Démocratie(s), Parlementarismes(s) et légitimité(s) / Democracy(ies),Parliamentarism(s) and legitimacy(ies) by Nadim Fahrat,Philippe Poirier Pdf

Degrees of European Belonging by Élisabeth Le Pdf

While we tend to divide the world into Us and Them, a number of grey nuances exist beyond this white and black distinction. The purpose of this book is to address the fuzzy areas between Us and Them through the study of European belonging as it is represented in the French elite daily, Le Monde. Corpora collected from 2014 to 2017 are used for case studies in the framework of Discourse Analysis to look at the use of “Europe” in headlines, and the representation of the United Kingdom, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Ukraine, Belarus, and Turkey. The combination of these case studies allows to present a conceptual framework for the representation of Europe by Le Monde. However, beyond the study of what belonging to Europe means for Le Monde, this book is about the legitimacy of being “in-between”, i.e. belonging neither totally to Us nor to Them.

Assemblee Nationale, Bundestag and the European Union by Anja Thomas Pdf

The growing importance of national parliaments is one feature of the stronger differentiation within the EU. Habermasian expectations of an increasing consensus on political norms seem to be invalidated by current events. In her book, in which she draws on her award-winning PhD thesis, Anja Thomas makes an important theoretical and empirical contribution to our understanding of the social causes of this development. Analysing EU affairs in the Assemblee nationale and Bundestag since 1979, she uncovers a paradox: increasing experience with the EU leads to national institutions growing in importance for MPs discourse on the role of parliaments in the EU. Revisiting social theory, in particular Max Webers old institutionalism, the author presents a new model that explains this phenomenon. This book should be read by students of both parliaments in the EU and European integration processes.

Socialist and Social Democratic parties leave few political observers and citizens indifferent. For several years, a certain number of actors on the political scene have presented it as a political family in crisis, lacking in imagination and dynamism, incapable of renewal and doomed to fade into insignificance. Others, on the contrary, describe it as a grouping with a promising, even brilliant future. This book does not set out to confirm either of those two visions. Its aim is to analyse in-depth the transformations which are affecting, at the current time, the different aspects of Social Democracy: new organisational models, changes in political and electoral performance, changing relations with the trade unions and civil society associations, reactions to the emergence of new political rivais and new values, new ideological trends and political programmes, etc. For the first time, the analysis does not concern exclusively Western Europe, but also deals with the Social Democratic parties of the consolidated democracies and the organisations that claim to be part of democratic socialism in Central and Eastern Europe, and highlights the specific characteristics and points in common. At the dawn of the 21st century, it is therefore the challenges and the different responses to those challenges that are analysed by several of the leading European specialists in Social Democratic parties in Europe.

Rule of Law, Common Values, and Illiberal Constitutionalism by Tímea Drinóczi,Agnieszka Bień-Kacała Pdf

This book challenges the idea that the Rule of Law is still a universal European value given its relatively rapid deterioration in Hungary and Poland, and the apparent inability of the European institutions to adequately address the illiberalization of these Member States. The book begins from the general presumption that the Rule of Law, since its emergence, has been a universal European value, a political ideal and legal conception. It also acknowledges that the EU has been struggling in the area of value enforcement, even if the necessary mechanisms are available and, given an innovative outlook and more political commitment, could be successfully used. The authors appreciate the different approaches toward the Rule of Law, both as a concept and as a measurable indicator, and while addressing the core question of the volume, widely rely on them. Ultimately, the book provides a snapshot of how the Rule of Law ideal has been dismantled and offers a theory of the Rule of Law in illiberal constitutionalism. It discusses why voters keep illiberal populist leaders in power when they are undeniably acting contrary to the Rule of Law ideal. The book will be of interest to academics and researchers engaged with the foundational questions of constitutionalism. The structure and nature of the subject matter covered ensure that the book will be a useful addition for comparative and national constitutional law classes. It will also appeal to legal practitioners wondering about the boundaries of the Rule of Law.

Socialism in Georgian Colors by Stephen F. Jones Pdf

Georgian social democracy was the most successful social democratic movement in Russia. Despite its size, it produced many of the leading revolutionaries of 1917. In the first of two volumes, Jones writes the history of this movement, which represented one of the earliest examples of European social democracy at the turn of the 20th century.

Ideologies in Quebec by Denis Moniere Pdf

In the years since 1960, Quebec has been transformed by the momentum of the Quiet Revolution and the social and economic impact of modernization. Historians, social scientists, and other commentators have been prompted to take a fresh look at the question of Quebec's future as a society -- and to attempt a scientific response. The last two decades have seen unprecedented development in the social sciences in the province. Professor Moniere brings a focus to Quebec's evolution by studying its ideologies. He locates them in their dynamic economic and historical contexts from the French regime to the present. In so doing, he reveals their relationships to social classes. With few exceptions, the history of ideologies is the history of the ideas of the ruling class. Moniere stresses material on the labour movement in order to compensate for this tendency, but takes care not to identify any particular ideology with the whole of Quebecois society. His choice of time periods and themes, and of the men and movements by which ideas were spared, highlights the economic and political liberation of Quebec labour at work throughout Quebec's history, as well as the ways in which this class has been blocked. This book brings scholarship on ideologies to the fore, opening up the collective memory and putting today's problems in perspective. It is a provocative presentation offering me an important insight into how the radical strain views itself and the future of Quebec and the country. It is of particular interest to political scientists and to all interested in the evolution of Canadian society.

Democracy in the Contemporary State by Frank Bealey Pdf

What is the place of democracy is the world today? How would an ideal democracy operate, and what might this imply for people's values and their social and economic systems? In this book Frank Bealey assesses the contemporary condition of democracy, treating it as a decision-making procedure based on certain personal civic freedoms and supported by the rule of law. The theory of democracy as a participatory process in which governments are responsible to the governedis examined in the light of present-day policy-making and the exercise of power in the comparatively small number of states we call democracies. Professor Bealey's study includes review of a relatively neglected topic: the impact of leadership on democracy. Although examples are taken from the United Kingdom, other democracies are frequently quoted to illustrate all these themes.
