Lake Arrowhead Architecture by Diane Wilk Pdf

Located in the mountains above San Bernardino is a surprising enclave of significant architecture built by some of the region's most important architects. The Lake Arrowhead area was long a getaway for the rich and famous, who brought many of the architects they used down the mountain to design their hidden hideaways on their own private lake. Things have changed since the golden age of building, and the area, while still private, is enjoyed by a far broader sector of the population. Yet the legacy of that early architecture and the transformation into a modern resort community is still intact and enjoyed by new generations of mountain residents. This book explores the area's architecture from its early history as a logging and cattle ranching community to its flourishing as a secret hideaway for the Hollywood crowd to its current status as a mountain resort for Southern Californians.

Transformation of a Common Man by James E. Frazier Pdf

From Time Beyond all time, he came. From the misty-fire of Light and Sound, he descended into Form. I AM, I AM, his name thundered through the infinite void. Demons stirred. Ancient gods of the earth, and angels of heaven awoke to peer through misty veils of eternity. The time of reaping had come to God's last creation, to man on earth, to the blue-white world of water, to the Garden planet. Shining angels shook moist, golden wings. Demons rattled dry curses from leathery throats. Giants, sylphs and avatars all wanted in the game. The time has come again for the Host. From the white-haired Old Man flowed a joyous song for all to hear, "Let the Play of Life begin. Let the Play of Life begin."

An Archaeology of Skill by Maikel H.G. Kuijpers Pdf

Material is the mother of innovation and it is through skill that innovations are brought about. This core thesis that is developed in this book identifies skill as the linchpin of – and missing link between – studies on craft, creativity, innovation, and material culture. Through a detailed study of early bronze age axes the question is tackled of what it involves to be skilled, providing an evidence based argument about levels of skill. The unique contribution of this work is that it lays out a theoretical framework and methodology through which an empirical analysis of skill is achievable. A specific chaîne opératoire for metal axes is used that compares not only what techniques were used, but also how they were applied. A large corpus of axes is compared in terms of what skills and attention were given at the different stages of their production. The ideas developed in this book are of interest to the emerging trend of ‘material thinking’ in the human and social sciences. At the same time, it looks towards and augments the development in craft-studies, recognising the many different aspects of craft in contemporary and past societies, and the particular relationship that craftspeople have with their material. Drawing together these two distinct fields of research will stimulate (re)thinking of how to integrate production with discussions of other aspects of object biographies, and how we link arguments about value to social models.

A Widening Sphere by Philip N. Alexander Pdf

How MIT's first nine presidents helped transform the Institute from a small technical school into a major research university. MIT was founded in 1861 as a polytechnic institute in Boston's Back Bay, overshadowed by its neighbor across the Charles River, Harvard University. Harvard offered a classical education to young men of America's ruling class; the early MIT trained men (and a few women) from all parts of society as engineers for the nation's burgeoning industries. Over the years, MIT expanded its mission and ventured into other fields—pure science, social science, the humanities—and established itself in Cambridge as Harvard's enduring rival. In A Widening Sphere, Philip Alexander traces MIT's evolution from polytechnic to major research institution through the lives of its first nine presidents, exploring how the ideas, outlook, approach, and personality of each shaped the school's intellectual and social cultures. Alexander describes, among otherthings, the political skill and entrepreneurial spirit of founder and first president, William Rogers; institutional growing pains under John Runkle; Francis Walker's campaign to broaden the curriculum, especially in the social sciences, and to recruit first-rate faculty; James Crafts, whose heart lay in research, not administration; Henry Pritchett's thwarted effort to merge with Harvard (after which he decamped to the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching); Richard Maclaurin's successful strategy to move the institute to Cambridge, after considering other sites (including a golfclub in Brighton); the brilliant, progressive Ernest Nichols, who succumbed to chronic illness and barely held office; Samuel Stratton's push towards a global perspective; and Karl Compton's vision for a new kind of Institute—a university polarized around science and technology. Through these interlocking yet independent portraits, Alexander reveals the inner workings of a complex and dynamic community of innovators.
