations by renowned German American artist J. C. Leyendecker, Ionia: Land of Wise Men and Fair Women is Craig’s only known novel. Noted for its blend of science fiction and political theory, Craig’s work is among the many novels of the late-nineteenth century to predict the future of air travel. Unlike other utopian tales of the time, however, the author’s vision of a perfect society is built on conservative values. It is also notable for its depiction of severe punishment and overall anti-Semitism. When London banker David Musgrave dies, he leaves his wife and young son a sizable fortune. While raising Alexander, Musgrave’s widow devoted herself to philanthropy in their village. Now a young man forging his own path in London, he learns of a newly discovered country in the Himalayas. Alongside his friend Jason Delphion, he travels by aircraft across the world to see Ionia for himself. There, he learns that the people of the valley descended from Greek mercenaries who fled to the Himalayas during the conquest of Persia by Alexander the Great. Isolated, they lived for centuries as farmers and soldiers until, returning from Europe, a prince brought knowledge of modern technology back to Ionia. From then on, their society flourished, surpassing by far any other in human history. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Alexander Craig’s Ionia: Land of Wise Men and Fair Women is a classic work of utopian literature reimagined for modern readers.

The Meaning of the Russian Revolution by Leo Tolstoy Pdf

"The Meaning of the Russian Revolution" is a novel by Nobel Prize winning and highly-acclaimed Russian author Leo Tolstoy. In describing the 1905 Russian Revolution Tolstoy traces back the history of Europe as a whole and Russia in particular. He suggests that the nation has come full circle and that the people who had earlier submitted themselves to monarchical rule now find themselves burdened with its excesses and corruption. He however advocates for non-violent revolution as the means to bring about a new Russian society.
