Decolonising Gender in South Asia is the first full-length compilation of cutting-edge research on the challenging debates around decolonial thought and gender studies in South Asia. The book elaborates on various ways of thinking about gender outside the epistemic frame of coloniality/modernity that is bound to the European colonial project. Following Walter Mignolo, the book calls for epistemic disobedience using border thinking as the necessary condition for thinking decolonially. Borders in this case are conceptualised not just as geographical borders of nation states, they also signify the borders of modern/colonial world, epistemic and ontological orders that the gendered and racialised populations of ex-colonies inhabit. Dwelling, thinking and writing from these borders create conditions of epistemic disobedience to coloniality/modernity discourses of the West. The contributors to this collection, all ethnic minority women from South Asia and the South Asian diaspora, write from and about these borders that challenge the colonial universality of thinking about gender. They are writing from, and with, subalternised racial/ethnic/sexual spaces and bodies located geographically in South Asia and South Asian diasporic contexts. In this way, when coloniality/modernity is shaping universalist understandings of gender, we are able to use a broader canon of thought to produce a more pluriversal understanding of the world. Every person has a tale to tell, a short story in them, a glimpse into someone else’s life and the things that have happened to them. Everyone has a voice, but not everyone has the courage to use it, to tell their tales with honesty and conviction. We found our voices over coffee and treats at Libby’s in Marple Bridge one dismal Wednesday morning in January. An idea was formed when a group of like-minded women friends decided to try to write some of these stories down to raise money for The Christie Hospital in Manchester. None of us has made any money from the writing of these stories. Sounds easy, doesn’t it? How is rage related to hunger? Hunger is a liminal experience, connected to powerlessness, shame, and violence. Hunger does not issue into speech. It cannot therefore be easily found in the biblical texts, written by (and about) people who knew hunger. It hides behind the words in these texts. Rage, conversely, finds expression; and in the texts, it can alert readers to hidden experiences of hunger. But rage is not just a response to the lack of food. It is also a transformative force, reaching towards a justice that is not yet real. The experience of hunger and the fear of famine often go hand in hand with anger—a rage that can bring whole populations to their feet. Luzia Sutter Rehmann develops a biblical hermeneutic that centers on the “fire” in the belly of the hungry, their rage that leads to protests and uprisings. Her reading shows “the poor” or “the many” as those with whom Jesus cooperates and as subjects acting on their own initiative.
