Durability of Reinforced Concrete from Composition to Protection by Carmen Andrade,Joost Gulikers,Rob Polder Pdf

This book presents key advances in the modeling of reinforcement corrosion and concrete durability. It also examines various further aspects of reinforcement corrosion and concrete durability, striking a balance between modeling and testing. Particular attention is paid to innovative treatments for avoiding deterioration, and to methods for modeling performance in a real environment. Some basic aspects related to non-destructive testing techniques are also discussed. Deterioration-related topics addressed in the book include the basis for modeling alkali-silica reactions, chloride diffusion and the development of concrete microstructure; measurement-related topics include cathodic protection, polarization resistance and resistivity. A combined approach using the AFM technique and polarization measurements is examined, and the relation between cracking and corrosion and the treatment of concrete with hydrophobes or innovative products such as hydrotalcite is also discussed.

Durability of Reinforced Concrete Structures by Paul Chess,Warren Green Pdf

Reinforced concrete structures corrode as they age, with significant financial implications, but it is not immediately clear why some are more durable than others. This book looks at the mechanisms for corrosion and how corrosion engineering can be used for these problems to be minimized in future projects. Several different examples of reinforced concrete structures with corrosion problems are described and the various life enhancement solutions considered and applied are discussed. The book includes a chapter on the effectiveness of corrosion monitoring techniques and questions why the reality is at odds with current theory and standards. Specialist contractors, consultants and owners of corrosion damaged structures will find this an extremely useful resource. It will also be a valuable reference for students at postgraduate level.

Service Life and Durability of Reinforced Concrete Structures by Carmen Andrade,Joost Gulikers,Elisabeth Marie-Victoire Pdf

This volume contains the proceedings of the 8th International PhD Student Workshop on Service Life and Durability of Reinforced Concrete Structures that was held in Marne-la-Vallée, France, on September the 26th and 27th 2016. Topics discussed in the book are related to durability performance of reinforced concrete, service life modelling, prevention, protection and repair. Reinforced concrete structures may prove to be very durable, however, their gradual degradation over time impairing both serviceability and structural safety is still a matter of great practical concern in view of the large economic consequences for assessment, maintenance and repair. Corrosion of steel reinforcement is considered to be the most detrimental process responsible for structural deterioration. Many studies are in progress to develop a comprehensive engineering approach for assessment of the initiation and the propagation period of corrosion in both uncracked and cracked concrete. Modelling of chloride penetration and carbonation has attracted a great deal of attention in recent years, however, there is still much debate on several essential aspects such as the chloride threshold level. ASR, and acid, sulphate and frost attack and other mechanisms remain important areas of study. In addition, the interaction between different degradation mechanisms requires further understanding. The worskhop was organised under the auspices of RILEM EAC (Educational Activities Committee), with the aim to bring together young researchers in the field of durability of concrete.

Fundamentals of Durable Reinforced Concrete by Mark G. Richardson Pdf

Durability failures in reinforced concrete structures are wasteful of resources and energy. The introduction to practice of European Standard EN 206-1 represents a significant shift in emphasis on the need to explicitly consider each potential durability threat when specifying and producing concrete. Fundamentals of Durable Reinforced Concrete presents the fundamental aspects of concrete durability including reinforcement corrosion, carbonation, chloride ingress, alkali-aggregate reaction, freeze/thaw damage, sulphate attack, chemical attack, cracking, abrasion and weathering. The background to the durability exposure classes in EN 206-1 is also explained. Future directions in performance-based specifications and mathematical modelling of degradation are presented. This book will be of particular interest to specifiers applying the principles of the new European Standard EN 206-1 for the first time, to postgraduate researchers in mathematical modelling of degradation mechanisms, to undergraduates of engineering, architecture and building technology, and students of advanced concrete technology who require a concise source of reference on concrete durability.

