Elliptic, Hyperbolic and Mixed Complex Equations with Parabolic Degeneracy by Guo Chun Wen Pdf

In the fishing community of Fjallbacka, life is remote, peaceful, and for some, tragically short. Foul play was always suspected in the disappearance twenty years ago of two young campers, but their bodies were never found. But now, a young boy out playing has confirmed the grim truth. Their remains are discovered alongside those of a fresh victim, sending the tiny town into shock. Local detective Patrik Hedstrom, expecting a baby with his girlfriend Erica, can only imagine what it is like to lose a child. When a second young girl goes missing, Hedstrom's attention focuses on the Hults, a feuding clan of misfits, religious fanatics and criminals. The suspect list is long but time is short which of this family's dark secrets will provide the vital clue? Praise for The Ice Princess : The hottest crime genre of the moment is Nordic noir and Swedish writer Camilla Luckberg (who shares Stieg Larsson's translator) is one of the reasons. As with all Scandinavian murder mysteries, it's darker, bleaker, and the plot far more sinister than similar American fare. Larsson fans who give Luckberg's novel a chance to seduce them will be rewarded. USA Today At the start of Luckberg's haunting U.S. debut, biographer Erica Falck feels compelled to write a novel about why her beautiful friend Alex would kill herself. Luckberg skillfully details how horrific secrets are never completely buried and how silence can kill the soul." Publishers Weekly , starred review Camilla Luckberg has written seven blockbuster novels in her native Swedish but, until now, no one has published any of them in the United States. Now Pegasus Books has stepped forward.â¿ â¿¿ The New York Times Heart-stopping a masterclass in Scandinavian crime fiction." Val McDermid

The Role of Degenerate States in Chemistry, Volume 124 by Michael Baer,Gert Due Billing Pdf

Edited by Nobel Prize-winner Ilya Prigogine and renowned authority Stuart A. Rice, the Advances in Chemical Physics series provides a forum for critical, authoritative evaluations in every area of the discipline. In a format that encourages the expression of individual points of view, experts in the field present comprehensive analyses of subjects of interest. This stand-alone, special topics volume, edited by Gert D. Billing of the University of Copenhagen and Michael Baer of the Soreq Nuclear Research Center in Yavne, Israel, reports recent advances on the role of degenerate states in chemistry. Volume 124 collects innovative papers on "Complex States of Simple Molecular Systems," "Electron Nuclear Dynamics," "Conical Intersections and the Spin-Orbit Interaction," and many more related topics. Advances in Chemical Physics remains the premier venue for presentations of new findings in its field.

The Degenerate Muse by Robin G. Schulze Pdf

The early twentieth century marked a dramatic shift in the American conception of nature. This book analyzes the ways in which the scientific recasting of American nature as an antidote for degeneration influenced work of important modernist writers Harriet Monroe, Ezra Pound, and Marianne Moore.

Quantum Chemistry by Ajit Thakkar Pdf

This book provides non-specialists with a basic understanding ofthe underlying concepts of quantum chemistry. It is both a text for second or third-year undergraduates and a reference for researchers who need a quick introduction or refresher. All chemists and many biochemists, materials scientists, engineers, and physicists routinely user spectroscopic measurements and electronic structure computations in their work. The emphasis of Quantum Chemistry on explaining ideas rather than enumerating facts or presenting procedural details makes this an excellent foundation text/reference. The keystone is laid in the first two chapters which deal with molecular symmetry and the postulates of quantum mechanics, respectively. Symmetry is woven through the narrative of the next three chapters dealing with simple models of translational, rotational, and vibrational motion that underlie molecular spectroscopy and statistical thermodynamics. The next two chapters deal with the electronic structure of the hydrogen atom and hydrogen molecule ion, respectively. Having been armed with a basic knowledge of these prototypical systems, the reader is ready to learn, in the next chapter, the fundamental ideas used to deal with the complexities of many-electron atoms and molecules. These somewhat abstract ideas are illustrated with the venerable Huckel model of planar hydrocarbons in the penultimate chapter. The book concludes with an explanation of the bare minimum of technical choices that must be made to do meaningful electronic structure computations using quantum chemistry software packages.

Schubert Varieties and Degeneracy Loci by William Fulton,Piotr Pragacz Pdf

Schubert varieties and degeneracy loci have a long history in mathematics, starting from questions about loci of matrices with given ranks. These notes, from a summer school in Thurnau, aim to give an introduction to these topics, and to describe recent progress on these problems. There are interesting interactions with the algebra of symmetric functions and combinatorics, as well as the geometry of flag manifolds and intersection theory and algebraic geometry.

Extending the Scope of Construction Grammar by Ronny Boogaart,Timothy Colleman,Gijsbert Rutten Pdf

The field of constructionist linguistics is rapidly expanding, as research on a broad variety of language phenomena is increasingly informed by constructionist ideas about grammar. This volume is comprised of 11 original research articles representing several emerging new research directions in construction grammar, which, together, offer a rich picture of the various directions in which the field seems to be moving.

Nonlinear Potential Theory of Degenerate Elliptic Equations by Juha Heinonen,Tero Kipelainen,Olli Martio Pdf

A self-contained treatment appropriate for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, this volume offers a detailed development of the necessary background for its survey of the nonlinear potential theory of superharmonic functions. Starting with the theory of weighted Sobolev spaces, the text advances to the theory of weighted variational capacity. Succeeding chapters investigate solutions and supersolutions of equations, with emphasis on refined Sobolev spaces, variational integrals, and harmonic functions. Chapter 7 defines superharmonic functions via the comparison principle, and chapters 8 through 14 form the core of the nonlinear potential theory of superharmonic functions. Topics include balayage; Perron's method, barriers, and resolutivity; polar sets; harmonic measure; fine topology; harmonic morphisms; and quasiregular mappings. The book concludes with explorations of axiomatic nonlinear potential theory and helpful appendixes.

Active Inference by Thomas Parr,Giovanni Pezzulo,Karl J. Friston Pdf

The first comprehensive treatment of active inference, an integrative perspective on brain, cognition, and behavior used across multiple disciplines. Active inference is a way of understanding sentient behavior—a theory that characterizes perception, planning, and action in terms of probabilistic inference. Developed by theoretical neuroscientist Karl Friston over years of groundbreaking research, active inference provides an integrated perspective on brain, cognition, and behavior that is increasingly used across multiple disciplines including neuroscience, psychology, and philosophy. Active inference puts the action into perception. This book offers the first comprehensive treatment of active inference, covering theory, applications, and cognitive domains. Active inference is a “first principles” approach to understanding behavior and the brain, framed in terms of a single imperative to minimize free energy. The book emphasizes the implications of the free energy principle for understanding how the brain works. It first introduces active inference both conceptually and formally, contextualizing it within current theories of cognition. It then provides specific examples of computational models that use active inference to explain such cognitive phenomena as perception, attention, memory, and planning.
