Divided Together by Ilya V. Gaiduk,Ilʹi︠a︡ V. Gaĭduk Pdf

Divided Together studies US and Soviet policy toward the United Nations during the first two decades of the Cold War. It sheds new light on a series of key episodes, beginning with the prehistory of the UN, an institution that aimed to keep the Cold War cold. Gaiduk employs previously secret Soviet files on UN policy, greatly expanding the evidentiary basis for studying the world organization. His analysis of Soviet and US tactics and behavior, covering a series of international controversies over security and crisis resolution, reveals how the rivals tried to use the UN to gain leverage over each other during the institution's critical early years.

Divided We Fall by Alice M. Rivlin,Sheri Rivlin,Allan Rivlin Pdf

Partisan warfare and gridlock in Washington threaten to squander America’s opportunity to show the world that democracy can solve serious economic problems and ensure widely shared prosperity. Instead of working together to meet the challenges ahead—an aging work force, exploding inequality, climate change, rising debt—our elected leaders are sabotaging our economic future by blaming and demonizing each other in hopes of winning big in the next election. They are weakening America’s capacity for world leadership and the case for democracy here and abroad. Alice M. Rivlin, with decades of experience in economic policy making, argues that proven economic policies could lead to sustainable American prosperity and opportunity for all, but crafting them requires the tough, time-consuming work of consensus building and bipartisan negotiation. In a divided country with shifting majorities, major policies must have bipartisan buy-in and broad public support. Otherwise we will have either destabilizing swings in policy or total gridlock in the face of challenges looming at us. Rivlin believes that Americans can and must save our hyper-partisan politicians from themselves. She makes the case that on many practical economic issues the public is far less divided than partisan politicians and sensationalist media would have us believe. She draws attention to numerous hopeful efforts to bridge partisan and ideological divides in Washington, in state capitols and city governments, and communities around the country, and advocates a major national effort to enable citizens and future leaders to learn and practice the art of listening to each other and working together to find common ground. This book is a practical guide for Americans across the political spectrum who are agonizing over partisan warfare, incivility, and policy gridlock and looking for ways they can help to get our democratic policy process back on a constructive track before it is too late.

Divided Armies by Jason Lyall Pdf

How do armies fight and what makes them victorious on the modern battlefield? In Divided Armies, Jason Lyall challenges long-standing answers to this classic question by linking the fate of armies to their levels of inequality. Introducing the concept of military inequality, Lyall demonstrates how a state's prewar choices about the citizenship status of ethnic groups within its population determine subsequent battlefield performance. Treating certain ethnic groups as second-class citizens, either by subjecting them to state-sanctioned discrimination or, worse, violence, undermines interethnic trust, fuels grievances, and leads victimized soldiers to subvert military authorities once war begins. The higher an army's inequality, Lyall finds, the greater its rates of desertion, side-switching, casualties, and use of coercion to force soldiers to fight. In a sweeping historical investigation, Lyall draws on Project Mars, a new dataset of 250 conventional wars fought since 1800, to test this argument. Project Mars breaks with prior efforts by including overlooked non-Western wars while cataloguing new patterns of inequality and wartime conduct across hundreds of belligerents. Combining historical comparisons and statistical analysis, Lyall also marshals evidence from nine wars, ranging from the Eastern Fronts of World Wars I and II to less familiar wars in Africa and Central Asia, to illustrate inequality's effects. Sounding the alarm on the dangers of inequality for battlefield performance, Divided Armies offers important lessons about warfare over the past two centuries—and for wars still to come.

A Kingdom Divided Cannot Stand by Will Zimmer Pdf

A Kingdom Divided Cannot Stand explains the importance of Christians breaking through traditions and uniting as the body of Christ. It does not matter which church a Christian chooses to attend, because ultimately they are all members of the body of Christ (Christ's church). Manmade traditions can and will hinder the promises of God in a persons life. As the end of the age quickly approaches, it is becoming more important for Christs church to unite. Find out how current events line up with biblical prophecy and how close we are to the end of the age. A Kingdom Divided Cannot Stand will answer common questions such as: What will happen next? Why did Christ allude to the days of Lot and Noah when describing the end of the age? Is the Old Law still in effect today? Are Christians accountable to the Old Law or the New Law? What did Christ do when He fulfilled the Old Law? A Kingdom Divided Cannot Stand also includes a medically updated version of the body of Christ.

A House Divided by Isaac Arten,William Glass Pdf

It is hardly noteworthy in contemporary discourse when the phrase, "We'll just have to agree to disagree" actually means, "We plan never to speak to each other again." For members of Episcopal and other Anglican churches, however, the Anglican tradition's identity as a via media demands forthright engagement with difficult topics by Christians committed to remaining in prayerful relationship with each other. In the spring of 2013, Duke Divinity School's Anglican Episcopal House of Studies began a series of "fierce conversations" designed to expose seminary students to the profound and painful reality of ecclesial divisions in North American Anglicanism (revolving around issues of human sexuality, scriptural authority and interpretive practices, and church leadership) while cultivating skills for leading congregations to worship, pray, and serve in ways that contribute over time to the full, visible reconciliation of Episcopalians and other Anglicans in North America. This book presents this year of conversations as a way of inviting congregations to take up the challenge and joy of "fierce conversations" in their own common life.

Jinnah Proposed, Gandhi Disposed...Thus India Divided by Prafull Goradia,K.R. Phanda Pdf

The partition of India and the agonies associated with it are still alive in the memory of millions of people. Although the India-Pakistan Partition took place nearly seven decades ago, it is still a lingering reality. It is the indifferent attitude of leaders both from the Congress and the Muslim League that resulted in bifurcating the country. This is well made out from the writings of the leaders of the time. This indifference continued even after 1947. Kashmir got divided and it became a perpetual bone of contention. Sending terrorists across the border is Pakistan's spasmodic habit. Training Indian extremists in violence is its dedicated, continual process. The author affirms that many an unpleasant development would have been avoided had the leaders understood the issues properly and mobilized support from the Indian populace. But the leadership was cynical and failed in understanding the gravity of the situation. Personal interests and egos ruled the roost. However, a few lay Indians know how the partition took place. What was the need for it? Who played the spoilsport in creating Pakistan? This volume, for the better understanding of the readers, reproduces the views of Jinnah, Gandhi, Ambedkar, Rajendra Prasad and G.D. Khosla in this context. This book is a sincere attempt to portray the actual developments that had taken place associated with the Independence of the country and a few afterward results. The Indian government under Nehru failed in resolving many an issue, paving the way for numerous post-Independent challenges that are still continuing. Thus, this book should be an eye opener for the readers, unfurling their mind, grasping the reality in its absolute sense.
