Ecclesial Movements and Communities by Brendan Leahy,Breandán Leahy Pdf

Leahy presents the movements as examples of the Church's charismatic dimension, a principle which Pope John Paul II described as 'co-essential' with the hierarchical-institutional dimension. Rev. Brendan Leahy is Professor of Systematic Theology at the Pontifical University of St Patrick's College, Maynooth, in Ireland. He is a von Balthasar scholar and an ecumenist and has also written articles and books on interreligious dialogue, issues facing the Church in the 21st century, renewal in the Church, and the priesthood.

New Outpourings of the Spirit by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger,Pope Benedict XVI Pdf

The volume consists of two fundamental texts by Cardinal Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI, on the ecclesial movements and new communities within the Church since the Second Vatican Council. These writings are particularly meaningful with regard to the intense spiritual journey which the ecclesial movements and the new communities are experiencing in view of their meeting with Pope Benedict XVI on Pentecost 2006. These writings are a precious guide for the entire Church, leaders and laity alike, who are invited to welcome the new "outpourings of the Spirit." The first part of the book presents in an articulate and exhaustive way the theological vision of the Pope on these ecclesial movements and the new communities. It is his talk titled Church Movements and their Place in Theology which he gave at the beginning of the World Congress of the Ecclesial Movements in Rome in 1998. It combines extraordinary theological depth with a warm pastoral tone. The second part of the book is very different from the first, but complements the first part. It contains the dialogue of Cardinal Ratzinger with a large group of Bishops from all continents, convened together for a seminar on the topic, The Ecclesial Movements in the Pastoral Concern of the Bishops held in Rome in 1999. This dialogue format was very favorably received by the Bishops, and it is quite wide-ranging, touching on topics such as the relation between the old and the new charisms, the institutional dimension and the charismatic dimension of the Church, and the Church's mission in a non-Christian society and more.

Sorting Out Catholicism by Massimo Faggioli Pdf

In this expanded and thoroughly updated English edition of the Italian edition (2008), Massimo Faggioli offers us a history and broader context of the so-called ecclesial movements of which Focolare, Community of Sant'Egidio, Neocatechumenal Way, Legionaries of Christ, Communion and Liberation, and Opus Dei are only some of the most recognizable names. Their history goes back to the period following the First Vatican Council, crosses Vatican II, and develops throughout the twentieth century. It is a history that prepares the movements' rise in the last three decades, from John Paul II to Francis. These movements are a complex phenomenon that shapes the Church now more than before, and they play a key role for the future of Catholicism as a global community, in transition from a Eurocentric tradition to a world Church.

God's Ongoing Gifts to the Church by Father Nilson Leal de Sa C B Pdf

All of the baptized, equal in dignity, are called to participate in the mission of the Church and answer the universal call to holiness. The ecclesial movements and new communities that emerge are providential gifts of the Spirit of God and signs of His fruitfulness, affirmed by the recent documents of the popes. In these encouraging pages, you will see the harmony between vocations and the numerous blessings that flow from these movements in the Church, including the strengthening of marriages and the faith formation of young people. You will also discover how to discern and navigate the challenges that sometimes arise in living out the charisms of these communities in union with the local and universal Church. Drawing from his extensive experience with ecclesial communities in Africa, the Americas, Asia and Europe, Fr. Nilson Leal de Sá reveals: The true meaning of charism Four aspects of every believer's common mission Eight ways to discern the authenticity of a charism Ten pitfalls (or "diseases") to be avoided in fostering a healthy charism Seven criteria for a mature community The four pillars of formation in ecclesial communities You will also learn how to avoid "forgetting your first love" in living out your charism. Most significantly, you will (re)discover the authentic message of the Second Vatican Council regarding reverent worship and liturgical prayer, from music at Mass to the recitation of the Liturgy of the Hours. Regardless of your state in life, this book will benefit and assist you in fostering charisms and communion in the Church. It will unpack for you what the Church teaches in canon law regarding clerical, consecrated, and lay vocations and new ecclesial movements and their modes of operation. And it will inspire you to share the gifts of the Holy Spirit with renewed enthusiasm.

Newman on Vatican II by Ian Ker Pdf

John Henry Newman is often described as 'the Father of the Second Vatican Council'. He anticipated most of the Council's major documents, as well as being an inspiration to the theologians who were behind them. His writings offer an illuminating commentary both on the teachings of the Council and the way these have been implemented and interpreted in the post-conciliar period. This book is the first sustained attempt to consider what Newman's reaction to Vatican II would have been. As a theologian who on his own admission fought throughout his life against theological liberalism, yet who pioneered many of the themes of the Council in his own day, Newman is best described as a conservative radical who cannot be classed simply as either a conservative or liberal Catholic. At the time of the First Vatican Council, Newman adumbrated in his private letters a mini-theology of Councils, which casts much light on Vatican II and its aftermath. The leading Newman scholar, Ian Ker, argues that Newman would have greatly welcomed the reforms of the Council, but would have seen them in the light of his theory of doctrinal development, insisting that they must certainly be understood as changes but changes in continuity rather than discontinuity with the Church's tradition and past teachings. He would therefore have endorsed the so-called 'hermeneutic of reform in continuity' in regard to Vatican II, a hermeneutic first formulated by Pope Benedict XVI and subsequently confirmed by his successor, Pope Francis, and rejected both 'progressive' and ultra-conservative interpretations of the Council as a revolutionary event. Newman believed that what Councils fail to speak of is of great importance, and so a final chapter considers the kind of evangelization—a topic notably absent from the documents of Vatican II—Newman thought appropriate in the face of secularization.
