Life's Work and God's Discipline by Charles John Vaughan Pdf

Excerpt from Life's Work and God's Discipline: Three Sermons Preached Before the University of Cambridge, in April and May, 1865 If any man's work shall he burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire. The work burned, and the person saved - the life gone for nothing, and yet the soul rescued as through fire - this is a combination as startling as it is unique. The text, if this be its meaning, certainly stands alone in Holy Scripture. In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established. The Duty and the Discipline of Extemporary Preaching (Classic Reprint) by F. Barham Zincke Pdf

Excerpt from The Duty and the Discipline of Extemporary Preaching I take this opportunity to say that in the Notes and Studies of Sermons, which form the latter part of the volume, I had but one object in view - that of illustrating in some particulars my previous remarks on Preaching. In selecting the Sermons that seemed suitable for this purpose from those I preached during the time I was engaged in writing the first part of the book, I passed by all that were of a purely doctrinal character, because I shrank from dissecting, and from regarding, in a rhetorical light, the treatment of the most sacred of all subjects. Many are asking how the efficiency of the Church may be so increased as to enable her to meet the peculiar and pressing difficulties of the times. No one would think of limiting the reply to any single measure, or recommendation. The following pages endeavor to direct attention to what I would beg per mission to call a more instructed, and if so, then a more fruitful use of the oldest and most necessary of all the means that have been committed to the Church for enabling her to propagate the Faith. The Discipline of the Christian Character (Classic Reprint) by Richard William Church Pdf

Excerpt from The Discipline of the Christian Character "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus." - Phil. ii.5. The special instance of the "mind" of Christ Jesus, which the Apostle speaks of in this place, is, as you will remember, His voluntary humiliation for our sakes, out of love for us - His Incarnation and His Passion. That was, indeed, the supreme disclosure of His "mind"; its unexampled and unapproachable manifestation. But the "mind of Christ" is here set before Christians as the standard for their own life, and that not only in its critical and urgent trials, but in the every day details of feeling and behaviour. Our National Discipline by Marvin Richardson Vincent Pdf

Excerpt from Our National Discipline: A Thanksgiving Sermon, Preached in the First Presbyterian Church, Troy Above every other man, the Christian minister is to stand in the ways and see. While he is to be exempt from the dictation of public Opinion as to the manner in which he shall deal with evil, he is to find his most telling texts and sermons in contemporary men and events. Religion, if it have no relation to such subjects, may be useful for angels, but not for men. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Discipline and Other Sermons (Esprios Classics) by Charles Kingsley Pdf

Charles Kingsley (12 June 1819 - 23 January 1875) was a broad-church priest of the Church of England, a university professor, social reformer, historian, novelist and poet. He is particularly associated with Christian socialism, the working men's college, and forming labour cooperatives, which failed, but encouraged later working reforms. He was a friend and correspondent of Charles Darwin. Kingsley's interest in history is shown in several of his writings, including The Heroes (1856), a children's book about Greek mythology, and several historical novels, of which the best known are Hypatia (1853), Hereward the Wake (1865) and Westward Ho! (1855).

The Divine Life in Man by Frederick A. Noble Pdf

Excerpt from The Divine Life in Man: And Other Sermons Often as any soul comes under the regenerating power of the gospel and is born into the kingdom. This is what is brought out with an almost start ling distinctness in the group of passages standing at the head of this discourse. Man, like God, is per sonal and spiritual. He has the source of his being in God. He has come into life in virtue of the breath Of God in his soul. He has a certain intel lectual and moral likeness to God; and by cultivation and discipline this likeness may be advanced till his thought and will reflect, in some measure, the thought and will of God, and all his movements and desires are in the direction of God. He may yield his whole nature - all his powers and faculties - up to the guid ance of God, and the current of an exalted fellow ship may flow back and forth between his heart and the heart Of God. Having fallen out of this fellow ship, and lost this divine life, through sin, he may yet find it again through faith in the Son of God, who came into the world for the express purpose of renewing men dead in trespasses and sins, and re storing the marred image in which they were made. He may have inward witness that God is his Father, and that he is God's child. He may know and eh joy God. These are general statements covering the case. The further development of the subject will be pro moted best by asking two or three questions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Spirit of Discipline; Sermons Preached by Francis Paget Pdf

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1894 edition. Excerpt: ... XXI. A GOOD EXAMPLE. BISHOP ANDREWES: HIS TIME AND WORK. There are many ways, I think, in which we may be helped by the study of those passages in the history of the English Church which seem to have been characterized by especial elements of difficulty and distress. For so we may be taught to take a truer measure of the troubles and imperfections and anxieties of our own day; to see how hopefully a man may try to deal with them, and to do his work in spite of much that he would fain have otherwise; refusing to let the wholesome sense of urgency degenerate into the weakness of panic or fretful impatience. Again, we may thus deepen our loyalty and our love towards the Church, which in such trials has evinced her God-given power of endurance and advance, and, holding her course through the dimness and the storm has emerged with surer strength of experience and self-realization for whatever still remains to be undertaken or endured. But we may also learn a lesson which will bear more directly on our own conduct, helping us to bestow aright whatever of effort, labour, service, and self-sacrifice we may have to contribute to the setting forward of God's cause in our own age. For plainly every one of us may, if he will, do something, be it much or little, towards making that which will be the history of our generation; and the abiding worth of whatever he can do will depend, perhaps, mainly on his just discernment of the chief issues that are being either decided or kept open in his day; on his correcting in his own mind the misplaced emphasis of common talk and controversy; on his throwing whatever strength he has into the real, and not the merely apparent crisis of the perpetual conflict between truth and error, between good and evil, or...
