Knowledge Utilization, Diffusion, Implementation, Transfer, and Translation by Judith M. Ottoson,Penelope Hawe Pdf

This volume teams up familiar literature in knowledge utilization with related theories of diffusion, implementation, transfer, and translation. Each of these knowledge-for-action theories is reviewed for its disciplinary roots, assumptions about change, key variables, and contextual influences. Cross-talk among these heretofore parallel theories identifies priorities and implications for evaluation practice. This issue provides evaluators with multiple lenses to capture change, including a consideration of complexity, rather than succumb to single-discipline perceptions of value. If we think about the new knowledge enshrined within a policy or program under evaluation as the foreground, then complexity invites evaluators to think more critically about the background, that is, the dynamic properties of the setting or system into which a policy program is introduced and the implications this raises for evaluation. This is the 124th volume of the Jossey-Bass quarterly report series New Directions for Evaluation, an official publication of the American Evaluation Association.

Nursing Theories and Models by Hugh McKenna Pdf

Nursing theory is a major part of all nursing courses and nurses are encouraged to use theories in practice, but it is not always easy for the student to make a real connection between the two. Drawing on many years' experience of teaching and research, Hugh McKenna addresses the theory needs of both students and qualified staff. He demystifies the confusing terminology associated with nursing theory and shows how all nurses can build theory from practice through reflection and analysis. This text offers step-by-step guidelines on: * how to analyse concepts * how to generate and select theory * how to apply and test theory in practice. Written in a friendly, easy to read style, Nursing Theories and Models puts forward realistic strategies for bridging the theory-practice gap.

Tactical Biopolitics by Beatriz Da Costa,Kavita Philip Pdf

Scientists, scholars, and artists consider the political significance of recent advances in the biological sciences. Popular culture in this “biological century” seems to feed on proliferating fears, anxieties, and hopes around the life sciences at a time when such basic concepts as scientific truth, race and gender identity, and the human itself are destabilized in the public eye. Tactical Biopolitics suggests that the political challenges at the intersection of life, science, and art are best addressed through a combination of artistic intervention, critical theorizing, and reflective practices. Transcending disciplinary boundaries, contributions to this volume focus on the political significance of recent advances in the biological sciences and explore the possibility of public participation in scientific discourse, drawing on research and practice in art, biology, critical theory, anthropology, and cultural studies. After framing the subject in terms of both biology and art, Tactical Biopolitics discusses such topics as race and genetics (with contributions from leading biologists Richard Lewontin and Richard Levins); feminist bioscience; the politics of scientific expertise; bioart and the public sphere (with an essay by artist Claire Pentecost); activism and public health (with an essay by Treatment Action Group co-founder Mark Harrington); biosecurity after 9/11 (with essays by artists' collective Critical Art Ensemble and anthropologist Paul Rabinow); and human-animal interaction (with a framing essay by cultural theorist Donna Haraway). Contributors Gaymon Bennett, Larry Carbone, Karen Cardozo, Gary Cass, Beatriz da Costa, Oron Catts, Gabriella Coleman, Critical Art Ensemble, Gwen D'Arcangelis, Troy Duster, Donna Haraway, Mark Harrington, Jens Hauser, Kathy High, Fatimah Jackson, Gwyneth Jones, Jonathan King, Richard Levins, Richard Lewontin, Rachel Mayeri, Sherie McDonald, Claire Pentecost, Kavita Philip, Paul Rabinow, Banu Subramanian, subRosa, Abha Sur, Samir Sur, Jacqueline Stevens, Eugene Thacker, Paul Vanouse, Ionat Zurr

Improving Drug Safety — A Joint Responsibility by Rolf Dinkel,Bruno Horisberger,Kenneth W. Tolo Pdf

As the focus on pharmaceuticals has broadened from concern for their cost and effectiveness to their real and potential risks and benefits, a critical question has been raised: whose responsibility is it to improve drug safety? In April 1990, this question became the theme for a conference at Wolfsberg, Switzerland, near the shores of Lake Constance. Called an "international dialogue conference" by its organizers, the meeting brought together leaders from the pharmaceutical industry, regulatory authorities, academia, medicine, consumer organizations and the media. Opening addresses were given by representatives of the Council for International Organizations of Medical Sciences (CIOMS), the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Associations (IFPMA), the Swiss International Pharmaceutical Agency, and the RAD-AR Consortium. This book documents the papers presented and discussions held at this conference, which took the topic of risks and benefits of drug therapy one step further to responsibility. It includes a rich menu of issues for those who care about the evaluation of drug therapy, the ethics behind it, the expectations of the patient, and the role of traditional and nontraditional drug safety communica tions. The ideas expressed here come from different parts of the world but relate to common drug safety problems, observations, and scientific assessments; they provide insights into innovative approaches, cautious changes, and desired actions. The papers in this volume are broadly divided into conceptual perspectives (ethics, how the knowledge about drug risks and benefits is generated and appraised, the expectations in drug safety) and operational perspectives (communication, discussion, and action).

Mobile Technologies and Applications for the Internet of Things by Michael E. Auer,Thrasyvoulos Tsiatsos Pdf

This book discusses and assesses the latest trends in the interactive mobile field, and presents the outcomes of the 12th International Conference on Interactive Mobile Communication Technologies and Learning (IMCL2018), which was held in Hamilton, Canada on October 11 and 12, 2018. Today, interactive mobile technologies are at the core of many – if not all – fields of society. Not only does the younger generation of students expect a mobile working and learning environment, but also the new ideas, technologies and solutions coming out practically every day are further strengthening this trend. Since its inception in 2006, the conference has been devoted to highlighting new approaches in interactive mobile technologies with a focus on learning. The IMCL conferences have since established themselves as a valuable forum for exchanging and discussing new research results and relevant trends, as well as practical experience and best-practice examples. This book contains papers in the fields of: Interactive Collaborative Mobile Learning Environments Mobile Health Care Training Game-based Learning Design of Internet of Things (IoT) Devices and Applications Assessment and Quality in Mobile Learning. Its potential readership includes policymakers, educators and researchers in pedagogy and learning theory, schoolteachers, the learning industry, further education lecturers, etc.

Secondary Analysis of Electronic Health Records by MIT Critical Data Pdf

This book trains the next generation of scientists representing different disciplines to leverage the data generated during routine patient care. It formulates a more complete lexicon of evidence-based recommendations and support shared, ethical decision making by doctors with their patients. Diagnostic and therapeutic technologies continue to evolve rapidly, and both individual practitioners and clinical teams face increasingly complex ethical decisions. Unfortunately, the current state of medical knowledge does not provide the guidance to make the majority of clinical decisions on the basis of evidence. The present research infrastructure is inefficient and frequently produces unreliable results that cannot be replicated. Even randomized controlled trials (RCTs), the traditional gold standards of the research reliability hierarchy, are not without limitations. They can be costly, labor intensive, and slow, and can return results that are seldom generalizable to every patient population. Furthermore, many pertinent but unresolved clinical and medical systems issues do not seem to have attracted the interest of the research enterprise, which has come to focus instead on cellular and molecular investigations and single-agent (e.g., a drug or device) effects. For clinicians, the end result is a bit of a “data desert” when it comes to making decisions. The new research infrastructure proposed in this book will help the medical profession to make ethically sound and well informed decisions for their patients.
