Disconnected Operation in a Distributed File System by James J. Kistler Pdf

This book is based on the author's PhD thesis which was selected during the 1993 ACM Doctoral Dissertation Competition as one of the three best submissions. The focus of this work is on the issue of availability in distributed file systems. It presents the important new technique called disconnected operation, in which clients mask failures and voluntary network detachments by emulating the functionality of servers where actual server-oriented solutions are inadequate. This permits client operation even under complete isolation from the server; the clean integration of mobile computers into the system is an important side-effect of the new technique. The design and implementation of disconnected file service in a working system, the Coda file system, is described in detail.

Papers in Philosophical Logic: Volume 1 by David Lewis Pdf

This is the first of a three-volume collection of David Lewis's most recent papers in all the areas to which he has made significant contributions. The purpose of this collection (and the two volumes to follow) is to disseminate even more widely the work of a preeminent and influential late twentieth-century philosopher. The papers are now offered in a readily accessible format. This first volume is devoted to Lewis's work on philosophical logic from the last twenty-five years. The topics covered include: deploying the methods of formal semantics from artificial formalised languages to natural languages, model-theoretic investigations of intensional logic, contradiction, relevance, the differences between analog and digital representation, and questions arising from the construction of ambitious formalised philosophical systems. The volume will serve as an important reference tool for all philosophers and their students.

Functions with Disconnected Spectrum by Alexander M. Olevskii,Alexander Ulanovskii Pdf

The classical sampling problem is to reconstruct entire functions with given spectrum S from their values on a discrete set L. From the geometric point of view, the possibility of such reconstruction is equivalent to determining for which sets L the exponential system with frequencies in L forms a frame in the space L2(S). The book also treats the problem of interpolation of discrete functions by analytic ones with spectrum in S and the problem of completeness of discrete translates. The size and arithmetic structure of both the spectrum S and the discrete set L play a crucial role in these problems. After an elementary introduction, the authors give a new presentation of classical results due to Beurling, Kahane, and Landau. The main part of the book focuses on recent progress in the area, such as construction of universal sampling sets, high-dimensional and non-analytic phenomena. The reader will see how methods of harmonic and complex analysis interplay with various important concepts in different areas, such as Minkowski's lattice, Kolmogorov's width, and Meyer's quasicrystals. The book is addressed to graduate students and researchers interested in analysis and its applications. Due to its many exercises, mostly given with hints, the book could be useful for undergraduates.

Disconnected by Marina Bassi,Matías Busso,Sergio Urzúa,Jaime Vargas Pdf

Disconnected is a path-breaking analysis of the relationship between schooling and employers in Latin America. It is sophisticated in its design, using multiple surveys and multiple methods. It distinguishes carefully among different types of skills and the relationship of each type to employment outcomes and employer needs. It examines both the demand and the supply side of the labor market. And it provides guidance for further work. We commend this book to all readers, scholars, and practitioners concerned with schooling and job markets in Latin America.

Connected and Disconnected in Viet Nam by Philip Taylor Pdf

Vietnam’s shift to a market-based society has brought about profound realignments in its people’s relations with each other. As the nation continues its retreat from the legacies of war and socialism, significant social rifts have emerged that divide citizens by class, region and ethnicity. By drawing on social connections as a traditional resource, Vietnamese are able to accumulate wealth, overcome marginalisation and achieve social mobility. However, such relationship-building strategies are also fraught with peril for they have the potential to entrench pre-existing social divisions and lead to new forms of disconnectedness. This book examines the dynamics of connection and disconnection in the lives of contemporary Vietnamese. It features 11 chapters by anthropologists who draw upon research in both highland and lowland contexts to shed light on social capital disparities, migration inequalities and the benefits and perils of gift exchange. The authors investigate ethnic minority networks, the politics of poverty, patriotic citizenship, and the ‘heritagisation’ of culture. Tracing shifts in how Vietnamese people relate to their consociates and others, the chapters elucidate the social legacies of socialism, nation-building and the transition to a globalised market-based economy. With compelling case studies and including many previously unheard perspectives, this book offers original insights into social ties and divisions among the modern Vietnamese.

DisConnected by Steve Taylor PhD, author of 'The Leap' and 'Spiritual Science' Pdf

'Essential reading in this day and age.' Bernardo Kastrup, philosopher, author of Why Materialism is Baloney DisConnected offers a new vision of human nature and a new understanding of human behaviour and social problems. Connection is the most essential human trait - it determines our behaviour and our level of well-being. Cruelty is the result of a sense of disconnection, while “goodness” stems from connection. Unfortunately, the most disconnected people gravitate to positions of power, which leads to “pathocracy,” the most common form of government during the 20th century. Disconnected societies are patriarchal, hierarchical and warlike. Connected societies are egalitarian, democratic and peaceful. We can measure both social progress and personal development in terms of how far we move along a continuum of connection. At the most essential level, we are always interconnected. Altruism and spirituality are experiences of our fundamental connection. Regaining awareness of our connection is the only way by which we can live in harmony with ourselves, one another, and the world itself.

Disconnected Youth? by R. MacDonald,J. Marsh Pdf

How do young people get by in hard times and hard places? Have they become a 'lost generation' disconnected from society's mainstream? Do popular ideas about social exclusion or a welfare dependent underclass really connect with the lived experiences of the so-called 'disaffected', 'disengaged' and 'difficult-to-reach'? Based on close-up research with young men and women from localities suffering social exclusion in extreme form, Disconnected Youth? will appeal to all those who are interested in understanding and tackling the problems of growing up in Britain's poor neighbourhoods.
