Indian Old-man Stories by Frank Bird Linderman Pdf

The Indians of the northwestern plains always laughed at the tales about Old-man, heard around the lodge fire in the wintertime after sunset. For a powerful character, he was comically flawed. Old-man made the world but sometimes forgot the names of things. Victim and victimizer, he seemed closer to common experience than the awesome god Manitou. Frank B. Linderman thought Old-man was, under different names, a god for many Indian communities. ø These stories?collected from Chippewa and Cree elders and first published in 1920?are full of wonder at the way things are. Why children lose their teeth, why eyesight fails with age, why dogs howl at night, why some animals wear camouflage?these and other mysteries, large and small, are made vividly sensible.

My Folks Grew Up in the '80s by Beck Feiner,Robin Feiner Pdf

TRAVEL BACK IN TIME TO THE ERA NO-ONE HAS EVER FORGOTTEN - THE 80s - BECAUSE THOSE OUTFITS WERE SO RAD YOU HAD TO WEAR SHADES. Welcome to the 1980s. Mum and dad have described it to me, and it was totally whack. It was a time when crimped hair and perms were cool, kids listened to cassette tapes, thought dancing on your head was the ultimate, and synth pop ruled the school. It makes no sense to me of course, but it looked kinda fun, don't you think? My Folks Grew Up in the '80s is a stroll down memory lane for the kidz who grew up then, and a hilarious chance to share the decade's downright weirdness with a whole new generation.

There’s A Devil In The Drum [Illustrated Edition] by Lt.-Colonel John Frederick Lucy Pdf

Includes the First World War Illustrations Pack – 73 battle plans and diagrams and 198 photos “A classic. Lucy enlisted, with his brother in the RIR 1912, 2nd Bn. in France & gives a very fine account of the 1914-1915 campaign. His brother was killed at the Aisne & Lucy was eventually sent home for a rest: “My leave... was a nightmare. My sleep was broken & full of voices & the noises of war. The voices were those of officers & men who were dead... One morning was discovered standing up in bed facing a wall ready to repel an imaginary dawn attack.” Lucy was commissioned, returned to his bn. and fought at 3rd Ypres & Cambrai until wounded. John Lucy, an Irishman from Cork, enlisted in an Ulster regiment, The Royal Irish Rifles, with his younger brother in January 1912, and after six months at the Depot they joined the 2nd Bn in Dover. Subsequently they moved to Tidworth where the battalion was on 4 August 1914, in 7th Bde 3rd Division; ten days later they were in France. There follow brilliant accounts of Mons, Le Cateau and the retreat to the Marne, the turn of the tide and the Battle of the Aisne where his brother was killed. The battalion was involved in desperate fighting in front of Neuve Chapelle in October 1914, losing 181 killed in four days and virtually ceasing to exist, reduced to two officers and 46 men. Brought up to strength it suffered the same fate at First Ypres. This is a superb book, one of the best written by a ‘ranker’, all the better for being one of the very few to describe those early battles of 1914. As a critic wrote in 1938, ‘it is easily the best [war book] written by an Irishman’ - arguably still true. A great bonus is the description of life in the ranks in that long long ago just before the Great War.”-Print ed.

Crazy Horse by Jon Sterngass Pdf

The true life of Crazy Horse is plagued with questions. He did not leave any letters or diaries nor are there any records of speeches he made. Most notably, it is still unclear whether his death was an accident or a murder. Nevertheless, Crazy Horse is considered a gripping symbol of freedom, dignity, and the American West. He was the unfathomable leader for the Lakota tribe and was looked upon for protection by his people. But as whites invaded the Lakota lands and the buffalo herds shrank, many Lakota were forced to relocate to reservations. But not all, for Crazy Horse was determined to fight for his home. Rejecting the reservation system and negotiations with the white invaders, he guided the Lakota in two of the most monumental defeats ever suffered by the US Army: the Fetterman Fight in 1866, and the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876, which was fought against the infamous General George Armstrong Custer. Over twenty illustrations and photographs help kids better understand this crucial figure and pivotal moment in nineteenth-century American history. Crazy Horse, part of the Wild West for Kids series, is a must-read for any young historian hoping to learn about a mysterious man who played an influential role in the Native American battles in the West.

Born to Drum by Tony Barrell Pdf

“An engaging journey into the wild and wonderful world of drumming.”—CLEM BURKE, Blondie To have a great band you need a great drummer. For the first time, Tony Barrell shines a long-overdue spotlight on these musicians, offering an exciting look into their world, their art, and their personalities. In Born to Drum, he interviews some of the most famous, revered, and influential drummers of our time—including Chad Smith, Ginger Baker, Clem Burke, Sheila E., Phil Collins, Nick Mason, Patty Schemel, Butch Vig, and Omar Hakim—who share astonishing truths about their work and lives. He investigates the stories of late, great drummers such as Keith Moon and John Bonham, analyzes many of the greatest drum tracks ever recorded, and introduces us to the world’s fastest and loudest drummers, as well as the first musician to pilot a “flying drum kit” onstage. Filled with fascinating insights into the trade and little-known details about the greats, Born to Drum elevates drummers and their achievements to their rightful place in music lore and pop culture. “As Born to Drum proves, there’s a lot more to be told about drums and drumming than the Rolls-Royce in the swimming pool and the pyro beneath the bass drum.”—NICK MASON, Pink Floyd “Everyone should read this book—especially if you’re not a drummer. A great insight into a great sport.”—Joey Kramer, Aerosmith
