The Social Credit Movement had a Broad and significant impact on the social and political history of Alberta. A number of authors have examined this phenomenon, usually focusing on the economic and social conditions that influenced Social Credit's rise to power. Major Douglas and Alberta Social Credit Ideology, however, is the first work dedicated expressly to the intellectual history of the Social Credit government of the 1930s and 1940s. Bob Hesketh challenges us to revise previous thinking about Social Credit by placing new emphasis on the influence of Major C.H. Douglas's conspiracy-based ideology on the Aberhart and Manning governments. The author is the first to contend that Douglas's beliefs were strongly influenced by the infamous anti-Semitic book, The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion. Douglas believed that a Jewish financial conspiracy with the single goal of enslaving mankind was orchestrating world events. Hesketh analyses the shared ground between Douglas's conspiratorial thinking and the fundamentalism of Aberhart and Manning. He suggests that both Premiers understood and applied Douglas's teachings to a wide variety of government policies, from the famous monetary bills to numerous lesser known economic diversification initiatives. This book develops important new interpretations of Social Credit's behaviour as a movement, party, and government, providing an unprecedented focus on ideology. For years scholars have maintained that Social Credit was a protest on the part of small-scale farmers, who fought against their disadvantaged position in advanced capitalism by rejecting central Canada's control of the prairie region. Louis Even began to make Social Credit known in French Canada in 1935. In 1946, Louis Even published his marvellous book Sous le Signe de l'Abondance (In This Age of Plenty). The implementation of the principles expressed in this book would give peace and justice to the world. The clear and simple explanations make it easy for anyone to grasp Social Credit, even by people who have no prior knowledge of economics. Major Clifford Hugh Douglas, the founder of the Social Credit movement in the United Kingdom, asserted that Louis Even was the one who understood and expressed his thoughts the best. Fifty years later, in 1996, Louis Even's book was translated into English. In 1993, a translation into Polish was published and received a blessing from Pope John Paul II. The book is promoted by the Pilgrims of Saint Michael's Michael Journal out of Rougemont, Quebec, Canada - "a journal of Catholic patriots for the Social Credit monetary reform through the education of the population and not through political parties." In 1935, the provincial Alberta Social Credit party under William Aberhart won a landslide victory in the provincial elections, "on a platform of Christian leadership and reform of the monetary system - an alliance of God and Mammon." At the height of the Great Depression, in 1936, the Alberta legislature passed the Alberta Social Credit Acts to establish a Credit House and issue Alberta Credit in order to utilize "the unused capacity of the industries and people of the province of Alberta to produce wanted goods and services" and thus stimulate productive capacity that lay idle for lack of bank credit. At the "alarmed insistence of the chartered banks," writes Mallory, the liberal Dominion government in Ottawa under Prime Minister W.L. Mackenzie King referred certain parts of the legislation to the Supreme Court of Canada, rather than recommending disallowance to the Governor General.On March 4, 1938, the Supreme Court ruled that the power to create money and regulate banking was ultra vires (beyond the powers) of the provincial legislature of Alberta as its subject matter is embraced within section 91 of the British North America Act, the Constitution. The SCC's interesting reasons for judgment are reproduced in the Appendix of this book.

Although the fortunes of Social Credit in Canada have been well researched, a gap has existed in that no study has been made of the English origins of the movement. John L. Finlay fills that gap and also relates the movement to the wider currents of twentieth-century intellectual development. His purpose is primarily to explain the appeal of Social Credit rather than to present its history, although he certainly provides a wealth of interesting information and references for the historian. Having established the background and traced the different but overlapping critiques of orthodoxy that eventually fed into the Social Credit case, the author establishes that case, seeking to defend it against some of the unfair attacks made upon it and linking it to the personality of its founder, Major C. H. Douglas. He analyses the responses to Social Credit of well-known intellectuals, politicians, and clergymen and presents in vivid biographical sketches many of the "underground" political thinkers of whom little has hitherto been written. He suggests that a common thread of quasi anarchism has run through the movement and indicates that, far from being reactionary, the doctrine may in fact be very up to date.

By examining Social Credit's anti-Semitic propaganda and the reaction of the Canadian Jewish Congress, Stingel details their mutual antagonism and explores why Congress was unable to stop Social Credit's blatant defamation. She argues that Congress's ineffective response was part of a broader problem in which passivity and a belief in "quiet diplomacy" undermined many of its efforts to combat intolerance.
