National Capacity in Forestry Research by National Research Council,Division on Earth and Life Studies,Board on Agriculture and Natural Resources,Committee on National Capacity in Forestry Research Pdf

Forests are major components of the earth's natural resources and they are increasingly critical to the welfare of the U.S. economy, environment, and population. Desires to improve forest management and productivity, preserve biodiversity, maintain ecologic integrity, and provide societal services, such as recreation and tourism, necessitate a strong forestry-research base. Given the clear importance of forestry research in sustaining forests for the future, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service asked the Board on Agriculture and Natural Resources of the National Academies to undertake a study of the nation's capacity in forestry research. The Committee on National Capacity in Forestry Research was appointed to carry out the study, which was conducted to review the current expertise and status of forestry research and to examine the approaches of natural resources education and forestry-research organizations to meet future needs.

Quantitative Techniques in Participatory Forest Management by Eugenio Martinez-Falero,Susana Martin-Fernandez,Antonio D. Garcia-Abril Pdf

Forest management has evolved from a mercantilist view to a multi-functional one that integrates economic, social, and ecological aspects. However, the issue of sustainability is not yet resolved. Quantitative Techniques in Participatory Forest Management brings together global research in three areas of application: inventory of the forest variables that determine the main environmental indices, description and design of new environmental indices, and the application of sustainability indices for regional implementations. All these quantitative techniques create the basis for the development of scientific methodologies of participatory sustainable forest management.

Adaptive Forest Management in Ontario by G. Blake MacDonald,R. W. Arnup,R. Keith Jones,Ontario Forest Research Institute Pdf

Adaptive management is a formal process for continually improving management policies and practices by learning from their outcomes. The objective of this paper is to outline the basic concepts of adaptive management, provide examples of successful adaptive management initiatives, and evaluate the potential of adaptive management for improving forest policies and practices in Ontario. Information for the paper was collected from on-line literature searches, literature reviews, and interviews with experts. Case studies from the literature are presented from the perspective of broad program issues and address common North American forest sector issues. They illustrate public, industrial, and hybrid approaches to adaptive management that provide relevant experience and success factors that will be instructive for implementing similar programs in Ontario.

Decision-making in Forest Management by Michael Robert Wale Williams Pdf

Making decisions is a risky business at any time, but in forestry the length of time between planting and harvesting makes it that much more perilous. In fact, forest managers may never see the final results of their actions. Some sort of 'back-up' is needed to help them make the right decisions. This book shows how certain financial 'tools' may be used to give this support, while stressing that the decision is still the responsibility of the manager.

Forestry Research by National Research Council,Division on Earth and Life Studies,Commission on Life Sciences,Committee on Forestry Research Pdf

Forests are valuable in our daily lives, crucial to our nation's ecomony, and integral to the long-term health of the environment. Yet, forestry research has been critically underfunded, and the data generated under current research programs is not enough to meet the diverse needs of our society. Forestry Research provides a research agenda that should yield the information we need to develop responsible policies for forest use and management. In this consensus of forestry experts, the volume explores: The diverse and competing concerns of the timber industry, recreational interests, and wildlife and environmental organizations. The gap between our need for information and the current output of the forestry research program. Areas of research requiring attention: biology of forest organisms, ecosystem function and management, human-forest interactions, wood as raw material, and international trade and competition. Forestry Research is an important book of special interest to federal and state policymakers involved in forestry issues, research managers, researchers, faculty, and students in the field.
