Context and Learning by P. Balsam,A. Tomie Pdf
First published in 1984. The effects of contextual stimuli on the performance of conditioned behaviors have recently become the object of intense theoretical and empirical scrutiny. This book presents the work of researchers who have attempted to characterize the role of context in learning through direct experimental manipulation of these stimuli. Their work reveals that context has important and systematic effects upon the learning and performance of conditioned responses. The roles played by context are diverse and the problems confronted in attempting to evaluate and differentiate contextual functions are formidable. These considerations are discussed in the introductory chapter. The remaining chapters present an analysis of the role of context in Pavlovian, operant, and discrimination learning paradigms.

Methods in Behavioral Pharmacology by F. van Haaren Pdf
Methods in Behavioral Pharmacology is unique in offering a complete description and critical evaluation of most, if not all, methods available to study the effects of drugs on behavior. It stands apart in that it is not limited to the analysis of a particular class of pharmacological agents in a limited number of paradigms. Methods in Behavioral Pharmacology covers all paradigms without reference to specific pharmacological compounds. The book provides a comprehensive overview of the methodology used to study the behavioral effects of legal and illegal drugs. It also provides an in-depth presentation of dependent variables, their quantification and a critical evaluation of their advantages and disadvantages. An excellent work, contributed to by well-known experts in the different fields of behavioral pharmacology.

The Behavioral Neuroscience of Drug Discrimination by Joseph H. Porter,Adam J. Prus Pdf
The goal for this volume is to provide an up-to-date review of the discriminative stimulus properties of major psychoactive drug classes with an emphasis on how this paradigm enhances our understanding of these drugs and how these findings translate from animals to humans. The drug discrimination paradigm applies to both drugs of abuse and drugs for treating mental illnesses, and research from these studies has provided immense translational value for learning about the mechanisms responsible for drug effects in humans.

The Expression of Knowledge by Robert L. Isaacson,Norman E. Spear Pdf
What we know about the world and its opportunities limits what we do. If we do not know that there is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, we will not follow it. If we do not know that a desert cactus contains water, we will not cut into it for sustenance. Often, however, we do know things about the world and yet the knowledge does not seem to be reflected in behavior. Explaining this fact simply in terms of inadequate motivation for expression or incomplete memory for the important in formation does not really add much to our understanding. The ex pression of knowledge can be interrupted in very special ways by a variety of more specific conditions-fatigue, sources of forgetting that may include failure of memory retrieval, emotion, and various dysfunc tions of brain and body systems-that are not satisfactorily incorporated by any current theories of motivation or memory. Also, a dissociation between knowledge and its expression can take the form of applying knowledge without apparent awareness of this action, a phenomenon that requires complicated assumptions for explanation in terms of either motivation or memory. Dissociations between knowledge and action may be striking. After driving home on a familiar route we may not be able to report whether the last three traffic lights were red or green; yet we must have re sponded appropriately to them.

Experimental Analysis of Behavior by I.H. Iversen,K.A. Lattal Pdf
This volume is dedicated to the late B.F. Skinner as a tribute to his pioneering work on the Experimental Analysis of Behavior. This science that he initiated studies the behavior of individual organisms under laboratory conditions. The volume describes a broad collection of representative and effective research techniques in the Experimental Analysis of Behavior; techniques derived solely from infrahuman subjects, which have been selected both for their utility in behavior analysis and for their potential value in expanding the use of behavior analysis in the neurosciences. By bringing together under one cover the expertise of individual authors regarding techniques based on their particular laboratory experiences, the book provides an informative and practical source of methods and techniques for those practising or interested in Experimental Analysis of Behaviour.

Drugs, Neurotransmitters, and Behavior by Leslie L. Iversen,Susan D. Iversen,Solomon H. Snyder Pdf
Volume 18 of the Handbook of Psychopharmacology represents the first of a series of volumes intended to bring earlier sections of the work up to date. Volumes 7, 8, and 9, published in 1977 and 1978, dealt with principles of behavior, drugs and neurotransmitters, and neuroanatomy. In subsequent volumes dedicated to these issues, a mixture of topics will be covered in a given volume, covering both advances in basic knowledge in these three areas of the subject and reviews of theoretical and meth odological issues deemed to be of particular relevance at present. Drug Discrimination by Richard A. Glennon,Richard Young Pdf
Drug discrimination: a practical guide to its contributions to the invention of new chemical entities and evaluations of new or known pharmacological agents Drug discrimination can be described as a "drug detection" procedure that uses a pharmacologically active agent as the subjective stimulus. Although the procedure does require some effort to implement, it can be an extremely important tool for understanding drug action. Whereas medicinal chemists should come to learn the types of information that drug discrimination studies can offer, pharmacologists and psychologists might come to realize how medicinal chemists can apply the types of information that the paradigm routinely provides. Drug Discrimination: Applications to Medicinal Chemistry and Drug Studies provides in-depth analyses of the nature and use of drugs as discriminative stimuli and bridges some of the numerous gaps between medicinal chemistry, pharmacology, and psychology. Stressing the practical aspects of drug discrimination, including types of procedures, study design, data, and interpretation, the book details the advantages and limitations of drug discrimination studies versus other pharmacologic evaluations. Practical information from leading researchers in the field addresses specific topics and techniques that are of interest in drug discovery, evaluation, and development. A groundbreaking new guide to the applications of drug discrimination studies for medicinal chemistry and neuroscience, Drug Discrimination is essential for any scientist, researcher, or student whose interests involve the design, development, and/or action of drugs acting at the level of the central nervous system.

Marijuana/Cannabinoids by Laura L. Murphy,Andrzej Bartke Pdf
First Published in 1992, Marijuana/Cannabinoids: Neurophysiology and Neurobiology is the first book to specifically address the effects of marijuana and cannabinoids on the physiology and behavior of the brain. The book discusses the dramatic effects of marijuana use on brain chemistry, pharmacology, and behavior. It also examines the isolation of natural cannabinoids and the synthesis of new cannabinoid-like compounds that have been important in research leading to the discovery and function of the cannabinoid receptor in the brain. Up-to-date research findings and in-depth reviews on marijuana and cannabinoids in the brain and their potential therapeutic value make Marijuana/Cannabinoids: Neurophysiology and Neurobiology essential for students, practitioners, and researchers involved in researching drugs of abuse.
