Goethe's Search for the Muse by David B. Richards Pdf

That Goethe was also a translator is a well-kept secret. However, in this study the main focus lies on these translations. Especially on his five longest and most important ones, such as Diderot’s Le Neveu de Rameau and Cellini’s Vita. Not only will the translations be discussed but – and maybe even more importantly – also will this study try to give an answer to the motivation of Goethe. Why did he devote so much time to these translations? This volume offers a complete new perspective on Goethe and his works.

Goethe's Visual World by Pamela Currie Pdf

Goethe's ideas on colour and imagery crossed many borderlines: those of artistic processes and philosophical aesthetics, art history and colour theory, together with the science of perception. This investigation into his writings ranges across art from Antiquity, the Renaissance and the eighteenth century, as well as exploring the centrality of these issues to Goethe's literary work. Questions find answers, but also raise new questions. This systematic sequence of essays, originally written between 1999 and 2011, appeals to readers in all these separate areas, while drawing together their essential coherence.

Diderot and the Encyclopaedists by John Morley Pdf

This book features the most significant aspects of life and work of Denis Diderot (1713-1784), French philosopher, art critic, and writer, who is best known for serving as co-founder, chief editor, and contributor to the Encyclopédie. Diderot was a prominent figure during the Age of Enlightenment. In the 1740s he wrote many of his best-known works in both fiction and non-fiction, including the 1748 novel The Indiscreet Jewels. In 1751, Diderot co-created the Encyclopédie with Jean le Rond d'Alembert. The Encyclopédie is most famous for representing the thought of the Enlightenment. Its contributors advocated for the secularization of learning away from the Jesuits. Diderot wanted to incorporate all of the world's knowledge into the Encyclopédie and hoped that the text could disseminate all this information to the public and future generations. It was also the first encyclopedia to include contributions from many named contributors and the first to describe the mechanical arts. Its secular tone, which included articles skeptical about Biblical miracles, angered both religious and government authorities; in 1758 it was banned by the Catholic Church and in 1759 the French government banned it as well, although this ban was not strictly enforced. Many of the initial contributors to the Encyclopédie left the project as a result of its controversies and some were even jailed. D'Alembert left in 1759, making Diderot the sole editor. Diderot also became the main contributor, writing around 7,000 articles. He continued working on the project until 1765. The Encyclopédie is often considered an influence and one of the forerunners of the French Revolution because of its emphasis on Enlightenment political theories.

Rameau's Nephew, or the Second Satire by Denis Diderot Pdf

A new translation of Denis Diderot's 1776 Rameau's Nephew, or the Second Satire from the original German manuscript into American English. The only surviving copy of Diderot's original French-language printinng of Rameau's Nephew is Goethe's translation. Hence, this is translated from the German. This edition contains an afterword by the translator on Diderot's philosophic legacy, a timeline of his works and life, and a glossary of philosophic terminology utilized in his works. Like many of Diderot's best works, "Rameau's Nephew" was not printed during his lifetime. The manuscript came to St. Petersburg, where Goethe's boyhood friend Klinger discovered it; it reached Schiller, who asked Goethe to translate it. An adventurously beautiful and cool text - and Goethe's most ingenious and interesting translation work. This is considered one of Diderot's most influential works, showcasing his mastery of satire and his ability to provoke thought and reflection on societal norms and values. It is a dialogue between two characters, the narrator and Rameau's nephew, discussing various topics including art, society, and morality. The work offers a satirical critique of the French society of the time, exposing its contradictions and hypocrisy. Diderot uses the character of Rameau's nephew to challenge social conventions and question the notions of success, morality, and genius. The work had a profound impact on subsequent literary and philosophical movements, with Friedrich Nietzsche regarding it as a work of genius and Immanuel Kant expressing his admiration for its wit and sharp social critique. "Rameau's Nephew" is considered one of Diderot's most influential works, showcasing his mastery of satire and his ability to provoke thought and reflection on societal norms and values. Denis Diderot is a critical figure of the Enlightenment who receives little attention from modern day philosophers. Diderot lived in the shadow of Rousseau and Volatire, whom he knew and worked with. Die Wende Von Der Aufklärung Zur Romantik 1760-1820 by Horst Albert Glaser,György Mihály Vajda Pdf

This volume is the twelfth to date in a series of works in French or English presenting the epochs and movements of a Comparative History of Literatures in European Languages (Histoire Comparée des Littératures de Langues Européennes). The original intention of the editors was to publish a four-volume history of European literature from 1760-1820, and the first of these volumes, Des Lumières au Romantisme. Genres en Vers, appeared as long ago as 1982. The volumes Genres en Prose and Théâtre are still awaited. In their absence the present volume, Epoche im _berblick, attempts a more comprehensive and rigorous treatment of the period and its historiographical problems than was initially planned, providing the reader with an overview of sixty eventful years of European literary history — years in which German Classicism coincided with the birth, initially in Germany and England, of Romanticism. And at the centre of this turbulent period of European intellectual and literary history stands the French Revolution.
