The Geological Deformation of Sediments by A Maltman Pdf

This book covers the theoretical principles, their application and results in all the geological environments where sediment deformation is now known to be important. It explains the basic ideas for a newcomer, but develops concepts and provides numerous up-to-date literature references for the advanced specialist. The emphasis is on employing a sound understanding of mechanical principles to analyze observed structures.

Sedimentary Rocks in the Field by Maurice E. Tucker Pdf

Sedimentary rocks are widely distributed at the Earth's surface and their accurate description is essential for interpretations of depositional environments and palaeo-geography. Designed to be used in the field, this book describes both techniques and approaches and discusses particular aspects including composition, texture, sedimentary structures and fossils.

Paleocurrents and Basin Analysis by P. E. Potter,F. J. Pettijohn Pdf

The study of paleocurrents, since 1963, is now a very routine part of sedimentology, and more and more such studies are finding use in other fields. Thus it seemed appropriate for us to review post-1963 developments and present them in a compact manner for the interested reader. Instead of rewriting a second edition, which thirteen years later we would organize in a completely dif ferent way, we have brought each chapter up to date with new material up to 1976. A new update supplement has in this edition been inserted after each one of the original chapters. We have stayed close to the original theme of paleocurrents-how to measure them and how to use them to solve geological problems ranging in scale from the hand specimen to the sedimentary basin and beyond. We have used many annotated references and tables to help pre sent this information to the reader. The reader will note that we have cited a few 1962 references - pUblications that appeared too late to be cited in the original 1963 edition. A few times we have also cited a reference which was included in the first edition. These are marked with an asterisk and hence do not appear in the new lists of references. We have been aided by many. In Cincinnati, WANDA OSBORNE and JEAN CARROL did typing and RICHARD SPOHN, the University's geological librarian, was very helpful in obtaining many references to the literature.

Sedimentary Structures by John David Collinson,Nigel Mountney,David B. Thompson Pdf

Sedimentary structures introduces undergraduate students to depositional and also post-depositional sedimentary processes in an structures across a wide range of scales can be interpreted in terms of those processes. Sedimentary structures produced by erosion, deposition and post-depositional change are all clearly explained and related to the processes that formed them. Hydrodynamic and aerodynamic controls on the development of sub-aqueous and aeolian bedforms are discussed, as are the styles of deformation to which sediments can be subjected after deposition.

This is a discount Black and white version. Some images may be unclear, please see BCCampus website for the digital version. This book was born out of a 2014 meeting of earth science educators representing most of the universities and colleges in British Columbia, and nurtured by a widely shared frustration that many students are not thriving in courses because textbooks have become too expensive for them to buy. But the real inspiration comes from a fascination for the spectacular geology of western Canada and the many decades that the author spent exploring this region along with colleagues, students, family, and friends. My goal has been to provide an accessible and comprehensive guide to the important topics of geology, richly illustrated with examples from western Canada. Although this text is intended to complement a typical first-year course in physical geology, its contents could be applied to numerous other related courses.

A Practical Guide to Rock Microstructure by Ron H. Vernon Pdf

Rock microstructures provide clues for the interpretation of rock history. A good understanding of the physical or structural relationships of minerals and rocks is essential for making the most of more detailed chemical and isotopic analyses of minerals. Ron Vernon discusses the basic processes responsible for the wide variety of microstructures in igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic and deformed rocks, using high-quality colour illustrations. He discusses potential complications of interpretation, emphasizing pitfalls, and focussing on the latest techniques and approaches. Opaque minerals (sulphides and oxides) are referred to where appropriate. The comprehensive list of relevant references will be useful for advanced students wishing to delve more deeply into problems of rock microstructure. Senior undergraduate and graduate students of mineralogy, petrology and structural geology will find this book essential reading, and it will also be of interest to students of materials science.

Sedimentology by Herve Chamley Pdf

Sedimentology is an easily readable textbook for undergraduate students, devoted to the main factors of sedimentation and to sedimentary environments. The basic vocabulary and the main processes are presented in a very attractive form. The presentation of sedimentary processes is illustrated by many examples. While most cases are related to present day sedimentation, a few applications to past sedimentary environments are also supplied for each considered topic.

Deformation of Glacial Materials by Alex Maltman,Bryn Hubbard,M. J. Hambrey,Geological Society of London Pdf

The flow of glacier ice can produce structures that are striking and beautiful. Associated sediments too can develop spectacular deformation structures, and examples are remarkably well preserved in Quaternary deposits. This collection of papers addresses how the methods for unravelling deformation structures evolved by structural geologists can be used for glacial materials, and the opportunities offered to structural geologists by glacial materials for studying deformation in rocks.
