Religion has power structures that require and justify its existence, spread its influence, and mask its collaboration with other power structures. Power, like religion, is in collaboration. Along this line, this book affirms that one could see and study the power structures and power relations of a religion in and through the missions of empires. Empires rise and roam with the blessings and protections of religious power structures (e.g., scriptures, theologies, interpretations, traditions) that in return carry, propagate and justify imperial agendas. Thus, to understand the relation between religion and power requires one to also study the relation between religion and empires. Christianity is the religion that receives the most deliberation in this book, with some attention to power structures and power relations in Hinduism and Buddhism. The cross-cultural and inter-national contributors share the conviction that something within each religion resists and subverts its power structures and collaborations. The authors discern and interrogate the involvements of religion with empires past and present, political and ideological, economic and customary, systemic and local. The upshot is that the book troubles religious teachings and practices that sustain, as well as profit from, empires.

The increasing demand for popular literary works has given impetus to the issue of quality and acceptability in translation. In specific cases where the novels to be translated include different wordplays, codes, and symbols, the problem of quality and acceptability has become more challenging for translators due to the significant impact of these language-specific components on the plot and the technical linguistic limitations. This book aims to show different methods for overcoming this challenge in translation by elaborating on the theoretical aspects of “creativity” in translation and by analyzing the dimensions of this creativity through the examples selected from Dan Brown’s bestseller thriller novels. The book consists of three chapters. The first chapter gives detailed information on popular literature, its specific characteristics, subgenres, translational methods for popular literature, and creativity in translation. The second chapter focuses on the theoretical aspects of the issue of “creativity” in the translation of popular literature. Finally, the third chapter elaborates on numerous examples of wordplays, symbols, and codes for which translators have used their creative skills in the translation process. The significance of the creative interventions of translators is concretely demonstrated through the analysis of these examples. The methods and the examples of creativity discussed here will show the way for future translators of popular literary works to overcome the problem of the “untranslatability” of wordplays, codes, and symbols. This volume painstakingly formulates a composite model of translation procedures that covers both linguistic and cultural aspects inherent in translation. The model is based on an integration of three classic taxonomies of translation procedures proposed by influential translation scholars, namely Vinay and Darbelnet (1995), Newmark (1988), and Dickins, Hervey and Higgins (2002/2016). The book combines these three taxonomies into an integrated model and extends it, effectively, to identify patterns of translation procedures and overall strategies in English-Kurdish translation of journalistic texts. The book is a breakthrough in the field of journalistic translation between the two languages. With a clear definition and exemplification of each translation procedure, the importance of the model is that it is replicable for future descriptive translation studies and can be carried out in other language pairs and on other genres. Moreover, the model is comprehensive in nature, and covers almost all translational changes and shifts that may occur in the translation process. Thus, this model of translation procedures transcends previous frameworks in such a way that prospective translation researchers will not need to go back to these older models of translation procedures.
