Democratic Destiny and the District of Columbia by Ronald W. Walters,Toni-Michelle Travis Pdf

This book contributes substantially to urban affairs and public policy literature by presenting an introduction to the complex politics and public policy issues of Washington, D.C. The uniqueness of the city, as elaborated in this volume, provides background for understanding the non-traditional congressional relationship with the city and the way in which this establishes and perpetuates the continuing fight for congressional representation, real home rule and equitable federal benefits for citizens of the District of Columbia. Usually becoming a mayor, member of a city council, or agency head in a major city could become a stepping stone to higher office. In Washington, D.C. however, this has not been the case. Contests for political leadership operate in a unique political climate because Washington, D.C is the capital of the U.S., subject to congressional oversight, has a majority African American population, and has a majority Democratic population. Those who become mayor are therefore, confined to play a local with rare opportunities for a national role. One Objective of this volume is to highlight the difficulties of experiencing political democracy and adequate policy distribution by citizens of the District of Columbia. These analyses conclude that one of the major obstacles to these objectives is the manner in which home rule was constructed and persists, leading to the conclusion that the desire of citizens and their leaders for change is well founded.

THIS BOOK will eventually comprise of two volumes. This first volume provides a historical perspective on the impact of the evolution of human consciousness on world affairs. The first part of the book, Human Destiny, identifies the underlying patterns that have guided the evolution of individual human consciousness and group (societal) consciousness over the past 10,000 years, and the impact that this evolution has had on the quality of governance and level of democracy currently being experienced in nations around the world. The second part, The Evolution of Democracy, describes the seven values that are required to create a high-trust liberal democracy-the journey from freedom to trust. The third part, The Destiny of Nations, explores the impact that the future evolution of human consciousness will have on world affairs with reference to the need for, and the practicalities involved in, creating the conditions that allow democratic nations to work together to resolve the major issues facing the world.

Pathfinding Our Destiny by Charles Hugh Smith Pdf

"As the pace of change explodes from gradual to non-linear, the organizations that dominate our economy--centralized corporations and government--become destined to fail. We see this failure in both the soaring inequality that has hollowed out the American Dream as well as in the rising tide of social and political disunity. To prevent the fall of our democratic republic, we must transform our economy and society from the ground up. Inventing Leadership by J. Thomas Wren Pdf

Tom Wren s book is a masterpiece of intellectual history. It explores the philosophical and historical foundations of democracy in a compelling way. Wren is a sparkling and graceful writer. He makes a potentially dry subject come alive with wit and insight. The issues Wren addresses are extremely timely, as the United States endeavors to advance democracy in the Middle East. George Goethals, University of Richmond, US In this important analysis of democratic thought and treatise on leadership, historian Tom Wren drills down to the essential intellectual paradox: that leadership and democracy are inherently hostile concepts. Wren brilliantly strips down our fictions concerning these domains in his extensive deconstruction of both classical and modern thought. What emerges is a dialectical awakening and a practical new vision of citizen participation and enlightened leadership. Georgia Sorenson, James MacGregor Burns Academy of Leadership, University of Maryland, College Park and US Army An excellent scholarly work that is well written and highly relevant within the context of contemporary politics. Although essential reading for teachers and students of political theory, it will also interest the general reader and armchair politician. First Trust Bank Economic Outlook and Business Review Wren is to be commended for attempting to lay bare the underlying assumptions and premises that inform any approach to politics. . . an important contribution to an ongoing conversation about what contemporary leadership should look like. Undergraduates will benefit from his review of important theorists, and practitioners should be challenged by Wren s own theses about leadership. Highly recommended. All readership levels. M.J. Watson, Choice The tension between ruler and ruled in democratic societies has never been satisfactorily resolved, and the competing interpretations of this relationship lie at the bottom of much modern political discourse. In this fascinating book, Thomas Wren clarifies and elevates the debates over leadership by identifying the fundamental premises and assumptions that underlie past and present understandings. The author traces the intellectual history of the central constructs: the leader, the people, and, ultimately, the relationship between them as they seek to accomplish societal objectives. He begins with a discussion of the invented notion of the classical paragon of a ruler. Next he pursues the invention of the countervailing concept of a sovereign people, and finally, the need for the invention of a new construct leadership which embodies a new relation between ruler and ruled in regimes dedicated to power in the people. In doing so, he draws upon the giants of the Western intellectual tradition as well as the insights of modern historians, political scientists, sociologists and leadership scholars. The book concludes with a proposed model of leadership for a modern democratic world. Elegantly written and masterfully argued, this comprehensive study will be essential reading for students and scholars of leadership and democracy.

Destiny and Democracy by Charles Edward Delgadillo Pdf

American democracy was challenged by both foreign and domestic threats during the early twentieth century. Millions of Americans were denied their full rights as citizens as a result of social, political, and economic developments that created tremendous inequality, which raised the specter of social disintegration. Similarly, imperialism and autocracy in the world stoked conflicts that threatened to entangle the US, leading to fears that American democracy might be sacrificed in pursuit of victory in a foreign war. Liberals sought to place America's democratic system on a sustainable footing by uniting domestic and foreign policy reform, creating a world-conscious liberalism that dominated American politics for a generation.
