Handbook of Human-Computer Interaction by M.G. Helander Pdf

This Handbook is concerned with principles of human factors engineering for design of the human-computer interface. It has both academic and practical purposes; it summarizes the research and provides recommendations for how the information can be used by designers of computer systems. The articles are written primarily for the professional from another discipline who is seeking an understanding of human-computer interaction, and secondarily as a reference book for the professional in the area, and should particularly serve the following: computer scientists, human factors engineers, designers and design engineers, cognitive scientists and experimental psychologists, systems engineers, managers and executives working with systems development. The work consists of 52 chapters by 73 authors and is organized into seven sections. In the first section, the cognitive and information-processing aspects of HCI are summarized. The following group of papers deals with design principles for software and hardware. The third section is devoted to differences in performance between different users, and computer-aided training and principles for design of effective manuals. The next part presents important applications: text editors and systems for information retrieval, as well as issues in computer-aided engineering, drawing and design, and robotics. The fifth section introduces methods for designing the user interface. The following section examines those issues in the AI field that are currently of greatest interest to designers and human factors specialists, including such problems as natural language interface and methods for knowledge acquisition. The last section includes social aspects in computer usage, the impact on work organizations and work at home.

Handbook of Human Factors in Web Design by Kim-Phuong L. Vu,Robert W. Proctor Pdf

The Handbook of Human Factors in Web Design covers basic human factors issues relating to screen design, input devices, and information organization and processing, as well as addresses newer features which will become prominent in the next generation of Web technologies. These include multimodal interfaces, wireless capabilities, and agents that can improve convenience and usability. Written by leading researchers and/or practitioners in the field, this volume reflects the varied backgrounds and interests of individuals involved in all aspects of human factors and Web design and includes chapters on a full range of topics. Divided into 12 sections, this book addresses: *historical backgrounds and overviews of Human Factors and Ergonomics (HFE); *specific subfields of HFE; *issues involved in content preparation for the Web; *information search and interactive information agents; *designing for universal access and specific user populations; *the importance of incorporating usability evaluations in the design process; *task analysis, meaning analysis, and performance modeling; *specific Web applications in academic and industrial settings; *Web psychology and information security; *emerging technological developments and applications for the Web; and *the costs and benefits of incorporating human factors for the Web and the state of current guidelines. The Handbook of Human Factors in Web Design is intended for researchers and practitioners concerned with all aspects of Web design. It could also be used as a text for advanced courses in computer science, industrial engineering, and psychology.

Basics Interactive Design: User Experience Design by Gavin Allanwood,Peter Beare Pdf

User Experience (UX) and User Experience Design (UXD) challenge existing usability models by changing the emphasis from task and usage to a broader understanding of experience and purpose. UX techniques are gaining popularity across a range of current digital media design and development areas. Today's designers need to create work that will impact positively on everyone who is exposed to it, as work is delivered across diverse digital platforms accessible to huge populations. It may be passive and immutable or interactive and dynamic, but the success of the design will depend largely on how well the user experience is constructed. Basics Interactive Design 02: User Experience Design introduces an approach to graphic design that puts human experience at the forefront of the design process. Throughout the book, Gavin Allanwood and Peter Beare show how design skills can be improved by undertaking practical exercises and reviewing the work, style and motivations of leading practitioners.

Interactive Information Seeking, Behaviour and Retrieval by Ian Ruthven,Diane Kelly Pdf

Information retrieval (IR) is a complex human activity supported by sophisticated systems. Information science has contributed much to the design and evaluation of previous generations of IR system development and to our general understanding of how such systems should be designed and yet, due to the increasing success and diversity of IR systems, many recent textbooks concentrate on IR systems themselves and ignore the human side of searching for information. This book is the first text to provide an information science perspective on IR. Unique in its scope, the book covers the whole spectrum of information retrieval, including: history and background information behaviour and seeking task-based information searching and retrieval approaches to investigating information interaction and behaviour information representation access models evaluation interfaces for IR interactive techniques web retrieval, ranking and personalization recommendation, collaboration and social search multimedia: interfaces and access. Readership: Senior undergraduates and masters' level students of all information and library studies courses and practising LIS professionals who need to better appreciate how IR systems are designed, implemented and evaluated.
