Current Understanding and New Techniques in Refractive Surgery by Michael OKeefe Pdf

In this book, we examine the current techniques of refractive surgery, and lesser-known areas, and we describe some of the newer techniques. Our intention is to reinforce our understanding of the basic areas of LASEK, LASIK, dry eye, topography and aberrations. We have added new and controversial areas of research such as refractive surgery to patients with strabismus and paediatric refractive surgery and have highlighted the current understanding of ectasia and its management. Although refractive surgery is popular with up to a 20 year follow up, little is known about the risk of recurring refractive errors. We discuss this in detail and give our own follow-up outcomes. Many regard the frontier as presbyopia, but as it is a moving target, we still lack the information to decide whether the future will be cornea or lens. We discuss the current corneal techniques such as Inlays and Supracor, their advantages and disadvantages. Our target readers are ophthalmologists in training as well as those who practice refractive surgery.

Current Concepts in Refractive Surgery by Jeewan S Titiyal,Manpreet Kaur,Sridevi Nair Pdf

Refractive surgery is eye surgery to improve the refractive state of the eye and reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses. The most common type of refractive surgery uses lasers to reshape the curvature of the cornea. This book is a practical guide to the latest advances in refractive surgery procedures. Beginning with an introduction to the evolution of refractive surgery, the next section discusses pre-operative workup, patient evaluation, and decision making. The following sections cover different refractive procedures including corneal ablative, refractive lenticule extraction, lens-based surgeries, enhancements and retreatments, and presbyopia (a condition associated with aging). The final section covers a selection of miscellaneous topics such as bioptics, collagen cross-linking, intracorneal ring segments, incisional surgery, and challenging scenarios. Each section is highly illustrated and provides in depth detail on machines and laser platforms, surgical techniques, outcomes, and potential complications and their management. Key points Practical guide to latest advances in refractive surgery Covers numerous different procedures In depth detail on techniques, outcomes, equipment and complications Highly illustrated with clinical photographs and figures

Refractive Eye Surgery, Second Edition is a comprehensive text on the history, evolution, and current status of refractive eye surgery, written entirely by one author, a pioneer in the field. Surgical methods and patient workup are included in separate chapters describing each surgical technique. Among the surgeries described are lamellar, laser, and intraocular refractive surgery, radial keratotomy, surgery for astigmatism, and scleral shortening. The book discusses complications, shortcomings of techniques, and results of surgery. Extensive color illustrations describing the techniques, as well as the optical properties of the cornea and its surface topography make this a valuable surgical atlas. Methods of measuring and analyzing the corneal surface, the derivation of the corneal shape factor, and basic topics such as ametropia, myopia, and astigmatism are also covered.

Practical Astigmatism by Noel Alpins Pdf

The surgical correction of astigmatism is the last frontier to optimizing visual outcomes for patients. Practical Astigmatism: Planning and Analysis is a comprehensive guide to correcting astigmatism from pre-operative planning to post-operative analysis. This provides readers with unique insight to what actually happened surgically: did the astigmatism over or under correct? Was it on-axis or off-axis? With this book, ophthalmologists will be able to analyze previous procedures with the appropriate nomograms and more often achieve targeted outcomes. Dr. Noel Alpins has developed the Alpins Method of astigmatism to provide accurate planning and analysis of astigmatism procedures. His method focuses on analyzing refractive and corneal astigmatism parameters and using the results in future surgery to improve visual outcomes. The importance of the ocular residual astigmatism (ORA) is detailed when planning astigmatism surgery. Practical Astigmatism features vector planning for refractive laser surgery as well as planning and analysis applied to cataract and limbal relaxing incisions, , in addition to demonstrating graphical analysis of astigmatism using high quality vector and fan diagrams, as used in scientific journals. In addition, hemidivisional analysis of the irregular cornea, corneal coupling in incisional and excimer laser surgery for mixed astigmatism and toric IOL planning with total corneal power using corneal topographic astigmatism (CorT total) are addressed as well. Some Questions Answered Inside: What is the difference between regular and irregular astigmatism? How do I diagnose each, and how does this affect my surgical technique? Can I incorporate corneal astigmatism when performing excimer laser surgery? Why are my LRIs undercorrecting the astigmatism? Is it safe to perform excimer laser on keratoconous patients? Which corneal astigmatism measure do I choose and what do I do following a refractive surprise? Practical Astigmatism: Planning and Analysis will help ophthalmologists, optometrists, and technicians alike address each patient’s unique circumstances and act as your in-depth guide to correcting astigmatism. Testimonials... “For more than three decades I have been listening to, arguing with, and admiring the work of Dr. Noel Alpins in the field of astigmatism. Despite his remote location on the small island of Australia, his knowledge of astigmatism is at the peak of Mt. Everest. There are few others who have devoted their careers to understanding and managing astigmatism for which the world of ophthalmology is truly grateful.” - Robert H. Osher, MD “Noel is an original thinker who took on and conquered the complexities of astigmatism analysis, publishing the seminal papers on the way. His work has formed the cornerstone from which our current understanding and management of astigmatism has been built. He is someone from whom we have all learnt a great deal and this book is a testament to this.” - Dan Z Reinstein, MD MA(Cantab) FRCSC DABO FRCOphth FEBO

Cataract and Refractive Surgery by Thomas Kohnen (Dr. med.),Douglas D. Koch Pdf

The topic of the second volume of the series in "Essentials in Ophthalmology" is cataract and refractive surgery, a realm of ophthalmic care that has undergone revolutionary changes in the past 10 years. Worldwide, the removal of the opaque crystalline lens is the most frequently performed surgical intervention in the human body, and refractive surgery encompasses an increasing array of procedures with rapidly growing surgical volumes. The goal of the editors of this book has been to provide up-to-date clinically relevant overviews and to highlight the most interesting fields of research and controversy. The first half of the book focuses on new cataract surgical techniques and devices, including topical anaesthesia, small incision cataract surgery, modern intraocular lenses and ophthalmic viscosurgical devices. Special attention is devoted to difficult situations, such as mature, uveitic and pediatric cataracts, and to the prevention and management of complications. The second half of the book describes current and evolving modalities - both corneal and lenticular - to correct human refractive errors. Particular emphasis is placed on topics related to quality of vision, such as wavefront technology, measuring quality of vision, and issues in pupil measurement. Many of these topics pertain also to cataract surgery, indicating the merging of technologies that is occurring in these two major ophthalmic subspecialties.

Refractive Surgery for High Myopia by J. Bradley Randleman Pdf

The incidence and prevalence of high myopia has increased significantly over the past decade and is expected to more than double over the next 20 years. These patients are more impacted by their vision than patients with lower refractive errors, and also have more limited safe and effective treatment options available to them. Fortunately, recent developments in the field have improved refractive surgery screening to improve safety, and new surgical options are now available specifically to address these more complex refractive errors. The book will address the unique challenges presented by patients with high myopia and cover the pros and cons of current treatment options. The book will also feature case studies, with detailed images and tables. In addition, the book will discuss promising future options currently in development. Refractive Surgery for High Myopia is a must-have resource for ophthalmologists, refractive surgeons, residents, and fellows.
