Curriculum Evaluation In Malaysia: Aspirations And Realities by Vincent Pang Pdf

Curriculum Evaluation In Malaysia: Aspirations And Realities Curriculum evaluation is among the popular areas of research in education in Malaysia. This inaugural lecture book aims to compare the aspirations and realities of curriculum evaluation in the country. The aspirations are based on concepts and purposes of curriculum evaluation and guidelines provided by some popular curriculum evaluation models. On the other hand, the realities of curriculum evaluation in Malaysia are presented based on a review of 50 randomly sampled reports of curriculum evaluation. The review resulted in a summary of the current state of curriculum evaluation practices in Malaysia. The comparison of the aspirations and realities of the curriculum evaluation practices found a diversity of approaches and methods used; all studies have evaluative features; most of the evaluation findings are for specific implications to the programme evaluated; the terms ‘curriculum evaluation’, ‘programme evaluation’, and ‘curriculum research’ are used interchangeably; less than half of the reports did not involve the use of an evaluation model; a large proportion of curriculum evaluation in higher education projects focused on outcome-based education and entrepreneurship educati on; and only a handful of the evaluation projects were conducted by decision and policy makers at ministerial level. In the light of these findings, implications to policy makers and curriculum practitioners are discussed.

Social Studies Education in South and South East Asian Contexts by Kerry J Kennedy Pdf

The education of young people is context bound. This edited volume explores the contexts that characterise South and South East Asia and their influence on social studies education. There is not a single context across this broad geographical expanse, rather different religions, different political systems and different values exert influences that create distinctive programmes that characterise different countries. Yet there are also commonalities such as the post-colonial nature of most of the countries portrayed in this book, determined efforts at establishing new national communities and multiple value systems that lead to distinctive local priorities. There are also voices of resistance in these chapters, recognising the realities of local contexts but also recognising the need for change. Social studies education in these contexts may well be descended from its origins in North America, but in South and South Asian contexts, it has taken on new purposes, new forms and new values. Education researchers, policymakers and postgraduate students in comparative education will find the volume useful in its exploration and comparison of the social studies curricular and reforms that shaped them.

Workforce Development and Skill Formation in Asia by John Benson,Howard Gospel,Ying Zhu Pdf

Asia has undergone rapid transformation over the past several decades as many countries have embraced new technologies and the processes of globalisation. Over this period the inflow of foreign capital into the region, the level of trade amongst these countries, and trade with other parts of the world has increased substantially. The ensuing economic growth has led to some significant changes in labour markets and the demand for skilled employees and their deployment within organisations. Focusing on a number of developed and developing Asian economies, this book explores the dynamics of workforce development and skill formation, and considers questions of both skills shortages and skills gaps. The book assesses the current state of training in the selected Asian economies, the weaknesses and strengths of their various training approaches, and what the present state of training means for the future economic development of these economies.

Biographies and Careers throughout Academic Life by Jesús F Galaz-Fontes,Akira Arimoto,Ulrich Teichler,John Brennan Pdf

The book draws on the 2007 Changing Academic Profession international survey in order to document the personal characteristics, career trajectories, sense of identity/commitment and job satisfaction of academics in 14 countries with different levels of economic and social development and different higher education systems. With nearly 26,000 academics surveyed in 19 countries (of which 14 are reporting their results in this volume), the empirical basis of the book is the most up-to-date and far-reaching in the area. With major changes taking place both in the local and global contexts of higher education and in the working conditions within individual universities, as exemplified by increasing managerialism and performance-based funding, it is important to consider the impact of these changes on the profiles and working lives of the academic profession across different countries. But it is also important to look at the ways in which the faculty’s changing profile impacts on the organisation and management of universities and on the delivery of their central functions. Although not always obvious in the short-term, academic work and its conditions attract, incorporate and promote different types of individuals who, in turn, exert considerable influence on the nature of academic work, higher education institutions and, potentially, society. As faculty members are central to the teaching, research and service enterprise activities of higher education, it is important to understand their personal characteristics, career trajectories, sense of identity and commitment, and job satisfaction. These are central for understanding the academic profession in general and, in particular, the factors affecting their involvement and productivity in the work of their institutions. These are a complex result of a mixture of contextual factors (e.g. the status and regulatory framework of the higher education system, the features and atmosphere of the particular institution) and personal factors (e.g. gender, educational attainment, family background, attitudes to work and broader social values). This book examines the different situations facing the academic profession in individual countries and provides comparative studies of country differences.
