Excerpt from Daniel Boone: And the Hunters of Kentucky Interwoven with the history of the entrance of the Great West into the family of civilized nations, is the career of Daniel Boone. It has been the object of the compiler of this volume to present the narrative of that career in fidelity, and in such light as would rescue the memory of this great man from the common judgment passed upon him, of being only an Indian fighter and a bold hunter. To Daniel Boone, the Great Pioneer of the West - having ever a purpose and a destiny before him - this volume invites the reader. The compiler has been greatly aided by the admirable work of Mr. Peck - so accurate and impartial - preserved in the collection of American Biographies by Jared Sparks; by McClung's Sketches of Western Adventure; by the excellent local Histories of Kentucky, collated with such industry and care by Mr. Lewis Collins; and by the admirable Address of Gov. Morehead, delivered at Boonesborough. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Daniel Boone was an American pioneer, explorer, woodsman, and frontiersman, whose frontier exploits made him one of the first folk heroes of the United States. Boone is most famous for his exploration and settlement of what is now Kentucky, which was then part of Virginia but on the other side of the mountains from the settled areas. As a young adult, Boone supplemented his farm income by hunting and trapping game, and selling their pelts in the fur market. Through this occupational interest, Boone first learned the easy routes to the area. Despite some resistance from American Indian tribes such as the Shawnee, in 1775, Boone blazed his Wilderness Road through the Cumberland Gap in the Appalachian Mountains from North Carolina and Tennessee into Kentucky. There, he founded the village of Boonesborough, Kentucky, one of the first American settlements west of the Appalachians. Before the end of the 18th century, more than 200,000 Americans migrated to Kentucky/Virginia by following the route marked by Boone. Boone was a militia officer during the Revolutionary War (1775–83), which, in Kentucky, was fought primarily between the American settlers and the British-aided Indians. Boone was captured by Shawnee warriors in 1778. He escaped and alerted Boonesborough that the Shawnees were planning an attack. Although heavily outnumbered, Americans repelled the Shawnee warriors in the Siege of Boonesborough. Boone was elected to the first of his three terms in the Virginia General Assembly, during the Revolutionary War, and fought in the Battle of Blue Licks in 1782. Blue Licks, a Shawnee victory over the Patriots, was one of the last battles of the Revolutionary War, coming after the main fighting ended in October 1781. Following the war, Boone worked as a surveyor and merchant, but fell deeply into debt through failed Kentucky land speculation.

"Boone fought with George Washington in the Braddock campaign, served with Jefferson in the Virginia House of Burgesses and led Abraham Lincoln's grandfather into Kentucky... Boone hated coonskin caps; he never wore one. He died without owning an acre of the precious land he discovered....He was taken prisoner by the Shawnee war chief..but he outwitted his captors, escaped and led the defense of Boonesborough in an epic battle. In fact, Boone did more than any man in America to settle and hold the state of Kentucky. Yet after the siege, Boone was hauled before a court-martial and charged with treason...Boone was emphatically cleared of the charges- which was the handiwork of one embittered, paranoid enemy. The Long Hunter, a realistic account of the most famous of America's early pioneers, adds new depth to the traditional portrait of Daniel Boone- both as a source of new information and as a highly readable re-creation of a neglected period in our history"--from jacket flaps.
