The forests of the Southern United States were little influenced by man until the mid-19th century when they become the focus of an early export lumber business. Longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.) was the choice species due to its straightness and self pruning that produced high quality lumber and high resin content that limited decay and insect attack. The South's original longleaf pine dominated forest is estimated at 90 million acres. As the supply of virgin stands began to decline in the Carolinas around 1860, harvesting gradually moved south and west and by the early 1900s was concentrated in the West Gulf Region. The introduction of railroad logging increased the efficiency to the point that insufficient long leaf trees remained uncut to provide for regeneration.

Based on archival material and interviews with previous employees, this document traces the history of research within the B.C. Forest Service from 1912 to 1970. The B.C. Forest Branch was created in February 1912, but research activities didn't begin until 1921 when James (Alex) Alexander studied timber utilization, logging slash disposal, natural regeneration, tree growth and yield, and fire protection. In 1923 Assistant Chief Forester Robert St. Clair recommended the establishment of forest experimental stations in the major forest types of the province, resulting in the Aleza Lake Experiment Station near Prince George (in 1924) and the Cowichan Lake Research Station on Vancouver Island (in 1929). When the first European explorers reached the southern shores of North America in the early seventeenth century, they faced a solid forest that stretched all the way from the Atlantic coast to eastern Texas and Oklahoma. In chapters on the explorers, pioneers, lumbermen, boatbuilders, and foresters, Laurence Walker chronicles the constant demands that people have made on forest resources in the South. He shows how the land's very abundance became its greatest liability, as people overhunted the animals, clearcut the forests, and wore out the soil with unwise farming practices—all in a mistaken belief that the forest's bounty (including new ground to be broken) was inexhaustible. With the advent of professional forestry in the twentieth century, however, the southern forest has made a comeback. A professional forester himself, Walker speaks from experience of the difficulties that foresters face in balancing competing interests in the forest. How, for example, does one reconcile the country's growing demand for paper products with the insistence of environmental groups that no trees be cut? Should national forests be strictly recreational areas, or can they support some industrial logging? How do foresters avoid using chemical pesticides when the public protests such natural management practices as prescribed burning and tree cutting? This personal view of the southern forest adds a new dimension to the study of southern history and culture. The primeval southern forest is gone, but, with careful husbandry on the part of all users, the regenerated southern forest may indeed prove to be the inexhaustible resource of which our ancestors dreamed.
