Deformations of Spacetime Symmetries by Michele Arzano,Jerzy Kowalski-Glikman Pdf

This monograph provides an introduction to deformations of Poincaré symmetries focusing on models with a Lie group momentum space and associated non-commutative space-times. The emphasis is put on the emergence of such structures from quantum gravity, their mathematical features described in terms of Hopf algebras and applications to particle kinematics and field theory. Part I of this work focuses on the link between gravity and deformed symmetries in the case of 2+1 and 3+1 space-time dimensions. Part II is devoted to the description of classical particles with group valued momenta, their phase spaces and kinematics. The last part of these notes provides an introduction to the basic features of classical and quantum field theory on κ-Minkowski space-time, the prototypical example of non-commutative space-time exhibiting deformed Poincaré symmetry. The text, being the first providing a detailed overview of these topics, is primarily intended for researchers and graduate students interested in non-commutative field theories and quantum gravity phenomenology.

Mathematical Physics by S Rahvar,N Sadooghi,F Shojai Pdf

Since 1984, a series of regional conferences on mathematical physics has been organized by physicists from Iran, Pakistan and Turkey to promote the research in mathematical and theoretical physics in the region. This volume, which derives from the XI Regional Conference on Mathematical Physics, comprises 8 review and 44 research articles on the most significant topics in mathematical and theoretical physics such as astrophysics and cosmology, conformal field theory, high energy physics, general relativity and plasma physics. The review articles are comprehensive and self-contained and report on the most important developments in the corresponding subjects. Each review article provides a complete list of references, which is especially useful for graduate students who are just starting their research activities; even ambitious undergraduates in physics can use these review papers as useful background material to go further into the subject and explore the research literature. Stochastic Mechanics by Folkert Kuipers Pdf

Stochastic mechanics is a theory that holds great promise in resolving the mathematical and interpretational issues encountered in the canonical and path integral formulations of quantum theories. It provides an equivalent formulation of quantum theories, but substantiates it with a mathematically rigorous stochastic interpretation by means of a stochastic quantization prescription. The book builds on recent developments in this theory, and shows that quantum mechanics can be unified with the theory of Brownian motion in a single mathematical framework. Moreover, it discusses the extension of the theory to curved spacetime using second order geometry, and the induced Itô deformations of the spacetime symmetries. The book is self-contained and provides an extensive review of stochastic mechanics of the single spinless particle. The book builds up the theory on a step by step basis. It starts, in chapter 2, with a review of the classical particle subjected to scalar and vector potentials. In chapter 3, the theory is extended to the study of a Brownian motion in any potential, by the introduction of a Gaussian noise. In chapter 4, the Gaussian noise is complexified. The result is a complex diffusion theory that contains both Brownian motion and quantum mechanics as a special limit. In chapters 5, the theory is extended to relativistic diffusion theories. In chapter 6, the theory is further generalized to the context of pseudo-Riemannian geometry. Finally, in chapter 7, some interpretational aspects of the stochastic theory are discussed in more detail. The appendices concisely review relevant notions from probability theory, stochastic processes, stochastic calculus, stochastic differential geometry and stochastic variational calculus. The book is aimed at graduate students and researchers in theoretical physics and applied mathematics with an interest in the foundations of quantum theory and Brownian motion. The book can be used as reference material for courses on and further research in stochastic mechanics, stochastic quantization, diffusion theories on curved spacetimes and quantum gravity.

Deformed Spacetime by Fabio Cardone,Roberto Mignani Pdf

This volume provides a detailed discussion of the mathematical aspects and physical applications of a new geometrical structure of space-time, based on a generalization ("deformation") of the usual Minkowski space, as supposed to be endowed with a metric whose coefficients depend on the energy. This new five-dimensional scheme (Deformed Relativity in Five Dimensions, DR5) represents a true generalization of the usual Kaluza-Klein (KK) formalism.

Nonlinear, Deformed And Irreversible Quantum Systems - Proceedings Of The International Symposium On Mathematical Physics by Heinz-dietrich Doebner,P Nattermann,Vladimir K Dobrev Pdf

In recent years nonlinear and irreversible quantum mechanics is becoming increasingly important because of the availability of precision experiments. There are new and successful attempts to understand quantum irreversibility. The development of generalized symmetries has to led to new families of evolution equations for pure and mixed states. On the one hand, this timely symposium covers nonlinear and irreversible quantum mechanics, the theory of quantization methods, causality and various problems important in this context. On the other hand, it reports the development of quantum group symmetries, and of methods to construct deformed quantum mechanical evolution equations like the q-deformed Schrödinger equations.

