Danny, Who Fell in a Hole by Cary Fagan Pdf

Finalist for the 2014 Silver Birch Express Award Danny finds himself stranded at the bottom of a giant construction hole, armed with nothing but his school backpack, his wits — and the company of a poetry-spouting mole... Danny’s parents have always been a bit flaky, but this time they have gone too far. Now his mother wants to bake cheesecakes in the mountains, and his father wants to be an opera singer. That means Danny and his older brother will spend half the year in Banff (wherever that is) and half the year in New York City. Worst of all, in preparation for the big move, his parents have given away the family dog, Thwack. Furious with his family, Danny runs out of the house and keeps running — straight onto a construction site, where he ends up at the bottom of a very, very large hole. When it appears that help is not immediately forthcoming, he settles in for the short haul, like a subterranean Robinson Crusoe. Drawing on his ingenuity, he provides himself with shelter (garbage bag and paper clips), cereal (coffee creamer, rainwater, granola bars and a few rogue raisins found at the bottom of his backpack) and a washroom (a hole in a hole). He even does his homework! The only thing missing is a Man Friday. Who turns out to have a long, earth-covered snout, a taste for beetles, and no eyes to speak of. Oh, and he also talks. His name is Mole, and he is excellent company — until a snake appears, and Danny must be not only ingenious, but also brave, if he is going to save his new friend. Warriors of Fire by Tom Zambrano Pdf

Young firefighters were forced to become hardened veterans almost overnight when serving in New York City during the politically charged decades of the 1960's and 1970's. The day-to-day dangers we firefighters endured together produced the highest degree of bonding that one can imagine. As "family," we shared the love, and laughter, as well as the tears of each other's personal tragedies. This book also tells how we, as firefighters, shared in the anguish felt by the innocent victims and their families. Fighting accidental fires was a tough enough job, but the embattled firefighters of our city's ghettos had to put up with the politically motivated burnings of buildings on the campuses of some of New York City's most prestigious colleges and universities in the name of civil disobedience. Add to that the rapid expansion of the drug culture, the sexual revolution, the Vietnam War protests, and race riots, and you have a pretty good idea of what the New York City Fire Department was up against. "All I can say is Wow! I love reading and I usually go in for the lighter reads, but a friend recommended this book. It held my attention from beginning to end. I will not spoil it for others, you have to read this. It will make you cry and laugh! It will certainly give you a greater appreciation for firemen all over the country. The author of this book obviously loved his job as a firefighter, and his writing seems to come right from his heart. Thank God for all you firefighters out there." - Thomas R. Allocca from Naperville, Illinois USA (January 15th, 2004).

The Poop Diaries by Abby Ross Pdf

They come into our homes. They see us in our most fragile moments. Plumbers are a fixture in our lives. When a toilet clogs, a faucet leaks, or a sewer line plugs, we call those unsung heroes, desperately seeking help. They scoop out our poop and pull underwear, toothbrushes and cotton balls out of our toilets, doing whatever it takes to get the job done. On a late Wednesday evening, after my toilet clogged, I asked our plumber to share his top five “greatest hits.” The stories were so hilarious, I had to share them with the world. The Poop Diaries features true stories told by my plumber, and many other plumbers, about the most memorable service jobs they have worked on and most unique people they have helped. Whether it’s nudity, rats, fake vaginas, dildos, snakes, weapons and so much more, these plumbers have seen and smelled it all.

The Pipes Were Calling by David Flaherty Pdf

There are many books about war. There are books that describe the bravery and glories of war. Other books portray the warrior as an "anti-hero". The Pipes Were Calling: A Vietnam War Story is not either of these formula tales. The Pipes Were Calling tells the story of a boy, 18 year old and fresh from high school who is drafted and then sent to fight in Vietnam. He has no combat experience or Hollywood scriptwriters. To survive, he must quickly learn the rules of war. Danny Murphy learns these rules, experiences combat, endures the deaths of friends, and engages in the black humor of crises. We share his experiences as he goes from "newbie" to veteran, then finally to civilian. Danny's story is told with honesty and humor, hopefully leaving us with a clearer understanding of war.
