Design Studio Two: Architecture as a Humanistic Endeavor by Zachary Elliott Pdf

Studio Two as a class was heavily focused on the interaction between nature, light, and architecture, and the use of graphic communication. Like Design Studio One, there were times where we as friends would help each other, comfort each other, and raise one another up through both our words and our actions. Yet unlike that first semester, where we began as distant strangers, we began the second studio as close friends, and by the end, we cared about one another like a true family, a tight knit group of like-minded individuals, hard-workers, and brilliant minds. For the unique friendships, the excellent professors, and the eccentric projects, Studio Two will be remembered for a very long time, showing us that architecture is, fundamentally, a humanistic endeavor.

Minoru Yamasaki by Dale Allen Gyure Pdf

The first book to reevaluate the evocative and polarizing work of one of midcentury America’s most significant architects Born to Japanese immigrant parents in Seattle, Minoru Yamasaki (1912–1986) became one of the towering figures of midcentury architecture, even appearing on the cover of Time magazine in 1963. His self-proclaimed humanist designs merged the modern materials and functional considerations of postwar American architecture with traditional elements such as arches and colonnades. Yamasaki’s celebrated and iconic projects of the 1950s and ’60s, including the Lambert–St. Louis Airport and the U.S. Science Pavilion in Seattle, garnered popular acclaim. Despite this initial success, Yamasaki’s reputation began to decline in the 1970s with the mixed critical reception of the World Trade Center in New York, one of the most publicized projects in the world at the time, and the spectacular failure of St. Louis’s Pruitt-Igoe Apartments, which came to symbolize the flaws of midcentury urban renewal policy. And as architecture moved in a more critical direction influenced by postmodern theory, Yamasaki seemed increasingly old-fashioned. In the first book to examine Yamasaki’s life and career, Dale Allen Gyure draws on a wealth of previously unpublished archival material, and nearly 200 images, to contextualize his work against the framework of midcentury modernism and explore his initial successes, his personal struggles—including with racism—and the tension his work ultimately found in the divide between popular and critical taste.

Echos by Mara Marcu,Edward Mitchell Pdf

The publication captures the work done at the University of Cincinnati School of Architecture and Interior Design while showcasing student work, faculty research, co-op stories, study abroad programs, and snapshots from the many events happening at our school. ECHOS is a platform for simultaneous conversations with shared ethos at UC SAID. Various constellations begin to surface and map our diverse milieu of academic and social interactions that revolve around the following five main themes: anxiety, praxis, trope, chreod, and utopia. Introduced by a series of analytical diagrams which are paired up with essays by lead figures in the discipline, the themes expand on the issues of theoretical anxiety, architectural discourse, practice, typology, self-made analogies, ad hoc morphologies inherent to research, flux and reflux - that return each disruption to a steady trajectory - similar to the natural cycle of compression and release generated by our co-op program, and the fictitious, the ideal. Anxiety collects and synthesizes among multiple contradicting theories entertaining with equanimity various solutions to design problems. Praxis looks at outcomes - may those be physical, prototypical, digital or analog, multi-dimensional and multi-media, spoken, written or unwritten - as well as working methodologies that shape design thinking. Trope begins to map out trends, emergent ideologies, and previously non-denominational design expressions. Chreod documents and interprets field conditions, rule based processes, issues of transgressions, non-smooth and nomadic entities which cut across arbolic like divisions. Utopia, while suspending various otherwise necessary constraints, allows for a euphoric and optimistic view of the world, with the goal of envisioning daring possibilities otherwise unimaginable. Utopia, therefore, foreshadows all other themes.
