That Deadman Dance by Kim Scott Pdf

Throughout Bobby Wabalanginy's young life the ships have been arriving, bringing European settlers to the south coast of Western Australia, where Bobby's people, the Noongar people, have always lived. Bobby, smart, resourceful and eager to please, has befriended the settlers, joining them as they hunt whales, till the land, and work to establish their new colony. He is welcomed into a prosperous white family and eventually finds himself falling in love with the daughter, Christine. But slowly - by design and by hazard - things begin to change. Not everyone is so pleased with the progress of the white colonists. Livestock mysteriously starts to disappear, crops are destroyed, there are 'accidents' and injuries on both sides. As the Europeans impose ever-stricter rules and regulations in order to keep the peace, Bobby's Elders decide they must respond in kind, and Bobby is forced to take sides, inexorably drawn into a series of events that will for ever change the future of his country. That Deadman Dance is haunted by tragedy, as most stories of first contact between European and native peoples are. But through Bobby's life, this novel exuberantly explores a moment in time when things might have been different, when black and white lived together in amazement rather than fear of the other, and when the world suddenly seemed twice as large and twice as promising.

Dead Men's Watches by Hugh Hood Pdf

In this tenth book in Hugh Hood's highly acclaimed series, The New Age, two linked novellas explore the transforming powers of love. In the first novella Matthew Goderich discovers that his late Uncle Philip has had a secret and emotionally rewarding romantic life. In the second novella Matthew nurses his childhood friend, Adam, through a long, painful, and terminal AIDS-induced illness. Matthew, in the first novella, is the detached observer and dogged detective who comes to understand love; in the second, he finally becomes fully engaged with the emotion of loving as he rids himself of his homophobia and learns to appreciate and embrace Adam, his lifelong friend. Matthew's emotional awakening corresponds with society's growing awareness in the early 1980s of the nature and extent of the AIDS crisis. Dead Men's Watches continues Hugh Hood's vivid portrayal of Canadian social history and teaches us that the gift of love is all that matters in the end.

BRE-X: DEAD MAN?S STORY? by Alfred Lenarciak Pdf

Between 1994 and 1997, Canadian-based Bre-X Minerals sponsored and enthusiastically promoted listings on the TSX and NASDAQ by JPMorgan, Lehman, BMO, Scotia as well as others, who were exploring for gold on the Busang property on the Indonesian island of Borneo. Their efforts bore the discovery of a lifetime: a mammoth deposit speculated to contain over 200 million ounces of easily extractable gold. The company's stock exploded from 25 cents to $270, giving them a valuation of over $6 billion. Major mining companies like Barrick, Placer Dome and Freeport McMoran started competing to develop the largest gold deposit ever discovered. In early 1997, Suharto and his Indonesian government took control of the deposit, by force, and commissioned Freeport to build a mega mine. In the ensuing months, due diligence revealed that the deposit was a gigantic hoax! There was no gold in Busang. The principals of Bre-X were accused (but never convicted) of salting (adding gold) the samples before sending them to the labs. Michael de Guzman, a Filipino geologist who served as the project manager, infamously jumped from a helicopter into the abyss of Borneo's jungle. Minorca Resources of Toronto were the financial partners of the Haji Saykerani group of companies who owned Busang. Alfred Lenarciak was the chairman of Minorca at the time. In a strange twist of fate, in February of 2012, Alfred had a chance encounter in Rome, Italy with a man named Akiro Guzzo, who shared with him an amazing story on the life and death of Michael de Guzman: is this really a dead man's story?

Dead Man's Watch by Orville Burch Pdf

Dead Man's Watch, a paranormal mystery replete with ghosts, zombies, friendships, romance, and humor, takes place in the rural farmland of eastern Missouri. Some knowledge seems to race ahead of all that can be known. For Rachel Law that understanding was about the dead, and the undead. Although they were obsessed with her, it seemed the more she learned, the less she knew. This morning, as she turned her bookstore sign to open, she braced herself for more unknown, as she saw Wayne Grant approach. Some people thought that Rachel's exploits made her legendary in Franklin Furnace. Rachel knew that the real legend was about to enter her shop. Wayne, known locally as the town zombie, had died. Twenty-years-ago, on a dare, he climbed to the top of a high tension power line, and was electrocuted. The local doctor said it was the hitting of the ground as he fell that must have jolted his heart back from death. Rachel knew he wasn't really a zombie, although he looked like one. Still, she found herself hoping against hope that he was coming for a book to read and not a brain to eat. Turns out that he was coming for help. His own ghost, which escaped his body at the time of his death, was now haunting him. As Rachel tries to help Wayne, she learns that helping an undead is frowned upon in the spiritual world. Soon, Rachel is plagued by paranormal events that threaten her life and the lives of all those she loves.

The Civil War Papers of Lt. Colonel Newton T. Colby, New York Infantry by Newton T. Colby Pdf

When I woke the battle had begun ... the shells of the enemy flew over us here tearing great limbs off the trees and screaming horribly ... then a shell struck into the ranks near where I was, killing and wounding five or six--I saw them fall and heard their screams. But on we went and I know not who they were or what became of them--Lt. Col. Newton T. Colby, September 21, 1862. Lt. Col. Colby served with the 23rd New York, the 107th New York at Antietam, Chancellorsville and Harper's Ferry, and later in the Veteran Reserve Corps as superintendent of Old Capital Prison. This is a compilation of Colby's letters to family, friends and other military personnel, newspaper articles that detail the fighting in which Colby and his fellow soldiers were involved, and accounts of the fighting and daily life from other soldiers. Colby was not a well known name, but he crossed paths with many prominent figures of the Civil War, witnessed history being made, and was recognized as an excellent soldier by his peers and commanding officers.
