Dredging in Coastal Waters by D. Eisma Pdf

The varied use of dredgers has led to the development of a variety of dredger types, from small ones appropriate to modest inshore projects, to very large sea-going dredgers for large-scale projects calling for the storage of dredged material within the ship. This book, which is the first book dedicated to dredging and its environmental impact in the widest sense, contains chapters on dredging operations in the Netherlands, Belgium, the UK, Spain, the US, China and Singapore. Additional chapters discuss more general aspects such as dredging techniques, monitoring of dredging operations, and the prospects of dredging in a changing environment. As well as providing information on dredging activities in different areas, it gives an insight into the activities and problems (environmental or other) involved in modern dredging. It will be of interest to professionals and students alike.

Dredging Coastal Ports by National Research Council,Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences,Commission on Engineering and Technical Systems,Marine Board Pdf

Are the nation's ports adequate for our present and future needs? This volume points out that no significant new deep-water construction has occurred for a decade, and provides the information and analysis needed to goad the ports and the federal government into action. The book asks three questions: Is additional port construction and maintenance dredging needed now or over the next 20 years? What would prevent dredging if it is needed? What alternatives could make additional dredging possible? The book identifies several problems in dredging ports, including the long interval between a decision to deepen a port and the time the alterations are complete. The United States needs to speed port construction to meet changing needs, and the committee recommends that we prepare for future needs by dredging now.

Excerpt from Impacts of Navigational Dredging on Fish and Wildlife: A Literature Review Literature about. The impacts of navigational dredging (n1 fistn other aquatic biota, and wildlife is reviewed. Also included are types of dredg ing 'equipment, characteristics of dredged material, evaluation of dredged material pollution potential, and habitat development and enhancement opportunities arising from dredged material disposal. The review contains a brief discussion of the state of knowledge and refers the reader to pertinent literature for' additional information. The discussions about, impacts and habitat development are divided into Coastal Waters (including disposal in estuarine, continental shelf, and deep ocean waters) and Rivers. A limited discussion of the Great Lakes is included as an Appendix. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Dredged Material Isolation on the Abyssal Seafloor by Philip J. Valent,David K. Young Pdf

This report is the result of an examination of the feasibility of isolating contaminated dredged material on the abyssal seafloor. The focus is on the technical and environmental factors that constrain the considerations of feasibility. The sources of the materials are assumed to be in U.S. coastal waters. A thorough conceptual design of a dredging to abyssal deposition system is analyzed with regard to each subsystem and to the entire operational concept. These subsystems include: (1) a low leakage dredge, (2) equipment for material handling and loading into geosynthetic fabric containers (GFCs), (3) the barge for transport and navigation, and (4) the subsystem for releasing the GFCs to sink to the abyssal seafloor isolation site. Particular consideration is given to the exclusion of dredged material from the ocean's productive zone in the upper 1000 m; this exclusion requires highly stable, reliable navigation and seakeeping by the barge transporter and control of the configuration of GFCs within it. New theoretical models and previous empirical results are used to predict GFC motion through the water column and response to impact on the abyssal seafloor, including the case of potential release of contaminated, turbid water at impact. A geochemical model of the temporal and spatial evolution of the post-deposition geochemistry of the water column, the GFC contents and the sediments below is developed and analyzed; the results show that release of metals into the ocean waters would be insignificant. A model of the biological impacts of the introduction of dredged material in the abyssal environment is used to infer that: (1) biological diversity in the vicinity of the deposition site will be diminished, (2) biomass will be increased by dominance of a few fast growing, opportunistic benthic species, and (3) concentrations of trace elements and organic contgt\h1

Beach and Nearshore Placement of Material Dredged from Federally Authorized Navigation Projects by L. Vallianos Pdf

This report examines four aspects of the use of dredged material by the Corps of Engineers for the purposes of beach nourishment and/or erosion control. These were: (a) the policies and authorities used in the placement of dredged material; (b) factors which affect the feasibility of dredged material placement; (c) the extent to which the Corps is currently using dredged material for beach nourishment and/or erosion control; and (d) procedures used to exploit or promote such uses of dredged material.

Environmental Aspects of Dredging by R. N. Bray Pdf

Expanding a port, deepening a navigation channel or creating new land for development, introduces changes to our physical, social, economic and political environment. Changes may result from events during the construction process, or relate to the nature of the completed structure. Changes can be positive or negative, short-term or long-term, and may affect the immediate vicinity of the project or a larger geographical area. Predicting and assessing all possible effects of a planned dredging activity in a scientifically-sound and reliable manner is essential, so that appropriate control measures can be taken to avoid or mitigate unwelcome impacts. This book provides guidance for a complete holistic environmental evaluation procedure and for the design and implementation of environmental control measures. The book is of particular interest to engineers, government agencies and port authorities, as well as civil engineering consultants and contractors involved in planning and designing dredging, maritime infrastructure and fluvial projects.

Beach Nourishment Techniques ; Report 1 by Thomas W. Richardson Pdf

This report presents the results of the first two phases of a research project aimed at developing new dredging systems for beach nourishment from offshore sources. As an introduction to the subject matter, the current situation in the United States regarding beach nourishment and offshore dredging equipment is outlined. Example nourishment projects accomplished and the range of equipment used to date. Next, the engineering considerations involved in selecting an optimum nourishment system for a particular project or project category are presented, and their effects on system characteristics are discussed. The main body of the report presents the results of an investigation into equipment suitable for offshore nourishment work. Approximately 50 examples are described illustrating dredge types, pipelines, connections, and miscellaneous pieces of equipment. The examples are divided into the main categories 'existing' and 'proposed' and subdivided according to design concept. The final portion of the report consists of the selection of certain equipment subcategories for further consideration and the construction of possible offshore nourishment systems using this selected equipment. A logic network is presented outlining these possible systems, and their projected uses are discussed. Future phases of the research project are outlined. The report includes approximately 45 illustrations and 85 references directly related to offshore dredging and beach nourishment. (Author).
