Lost in Barkerville by Bitten Acherman Pdf
"Lost in Barkerville is a young reader novel in which two students and their teacher, Miss Reid, are on a school field trip to Yale. Once there in Yale, they travel back in time to Fort Yale in 1866. They then travel up the Cariboo Wagon Road to Barkerville, find work there and live for a time. Then their friend is caught up in a murder trial. At first it is thought that Judge Begbie will sentence him to hang, but one of the boys intervenes and the sentence is changed to life in prison. The second boy then arranges for their friend's brother to come to Barkerville and present new evidence to Judge Begbie and their friend is released. The trio finally return "in time" to Fort Yale and meet up once again with the members of their field trip. The author, Bitten Acherman, has done much research into the gold rush period, and she introduces a great deal of factual information into the novel about the Cariboo gold rush, Fort Yale, the Cariboo Wagon Road and Barkerville, with accounts of many of the larger-than life characters of the time, such as Billy Barker and Judge Begbie, but also many of the lesser-known people of the time."--

The Gold Crusades by Douglas Fetherling Pdf
Among the hordes of starry-eyed 'argonauts' who flocked to the California gold rush of 1849 was an Australian named Edward Hargraves. He left America empty-handed, only to find gold in his own backyard. The result was the great Australian rush of the 1850s, which also attracted participants from around the world. A South African named P.J. Marais was one of them. Marais too returned home in defeat – only to set in motion the diamond and gold rushes that transformed southern Africa. And so it went. Most previous historians of the gold rushes have tended to view them as acts of spontaneous nationalism. Each country likes to see its own gold rush as the one that either shaped those that followed or epitomized all the rest. In The Gold Crusades: A Social History of Gold Rushes, 1849-1929, Douglas Fetherling takes a different approach. Fetherling argues that the gold rushes in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa shared the same causes and results, the same characters and characteristics. He posits that they were in fact a single discontinuous event, an expression of the British imperial experience and nineteenth-century liberalism. He does so with dash and style and with a sharp eye for the telling anecdote, the out-of-the-way document, and the bold connection between seemingly unrelated disciplines. Originally published by Macmillan of Canada, 1988.

Barkerville, Quesnel and the Cariboo Gold Rush by Gordon R. Elliott Pdf
Gold was the element that turned British Columbia's interior plateau from an unknown wilderness into a region of thriving settlements and frenetic activity. As news of its discovery fi ltered to the outside world, adventurers, opportunists and suppliers from around the globe converged on the region's new towns or built even newer ones close to their claims. Van Winkle, Swamp River, Antler and many more settlements sprang up, only to fade quickly when the glitter ran out. But two towns were vital enough to survive: Quesnel, at the confl uence of the Quesnel and Fraser rivers; and Barkerville, where many of the richest strikes were made. Th is is their story, and the story of one of the most romantic episodes in western Canadian history - the Cariboo Gold Rush. Gordon Elliott fi rst wrote this classic account of the Cariboo's early history almost fi fty years ago. Revised and reissued in 1978, it is off ered here once again, this time with a new forward by Blanca Schorcht. Elliott was one of the fi rst staff hired by Simon Fraser University when it opened in 1965. Nearly 40 years later, he continues to serve as Professor Emeritus of English at SFU. Elliott has spent many years combining his interest in history with considerable writing, research and editing skills, providing assistance and furthering the study of British Columbia history, with works including Klondike Cattle Drive and British Columbia: A Centennial Anthology.

Hidden Heritage by Priscilla Wegars Pdf
Beginning in the mid-nineteenth century, large numbers of people from mainland China emigrated to the United States and other countries seeking employment. Termed "overseas Chinese," they made lasting contributions to the development of early communities, an impact which has only begun to be recognized in recent years. "Chinatowns," rural mining claims, work camps for railroad and other construction activities, salmon canneries and shrimp camps, laundries, stores, cook shacks, cemeteries, and temples are only some of the sites where traces of their presence can be found. In recent years, numerous archaeological and historical investigations of the overseas Chinese have taken place, and "Hidden Heritage" presents the results of some of those studies.

Looking Back at the Cariboo-Chilcotin with Irene Stangoe by Irene Stangoe Pdf
As a complement to her popular book Cariboo-Chilcotin: Pioneer People and Places, Irene Stangoe has crafted a second collection of stories about the BC Interior's pioneers and the trails they blazed. In 26 separate tales she introduces a mosaic of personalities and events that spans 120 years. Stangoe fondly recalls the Indian Girls' Pipe Band, the world-famous MacKinnon sisters, the amazing ice-fishing secrets of Lac la Hache and more. Irene Stangoe has been "looking back" at the Cariboo-Chilcotin for almost half a century. Originally drawn to the region from her Burnaby-New Westminster roots in 1950, when she and her husband, Clive, bought the Williams Lake Tribune, Irene filled in as reporter, community editor, columnist, advertising salesperson and just about anywhere else she was needed until the newspaper was sold in 1973. In 1975, unable to fully retire, Irene established her "Looking Back" column at the Tribune and soon gained recognition as one of the most readable history writers in the weekly newspaper field. Between 1986 and 1991, she was awarded a first place and two seconds in the annual Best Historical Writing Competition.

Barkerville and the Cariboo Goldfields by Richard Wright Pdf
The stories of the men and women who dug for gold on Williams Creek are told in this revised and updated edition of a Canadian bestseller. The legendary town of Barkerville is flourishing today, just as it did more than 150 years ago, but this time under the care of professional and amateur historians. Richard Thomas Wright peels back the pages of history as he unearths the area's history and chronicles the fortunes and the follies of gold-rush-era Barkerville. The result of years of around-the-world research, Barkerville and the Cariboo Goldfields brings to life the men and women of the creeks who came in search of gold and left their mark on BC history. Wright mined the archives to bring forth new information on the development of the Cariboo goldfields and nearby places of interest. Barkerville includes dozens of little-known historical photos and a complete index. It is the best, most comprehensive source of detailed information on this important national heritage site.

Whoever Gives Us Bread by Lynne Bowen Pdf
Whoever Gives us Bread is a lively people's history from the 1860s to the 1960s, as told by an award-winning historian. In the early 1860s, Italians began trickling into British Columbia via San Francisco. Fleeing grinding poverty back home, they came north to the isolated valleys and cities of the province to pan for gold, raise cattle, dig coal, fell timber, build railroads, smelt copper and refine lead, or to start small businesses. BC welcomed them grudgingly. Recounting the stories of individual Italian immigrants, celebrated author Lynne Bowen has crafted a loosely chronological narrative of the Italian settlement of BC. It's a story rife with discrimination and tragedy, with families torn apart when their men left Italy for more promising futures, but always there is a rich sense of community and a sense of pride. Here we meet Joseph Fontana, who incensed his fellow striking miners when he crossed their picket line near Ladysmith. We meet Sabina Teti, who ran a boarding house in VancouverÃs Italian district of Strathcona. We hear stories of the 53 Italians who were rounded up from BC and shipped off to Kananaskis internment camp for fear that they would form a fifth column in support of Mussolini. Through these stories, Bowen also reveals the Canadian immigration, labour, and multiculturalism issues of the time. Today, the BC Italian community is Canada's oldest by 50 years. Bowen has spent 10 years conducting interviews and combing through newspapers, government records and letters to write this definitive history. Whoever Gives Us Bread will appeal to the large Italian population in BC and across Canada as well as to readers of social history.