This Digest is in three Parts. Part 1 examines the durability of steel in concrete. With Part 2 on investigation and assessment, and Part 3 on protection and remedial work, it sets out the basic principles for all those concerned with the design and maintenance of durable concrete structures: owners, tenants on repairing leases, architects, surveyors, engineers, material scientists and contractors. It also examines existing standards of construction and the lessons learned from the investigation of cases of corrosion in concrete. This part of the Digest, Part 1, explains the physical, chemical and electrochemical processes involved in the deterioration of reinforced concrete by corrosion; it summarises the mechanisms underlying protection, considers issues associated with the durability management of existing structures, and reviews best practice in designing and specifying reinforced and prestressed concrete for new structures to achieve durable whole-life performance. Part 2 considers how corrosion-induced deterioration in existing steel reinforced concrete structures is assessed and diagnosed. Part 3 describes the repair and protection of concrete structures subject to corrosion damage, or which are expected to need measures to minimise future damage or deterioration. Concrete durability is an area which is undergoing rapid technical development and change; this Digest describes future developments that are expected to have a major influence on the approaches and methodologies in this field. Digests 263, 264 and 265 are withdrawn.

Concrete Permeability and Durability Performance by Roberto J. Torrent,Rui D. Neves,Kei-ichi Imamoto Pdf

Durability and service life design of concrete constructions have considerable socio-economic and environmental consequences, in which the permeability of concrete to aggressive intruders plays a vital role. Concrete Permeability and Durability Performance provides deep insight into the permeability of concrete, moving from theory to practice, and presents over 20 real cases, such as Tokyo’s Museum of Western Art, Port of Miami Tunnel and Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao sea-link, including field tests in the Antarctic and Atacama Desert. It stresses the importance of site testing for a realistic durability assessment and details the "Torrent Method" for non-destructive measurement of air-permeability. It also delivers answers for some vexing questions: Should the coefficient of permeability be expressed in m2 or m/s? How to get a "mean" pore radius of concrete from gas-permeability tests? Why should permeability preferably be measured on site? How can service life of reinforced concrete structures be predicted by site testing of gas-permeability and cover thickness? Practitioners will find stimulating examples on how to predict the coming service life of new structures and the remaining life of existing structures, based on site testing of air-permeability and cover thickness. Researchers will value theoretical principles, testing methods, as well as how test results reflect the influence of concrete mix composition and processing.

Performance-Based Specifications and Control of Concrete Durability by Hans Beushausen,Luis Fernandez Luco Pdf

This work gives an overview of significant research from recent years concerning performance-based design and quality control for concrete durability and its implementation. In engineering practice, performance approaches are often still used in combination with prescriptive requirements. This is largely because, for most durability test methods, sufficient practical experience still has to be gained before engineers and owners are prepared to fully rely on them. This book, compiled by RILEM TC 230-PSC, is intended to assist efforts to successfully build the foundation for the full implementation of performance-based approaches through the exchange of relevant knowledge and experience between researchers and practitioners worldwide.

The Durability of Steel in Concrete by Anonim Pdf

The tensile properties of concrete were improved in the middle of the last century when reinforcing steel was first used. Since then, the practice has developed to such an extent that reinforced concrete is now one of the major structural materials available to the construction industry. In general, it has proved successful for both structural performance and durability. As an example of the good long-term performance of reinforced concrete, a warehouse (Fig 1), erected in 1900, was still in good condition when examined in 1979, there being little evidence of cracking or spalling associated with reinforcement corrosion. There are, however, examples of early failure of concrete units as a result of premature reinforcement corrosion (Figs 2 and 3). The reasons for this variability are many; this digest, the first of three parts, outlines the main factors controlling the durability of steel in concrete made with ordinary Portland cement to BS 12. It considers the protection to steel provided by the concrete and the mechanisms which cause this protection to be lost leading to corrosion of the reinforcement. The second part describes the diagnosis of concrete failure and the structural assessment necessary as a result of corrosion. Emphasis is placed on the need for a thorough understanding of the mechanism responsible for deterioration, especially when assessing the extent of further disruption or choosing an appropriate repair technique. The third part considers materials and methods of repair.
