Forest Decline in the Atlantic and Pacific Region by Reinhard F. Huettl,Dieter Mueller-Dombois Pdf

Forest damage, forest decline, forest dieback - not related to biotic agents - is occurring in the Atlantic and Pacific regions. In Europe and Eastern North America this serious problem is considered to be, at least to some part, related to industrial air pollutants and their atmospheric conversion products, such as acid rain or ozone. Forest declines in the Pacific region have been attributed largely to natural causes involving forest dynamics, since air pollution and other negative anthropogenic influences are practically absent. Presented here are typical decline phenomena in the Pacific and Atlantic region, potential causes, effects and mitigation strategies, and the question whether there are any similarities on a functional or structural basis is addressed.

Forest Decline by Joshua A. Jenkins Pdf

This book present current research from across the globe in the study of the causes and impacts of forest decline. Topics discussed include the biotechnological approach to conservation of forest tree species; managing mangrove forest decline; ectomycorrhizas for forest resistance and resilience against factors of tree dieback; tree growth decline on relict Western-Mediterranean mountain forests; decline in the physical structure of deciduous hardwood forests due to deer grazing and drought and forest decline in the Iberian Peninsula.

The Dying of the Trees by Charles E. Little Pdf

From the sugarbush of Vermont and the dogwoods of Maryland to the hollows in Appalachia and the mountainsides of the West, a whole range of human-caused maladies--acid rain, ultraviolet rays, and other eco-hazards--has been the cause of major forest decline. Little explores the phenomenon with scientists and government officials, and recounts their respondes to this threat to global ecological balance.

Forest Decline and Ozone by Heinrich Sandermann,Alan R. Wellburn,Robert L. Heath Pdf

The idea for this book arose in 1993, after the Free State of Bavaria through its Bayrisches Staatsministerium rur Landesentwicklung und Umweltfragen (Bavarian Ministry of Regional Development and the Environment) decided to discontinue both the Bavarian project management (PBWU) for forest decline research and the multidisciplinary field research on the Wank Mountain in the Alps near Garmisch. Forest decline through the action of ozone and other photooxidants was a main topic of the supported re search in the Alps and will be a topic of new investigations in the Bavarian Forest. Many interesting results were obtained, but the researchers involved have not had sufficient time to allow reliable conclusions to be drawn. It was therefore decided to ask inter national experts for contributions in order to summarize the best available evidence of a possible link between ozone and forest decline - a topic which has been studied in the USA since the late 1950s and in Europe since the early 1980s. The original idea of Waldsterben as an irreversible large-scale dieback of forests in Germany was soon recognized to be wrong (Forschungsbeirat 1989). However, the new criteria used for the official German and European damage inventories (loss or yel lowing of needles or leaves, tree morphology) indicate that per sistently high percentages of damaged spruce and pine remain, and there is an increasing percentage of damaged beech and oak, with a high proportion of biotic disease (Forschungsbeirat 1989; UN-ECE 1995).

High Mountain Conservation in a Changing World by Jordi Catalan,Josep M Ninot,M. Mercè Aniz Pdf

This book provides case studies and general views of the main processes involved in the ecosystem shifts occurring in the high mountains and analyses the implications for nature conservation. Case studies from the Pyrenees are preponderant, with a comprehensive set of mountain ranges surrounded by highly populated lowland areas also being considered. The introductory and closing chapters will summarise the main challenges that nature conservation may face in mountain areas under the environmental shifting conditions. Further chapters put forward approaches from environmental geography, functional ecology, biogeography, and paleoenvironmental reconstructions. Organisms from microbes to large carnivores, and ecosystems from lakes to forest will be considered. This interdisciplinary book will appeal to researchers in mountain ecosystems, students and nature professionals. This book is open access under a CC BY license.

Forest Decline and Air Pollution by Ernst-Detlef Schulze,Otto L. Lange,Ram Oren Pdf

During the last decade, forest decline has become increasingly apparent. The decline in forest health was often reported to be associated with air pollution. The present study on Norway spruce stands in the Fichtelgebirge analyses various processes interacting within forest ecosystems. It covers transport and deposition of air pollutants, the direct effects of pollutants on above-ground plant parts, the responses of soil to acid rain, and the changing nutrient availability, and the accompanying effects on plant metabolism and growth. The role of fungi, microorganisms and soil animals in the decline of these stands is also assessed. The volume is concluded with a synthesis evaluation of the influence of different factors, and their interactions on forest decline.

Our Forests, Our Future by World Commission on Forests and Sustainable Development Pdf

Our forests currently face many crises, ranging from barren land in many developing countries, to die-back trees in polluted parts of Europe, to the less tangible consequences of forest decline for planetary stability. The issues require urgent attention. Our Forests, Our Future answers this need. Coverage advocates radical reform of policies, calls for new political leadership, more personal involvement from men and women throughout the world, and more science.

Forests and Society by Kristiina A. Vogt Pdf

This book, which contains 8 chapters, provides a framework for the general public, forest managers and policy makers to understand what factors need to be included when working towards using and protecting the world's forests so that they can be sustained. Topics covered include: historical perceptions and use of forests; the creation of today's forest landscapes by global societies; decision making related to forests becoming democratic and globalized; changing views about the ecology and conservation of forests; the historical and continuing impacts of human disturbances (i.e., air pollution, climatic change, salt injury, introduced plants, introduced insects, introduced pathogens, forest management activities and wars) on forests; the relevance of natural disturbances (i.e., wildfires, wind, extreme temperature and moisture, volcanic eruptions, pathogens, and insect and vertebrate pests) in maintaining sustainable forests; the relationship of human health to forest management; and the relationship among forests, humans and the carbon cycle. Case studies from Australia, Bolivia, Botswana, China, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Nepal, Peru, the Philippines, Puerto Rico and the USA, are also included.