Broken Symmetry in Curved Spacetime and Gravity by Charles D. Lane Pdf

This book contains several recent articles written about broken spacetime symmetry. The context is curved spacetime as used in General Relativity and the broken symmetry most discussed is Local Lorentz Symmetry. While there is currently no experimental evidence for broken Lorentz symmetry in nature, it is an object of great study from theoretical, phenomenological, and experimental perspectives. All three appear in this volume. There are three review articles in this volume: Fabian Kislat summarizes astrophysical probes of Lorentz violation, especially those using polarized light; Michael Seifert discusses a particular limit of the Standard-Model Extension that is useful for relating theoretical and experimental ideas; and Marco Schreck describes circumstances under which gravitational Cerenkov radiation could arise from Lorentz violation. The other three articles focus more on original research: Charles Lane and Quentin Bailey relate a particular theory of noncommutative geometry to the curved-spacetime Standard-Model Extension; Yuri Bonder and Christobal Corral consider the existence of spacetime symmetries in models with explicit Lorentz violation; and Pawel Gusin et al. study a spacetime transformation that relates the inside and outside of a nonrotating black hole.

Fundamental Problems in Quantum Physics by M. Ferrero,Alwyn van der Merwe Pdf

For many physicists quantum theory contains strong conceptual difficulties, while for others the apparent conclusions about the reality of our physical world and the ways in which we discover that reality remain philosophically unacceptable. This book focuses on recent theoretical and experimental developments in the foundations of quantum physics, including topics such as the puzzles and paradoxes which appear when general relativity and quantum mechanics are combined; the emergence of classical properties from quantum mechanics; stochastic electrodynamics; EPR experiments and Bell's Theorem; the consistent histories approach and the problem of datum uniqueness in quantum mechanics; non-local measurements and teleportation of quantum states; quantum non-demolition measurements in optics and matter wave properties observed by neutron, electron and atomic interferometry. Audience: This volume is intended for graduate students of physics and those interested in the foundations of quantum theory.

Quantum Symmetries - Proceedings Of The International Workshop On Mathematical Physics by Doebner Heinz-dietrich,Dobrev Vladimir K Pdf

Quantum symmetry modelled through quantum group or its dual, quantum algebra, is a very active field of relevant physical and mathematical research stimulated often by physical intuition and with promising physical applications. This volume gives some information on the progress of this field during the years after the quantum group workshop in Clausthal 1989. Quantum symmetry is connected with very different approaches and views. The field is not yet coherent; there are different notions of quantum groups and of quantum algebras through algebraic deformations of groups and algebras. Hence its development has various directions following more special mathematical and physical interests.

The Marcel Grossmann meetings were conceived to promote theoretical understanding in the fields of physics, mathematics, astronomy and astrophysics and to direct future technological, observational, and experimental efforts. They review recent developments in gravitation and general relativity, with major emphasis on mathematical foundations and physical predictions. Their main objective is to bring together scientists from diverse backgrounds and their range of topics is broad, from more abstract classical theory and quantum gravity and strings to more concrete relativistic astrophysics observations and modeling. This Tenth Marcel Grossmann Meeting was organized by an international committee composed of D Blair, Y Choquet-Bruhat, D Christodoulou, T Damour, J Ehlers, F Everitt, Fang Li Zhi, S Hawking, Y Ne'eman, R Ruffini (chair), H Sato, R Sunyaev, and S Weinberg and backed by an international coordinating committee of about 135 members from scientific institutions representing 54 countries. The scientific program included 29 morning plenary talks during 6 days, and 57 parallel sessions over five afternoons, during which roughly 500 papers were presented. These three volumes of the proceedings of MG10 give a broad view of all aspects of gravitation, from mathematical issues to recent observations and experiments.

Experimental Search for Quantum Gravity by Sabine Hossenfelder Pdf

This book summarizes recent developments in the research area of quantum gravity phenomenology. A series of short and nontechnical essays lays out the prospects of various experimental possibilities and their current status. Finding observational evidence for the quantization of space-time was long thought impossible. In the last decade however, new experimental design and technological advances have changed the research landscape and opened new perspectives on quantum gravity. Formerly dominated by purely theoretical constructions, quantum gravity now has a lively phenomenology to offer. From high precision measurements using macroscopic quantum oscillators to new analysis methods of the cosmic microwave background, no stone is being left unturned in the experimental search for quantum gravity. This book sheds new light on the connection of astroparticle physics with the quantum gravity problem. Gravitational waves and their detection are covered. It illustrates findings from the interconnection between general relativity, black holes and Planck stars. Finally, the return on investment in quantum-gravitation research is illuminated. The book is intended for graduate students and researchers entering the field.
