The interrelated topics of discourse representation and text processing are amongst the most important in psycholinguistic research, and have generated a vast literature. This collection is not intended as an overview of this work, rather it focuses on some of the central issues that arise out of the mental models theory of text comprehension. According to this theory, the content of discourse is represented in mental models of parts of the real or an imaginary world, and these models are constructed incrementally as texts are processed. Mental models theory emphasises the role of anaphoric expressions, such as definite pronouns, in linking the information in different parts of the text and, more generally, the role of inferences in constructing mental models. It also recognises the importance of formal linguistic processes, such as semantic combination, in computing the information in the current clause that is to be added into the model. The papers in this volume reflect these aspects of mental models theory. They cover the understanding of noun-noun combinations, the interpretation of pronouns, and inference making. Throughout, the emphasis is on the flexibility of the language processing system and its extensive, and often extremely rapid, use of knowledge about the world. International interest in mental models theory is reflected in contributions from the United States, the United Kingdom and Continental Europe, where there is a rapidly growing interest in experimental psycholinguistics in general and mental models theory in particular. Language and Cognitive Processes is an international journal which publishes theoretical and experimental research into the mental processes and representations involved in language use. Discourse Processing here is framed as marking up a text with structural descriptions on several levels, which can serve to support many language-processing or text-mining tasks. We first explore some ways of assigning structure on the document level: the logical document structure as determined by the layout of the text, its genre-specific content structure, and its breakdown into topical segments. Then the focus moves to phenomena of local coherence. We introduce the problem of coreference and look at methods for building chains of coreferring entities in the text. Next, the notion of coherence relation is introduced as the second important factor of local coherence. Preface This book is about semantics and logic. More specifically, it is about the semantics and logic of natural language; and, even more specifically than that, it is about a particular way of dealing with those subjects, known as Discourse Representation Theory, or DRT. DRT is an approach towards natural language semantics which, some thirteen years ago, arose out of attempts to deal with two distinct problems. The first of those was the semantic puzzle that had been brought to contempo rary attention by Geach's notorious "donkey sentences" - sentences like If Pedro owns some donkey, he beats it, in which the anaphoric connection we perceive between the indefinite noun phrase some donkey and the pronoun it may seem to conflict with the existential meaning of the word some. The second problem had to do with tense and aspect. Some languages, for instance French and the other Romance languages, have two morphologically distinct past tenses, a simple past (the French Passe Simple) and a continuous past (the French Imparfait). To articulate precisely what the difference between these tenses is has turned out to be surprisingly difficult.

ABOUT THIS BOOK This book is intended for researchers who want to keep abreast of cur rent developments in corpus-based natural language processing. It is not meant as an introduction to this field; for readers who need one, several entry-level texts are available, including those of (Church and Mercer, 1993; Charniak, 1993; Jelinek, 1997). This book captures the essence of a series of highly successful work shops held in the last few years. The response in 1993 to the initial Workshop on Very Large Corpora (Columbus, Ohio) was so enthusias tic that we were encouraged to make it an annual event. The following year, we staged the Second Workshop on Very Large Corpora in Ky oto. As a way of managing these annual workshops, we then decided to register a special interest group called SIGDAT with the Association for Computational Linguistics. The demand for international forums on corpus-based NLP has been expanding so rapidly that in 1995 SIGDAT was led to organize not only the Third Workshop on Very Large Corpora (Cambridge, Mass. ) but also a complementary workshop entitled From Texts to Tags (Dublin). Obviously, the success of these workshops was in some measure a re flection of the growing popularity of corpus-based methods in the NLP community. But first and foremost, it was due to the fact that the work shops attracted so many high-quality papers.
